The Patagonia Headway MLC 45L Bag is one part suitcase, one part backpack for all your carry-on travel needs. Yeah, it's that awesome. Soft sides make it lightweight, while 940D Cordura® Ballistic nylon fabric gives it plenty of durability. Coated in a durable water repellent finish, this bag will shed a light rain as you jog to your rental car. The zipper allows the main compartment to open like a book, where you're treated with two separate compartments so you can pack easy and properly organize your socks from your underwear. Whether you use the roll, stuff, or fold method, you should be able to get between 3 and 5 days worth of clothing in there. Or maybe you just want to stick your 17" laptop inside, that's cool too, it's padded. The exterior zip organizes small items such as phone, passport, pens and reading materials. Throw the bag on your back, the strap over your shoulder or grab it like a briefcase and you'll be on or off the plane in no time.

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Bag I've Been Searching For! Bought based on a recommendation from a friend who travels a lot. I've taken on a couple trips so far (car, train, and plane) and couldn't be happier. Over the years I've bought several backpacks in the 45L range to try and get one as close to max airline carryon size (i'm not a fan of rolling luggage when it can be avoided). They all have been great backpacks, but not well suited to airline overhead bins. This one is perfect for flying, comfortable to carry, and the organization is superb. Small pockets for days, the whole thing unzips flat (good for laying out in hotel room or TSA line). Just ordered a Black Hole MLC for the wife (dimensions and layout seem very similar, but different fabric and wife wanted a color available in the Black Hole).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Bag Got this bag as a Christmas Gift for my wife and she absolutely loves it; so do I. We travel a lot and this bag has endless pockets, areas, and compartments to help keep your clothing, toiletries, and personal belongings organized. There are tons of secret areas for laptops, socks, water bottles, and anything you can really think of. Great bag, high quality material. Also, its very versatile and the only bag I've ever seen that can easily be a backpack or shoulder bag. Perfect carry on size too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best bag for short or long trips. Had this bag for awhile, bought another for my lady. Tough, durable, and huge. Love the back pack straps. Perfect carry on luggage, either up top or if you sneak it by your feet. Have a built in luggage tag also. This number has it all. Easily can fit 6/7 days worth of gear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent bag with plenty of storage I took this bag for a week long trip to Greece and it was very impressed with all the storage it has, probably even more than a suitcase. The only thing I had to be aware of when turning or moving around people in general was that I need more personal space with this BIG thing attached to my back. I was able to fit it under the front seat, and stow it neatly in the overhead bin. At no point did any airline employee complain about its size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding travel bag I own several bags from Patagonia and I have always been interested in this bag to replace my sturdy Patagonia messenger bag for trips that required several days. I purchased the MLC bag in black for a three week trip and found that it met nearly all of my expectations. Outstanding size-perfect for carry on and even when stuffed full it fit easily in the overhead compartments. I was able to fit sneakers, flip flops and by utilizing a 20 liter compression sack (also from Moosejaw) I was able to fit socks, underwear, pants, jacket, shirts and cold weather emergency gear into the main compartment. (One week of clothes-rotated). I loved the zippered main compartment for clothes as it kept everything in place. The two side sleeve pockets were nicely padded and held my 15" rugged laptop and smaller tablet. I did not worry about damage or scratches. The interior has another compartment that is large enough to hold another jacket or shoes-I kept this empty and used it to transport souvenirs on my return trip. It was large enough to hold a large clay serving platter and because the bag is padded well it returned without damage. Two more interior pockets are smaller and one is mesh-used for toiletries and the other for emergeny food. The main compartment for organization of phone-cables and ect was put to good use by holding my camera, passport, smaller cables, first aid kit and 32 oz Nalgene bottle, pens and two moleskin books. Plenty of space-my only complaint is that the velcro fasteners to keep the smaller compartments closed were far too small. This caused items to move about when shifting from backpack to OTS. I would recommend making the velcro wider or inserting snaps. The bag can easily be switched from OTS to backpack and either carries well and the weight distribution is good so you can carry for long distances. I appreciated the quality shoulder straps with good padding and chest strap/buckle. Very well done. I felt the shoulder strap could have used a thicker and larger pad-but still a very good and strong strap that can be stored in the rear backpack/strap compartment that can quickly be zipped shut to hide all straps. The rear also has a pocket/zip sleeve that can open to place this onto rolling luggage. I just used this on another trip and it worked well. I actually preferred to use it as a sleeve to hold my jacket as I carried the bag OTS for easy access. The fabric is great-I put it through the wringer in the field and no rips or tears even after dragging it across rough terrain. It reminded me of my military ruck in it's durability. The buckles are hard plastic, but all of the bag stitching ensures that everything is secure. The zippers worked flawlessly and there were no snags. The grip handles are perfect and made carrying this as a suitcase very easy. My wish list for the bag: More secure fasters/velcro for interior compartment. Cinch straps would be a nice addition to keep the bag tight during travel. Also-an exterior mesh side pocket for water bottle when OTS carried. An opening for a hydration bladder and tube would be nice but is not necessary for what this bag is intended. I highly recommend this bag for day trippers and travelers who like to travel light.

What are the differences between the Transport MLC and the Headway MLC?

Asked by: Kari
The only difference I can see between these two packs is the material used. The Headway MLC uses a super durable Cordura nylon for puncture- and abrasion-resistance, whereas the Transport MLC uses 100% recycled polyester. Other than that, these two are very similar in size, weight, and structure.
