The Outdoor Research Men's Helium II Jacket is an ultralight waterproof jacket for emergencies on the trail and rock. The Helium II is made with Pertex Shield+ DS 2.5L, a nylon 30D ripstop with a clear laminate. This fabric allows the jacket to pack down super small, into its own chest pocket. Weighing in at an average of 6.4oz (size large), you’ll hardly notice it stowed away in your pack or clipped to your harness. The waterproof jacket protects you from unexpected rain and harsh winds so you won’t have to cut your trip short. The elastic cuffs, adjustable hood, and drawcord hem keep the fabric close to your body to prevent drafts and leakage. Outdoor adventures are much more enjoyable when you’re able to stay dry during unfortunate weather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lightweight rain shell This is an ultra-lightweight shell that will keep you dry when it's raining and pack down small when it's not. It is fully waterproofed and surprisingly breathable and features a well-fitted hood. ,,,,This isn't a bomber shell. I don't take it if I'm going to be alpine climbing or winter backpacking (for that, I opt for the OR Mentor). That being said, the Helium II is the best shell on the market for ultralight and lightweight backpackers. It seems like it would also be a good one for sport climbers to throw in their pack in case rain hits. ,,,,I haven't had it long enough to vouch for its durability (it feels tough), but it's an OR product so they will take it back if there are any problems.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lightweight Letdown I took this jacket hiking with me a few times, I'm glad it never rained on me or I would have been in trouble. I took this on a short hike while in Norway. It began to rain so I put it in. I felt that for about 15 minutes in a LIGHT rain, it did decent. After about 30 minutes and a medium rain, the jacket had become fully saturated and after about 45 minutes, soaked me through to my base-layer. Cold temps rolled in and, while disappointed, I became concerned for my safety. ,,,,I sprinted to the bottom of the mountain with arms numb, and a completely soaked torso. I had my hood up, and fully zipped the whole whole time. There was also a soapy film that was produced on the jacket after a while, is it actually waterproof or is there just a waterproof spray on the jacket? I have never washed it, and has only seen a few rains. ,,,,Let down by Outdoor Research who usually makes good gear. ,,,,Two stars since it dried quite fast once it was off. In the photo below I unzipped the jacket to show how

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight magic This shell is the ideal climbing windshirt! It's light, waterproof (impressively so for its lightweight-ness) and it packs up quickly into a pocket. A clip makes it easy to clip to your harness, pack or whatever. ,,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ultralight backpackers dream If you are like me, you don't go hiking when the weather forecast calls for three to four days of solid rain. Most the time you never take your rain gear out of your pack, so why lug around a 14 to 18 oz. jacket that's just dead weight. This jacket will keep you dry no matter the conditions. It may not have all the bells and whistles, but it only weighs 6.5 oz. It also doubles as a great wind breaker or for a little extra warmth. You just can't beat the light weight and the quality. Big ups!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You'll forget you packed it. This thing is light. It rocks when you're on the rocks and it comes with me anytime I think it might rain. I love the no frills design and helmet compatible hood. If you're looking for an "around town" shell look elsewhere. This thing belongs in the mountains where you have no real need for hand pockets. It packs to the size of a large orange and weights less than an anorexic chipmunk. Buy one. you won't be disappointed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome Niche Rain Jacket I love this jacket. It's small, lightweight, and true to size. Love the color (I got the lemongrass/lime green one). A few gripes: I'm used to the Marmot Oracle, and their expandable shoulders. I have trouble putting this on on occasion, because the shoulders feel a little narrow (I do tend to wear my clothes very slim though). I often layer this over a Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece and it fits fine, but looks goofy (any jacket would). If you store it compressed, the brim of the hood tends to have a funky wave in it, but it disappears after a few days of hanging on a hook. Lastly, it doesn't have pockets, but that's to save on weight. I definitely recommend this for fast and light climbing/hiking etc, but it is a little too slimmed down to be super practical for "urban use." I haven't noticed any seam damage/lining wear yet, after 7 months. Waterproofing is excellent so far.
