The Outdoor Research Men's Helium HD Jacket is a lightweight rain shell for backpackers and climbers that require more features in wet weather. The Helium HD uses Pertex Shield+, a 2.5 layer, 100% nylon, 30D ripstop fabric that cuts down the weight while remaining 100% waterproof. Whether you’re blocking a hard rain or whipping wind, the jacket stands up to it with water-resistant zippers and a fully adjustable Halo Hood. The Helium II is stripped down, where the Helium HD adds pit zips, zippered hand pockets, and Velcro cuffs. The large still only weighs in at just slightly over nine ounces and still packs down super small, saving weight and space in your pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love the jacket! This jacket was a great purchase! At an amazing price, this jacket is useful in almost any condition. Being an avid skier, this jacket fits perfictly over my down jacket to provide extra water and wind resistance. This jacket is also quite stylish and fits great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great ultra lightweight rainproof jacket This is a great ultra lightweight and packable jacket for outdoor adventures. Packs down to almost nothing. Fabulous for taking it along on adventures when you may need rain or wind protection. Stylish enough to wear out on the town. Great Looks!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Did the job in a Texas downpour I wore this rain jacket in a 1 hour walk in a Texas storm. First, the rain was steady, then a downpour the last 40 minutes with flash flood warnings. Temps were 63 degrees. My forearms were wet, my shirt was only slightly damp. I feel this was due to my own perspiration. I got hot 20 minutes into the walk and had to open the pit zips. Also, my glasses steamed up at times. So, I was cranking some heat. Thus, I think this jacket did the job. I was not soaked, nor was I cold. Another really good feature is the hood. It has a bill and it kept the rain off of my glasses. I would give this jacket a 5 star rating only if it had some magic formula for wicking off the sweat. I don't know a production that gives 100% rain coverage and 100% wicking. Let me know if one exists! But, in all fairness, I sweat easily and a lot when I exert energy. I think this is a great purchase. Going on my backpack trips. I have included a video of the rain just to give a feel for the amount coming down in my test.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Recommended I generally like OR stuff, which is why I hate having to write this review. I live at a mountain pass in the northwest at about 3000 ft. I ski in and out of bounds most days. I ski in the rain as long as it's not hard. I picked up the shell because it was light and packable. It works fine when it was really cold and snowing. In all other situations it failed badly. It's not water proof, it doesn't breath unless the temperature differential is extreme, and the fit is weird. The torso is athletic (good), the sleeve length is too short, and the under arm is wayyyy too tight; it's a really weird cut. I've used eVent, Gortex, and other Pertex garments and they all worked. Don't know what's up with this one. Sorry OR, but I can't recommend this particular jacket to anyone.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Somewhat dissapoointed I was somewhat disappointed when I pulled this jacket out of the packaging. I'm sure it will do a good job keeping me dry but have only used it once on a rainy day while travelling to Seattle. What I'm skeptical about is the material weight and the lack of glide in the zippers, which both are actually really good things for some people. However, I'm comparing to 2 other jackets I've owned in what I consider the same category: the Patagonia Torrentshell and Sierra Designs Neah Bay jackets. Both of these have a less fragile feel to them. I literally feel like I'm going to tear the jacket simply by zipping up the super sealed zipper because it's so stiff. I'll use this jacket for running in the rain and for packing on trips for an emergency shell, but it's definitely not what I expected for the price. Both jackets I've had previously are around half the price of this one. I gave this item three stars because I'm sure it will do what it's supposed to do (keep the moisture out and pack down to nearly nothing), but if the fabric were just slightly more durable I could give it five stars. Also, the price point is a little steep for what this is. I'd expect it to be priced at no more than $150 compared to other options out there.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Super light but can't cinch neck area to stop rain I've tried a few jackets from OR and they are very well made. However many of their jackets seemed to be designed for alpine climbing. This means the hood is designed with a climbing helmet in mind. I had hoped I could cinch the hood, especially in the neck area to block wind and rain. However, without a helmet on It was impossible. The OR Forray jacket does work well without a helmet if you're looking to hike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rain Rain! G away! I bought three rain jackets for an impending AT Thru hike: (1) Arcteryx Beta SL Hybrid, (2) Patagonia Stretch Rainshadow; and (3) OR Helium HD. While I have yet to try them out in an actual driving rain, I opted for this one for the hike due to its features, weight and price. Simply It pasts muster on all counts....and did the best in my "shower stall" test.

How would you expect this jacket to breathe compared to a Goretex shell?

Asked by: Matchewy
Hey there, This is a very breathable jacket that would work in a variety of conditions and has excellent temperature and moisture managements. Because the breathability of any waterproofing treatment like Gore-Tex is partly dependent on the material the jacket itself is constructed from I can't give a general rating in comparison, but the waterproofing treatment on this jacket works just as well as your standard Gore-Tex shell.
