The Outdoor Research Men's Helium HD Jacket is a lightweight rain shell for backpackers and climbers that require more features in wet weather. The Helium HD uses Pertex Shield+, a 2.5 layer, 100% nylon, 30D ripstop fabric that cuts down the weight while remaining 100% waterproof. Whether you’re blocking a hard rain or whipping wind, the jacket stands up to it with water-resistant zippers and a fully adjustable Halo Hood. The Helium II is stripped down, where the Helium HD adds pit zips, zippered hand pockets, and Velcro cuffs. The large still only weighs in at just slightly over nine ounces and still packs down super small, saving weight and space in your pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lightweight hard shell. This shells performance was exactly what I needed. I had been looking for a lightweight shell with pit zips and this did all I asked of it on June 2018 RMNP trip. Construction: No complaining about something that handles temps from 30-80 degrees and winds of 30mph. Built in design features allowed me to adjust internal temps to environmental conditions. Durability: No problems or complaints so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great feature filled OR jacket This product has all the features one would want for a lightweight rain jacket. Seems durable but like anything only time will tell. I recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why isn't this product offered in a unisex SMALL!! This wonderful jacket this is NOT available for women, thusly i had to order a Mens SMALL in order to get all the features that i need in a rain jacket. It would be great if this jacket was available in a unisex XS or S. Rainjackets do not need to fit perfectly...in fact a little on the big side is a good thing since it usually needs to fit over other layers. I normally wear a women's size 6 or size SMALL...i am sure the jacket fits true to size for men, which means sleeves that are way too long for me! However, the extra length and girth is a bonus for rainwear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Prefect except for strange fit I use this for international travel. I love how light and small it is when packed. Can easily throw this into my day pack and forget it's there. The fit, however, is the only apparent downside. I got both a medium and small to test. I was swimming in the medium and the sleeves we're half a hand length longer than my hands. The small does fit better but still doesn't do SE very well. Otherwise solid rain protection.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I wanted to love it I don't think it's a reflection on the jacket itself, but the sizing was just wrong for me. I had tried on a small in a store, but they didn't have a medium. The small was too small, and I thought the medium would be just right. Unfortunately, it was too big. I think I am just in a Schmedium size with OR products. I am 5'10" 150lbs for reference. The material and craftsmanship is top notch. For a light rain shell, you can't go wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight - Versitle Great all around light waterproof protection. Good for hiking, stuffing in back-pocket for cycling, or just to take chill off on cool camp evening

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this jacket. Would only make some minor tweaks in fit. I really wanted to like the Helium II but it was just too minimalist. I am tall and skinny (6'2" and 165lbs) and the Helium II had an uncharacteristic fit for OR, I assume to cut weight in an extreme fashion. It was way too short. I appreciate the pockets and pit zips on the Helium HD, and like the style and color choice better. as well It is a little longer and easier to layer with (roomier fit), but still shorter than a lot of OR's top layers like the Ascendant, which seems a little weird because a rain shell is always the outermost layer. The arms could be a tad longer as well, and the velcro wrist cuffs could be improved. The hood is a tad big even for a helmet compatible hood, and the zippers are a little stiff. but should get better with use All of that being said, this is a great jacket. So light, packs well, waterproofing is solid, breaks wind well, pockets and zips are in all the right places. Living in Seattle, I bring a rain shell with me a lot but also don't end up wearing it a lot. The packability and light weight is really appreciated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for hiking the AT I bought this for my husband to take on his AT trek. He is really slim and this coat is more fitted than others he tried so he was really happy about that. It is warm, packs down very small and, most importantly, weighs next to nothing.

How would you expect this jacket to breathe compared to a Goretex shell?

Asked by: Matchewy
Hey there, This is a very breathable jacket that would work in a variety of conditions and has excellent temperature and moisture managements. Because the breathability of any waterproofing treatment like Gore-Tex is partly dependent on the material the jacket itself is constructed from I can't give a general rating in comparison, but the waterproofing treatment on this jacket works just as well as your standard Gore-Tex shell.
