DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No I want to lay out a quick user guide to the Ferrosi line from OR. It's a bit confusing to pick a product because there are so many Ferrosi jackets. Basically, from lightest (and most useless technically) you go Ferrosi Metro, Ferrosi hoody (or hoodless jacket), Ferrosi summit, and Ferrosi winter hoody. The first three are more appropriate to three season use while the last one seemed to me like a winter ski jacket almost. I own the Ferrosi hoody and the summit hoody. The summit hoody is by far the more serious one. I can't figure out what the niche for the regular Ferrosi is as I've tried it running, biking, and climbing. For running and biking, the hood is annoying and there is no way to strap it down (attention OR - that's an easy fix). While it fits well, it doesn't repel rain and doesn't block wind. So it seems kind of useless unless you're doing high output exercise in ideal climates (maybe 45 or 50 degrees with a light wind?). The summit hoody, on the other hand, seems like an actual piece of alpine gear. It blocks more wind and the waterproof coating actually repels water. It's also a thicker material. I would trust the alpine hoody for more serious alpine and subalpine rock climbing. Sizing. Generally speaking, OR sizing is a bit long. That is, it fits nicely on the torso width wise (albeit, an athletic fit) but sits a bit long everywhere else. The arms are long and so is the entire length of the jacket. This is good news for lanky people but not so great for people like me, who are shorter and stockier. The cut for the regular Ferrosi hoody and the summit hoody are awesome for climbing. They allow a lot of movement in the shoulder without any material really sagging. So OR got that right. Final word. I can't find a good, ample niche for the regular Ferrosi. It doesn't do anything quite right except breath really well. So, my guess, is that it's designed for fair weather, light breeze, and high output exercise. If the weather turns, don't forget a shell.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Layer Bought this as an integral layering piece to throw on over base layer on approaches and to cover thin insulation layers while ice climbing. Worked perfect on first outing. Dried quickly after sweating on approach. Great while climbing -- total freedom of movement, long enough to fit under harness, hood fits well over helmet. It wasn't windy or wet, but feel it would work well in these conditions as well. Thin, light, stuffs into pocket. Other similar pieces add too much warmth. Threw puffy on over it at belays. Didn't use the thumb holes as the cuffs were fine with the elastic.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor sizing I purchased the Ferrosi jacket for running in cold mountain weather. I was trying to decide between two sizes. I am big guy and usually wear an XL. I tried on both an XXL and an XL. The size jump between the two is more like two or three. The XXL was huge with long sleeves and a long torso. The XL was skin tight and highly restrictive. I will have to move away from this brand to find something more consistent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just snagged numbers 3 and 4 of these hoody gems Have one in blue, green, shade, and pewter now. Its great for workouts or casual wear. Its also a great layer over a tee shirt and under some kind of insulated jacket. Its not insulated on its own so great for warm-cool temps but not for cold temps on its own. Its very stretchy, comfy, stylish and fits like it should. I'm 6' and 195 lbs and find the large fits perfect. Newer ones have thumb holes now and I love that little touch. Throw a hood adjustment on the next model please!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the right layer I was looking for I use this jacket as a light layer around town and an essential part of the kit for backcountry adventures. I get warm easily on hikes and skinning up to a ski, and the Ferosi jacket over a baselayer is usually all I need, at least in the Cascades. Then I can just throw another layer over it, either a puffy for standing around or a shell for dropping in, and it works as an insulating layer. The hood is generous but functional. Thumb slots in the sleeve look handy but I'm not one to use them so I can't rate that. It seems durable though I have yet to really test it. I bought it a bit big so it would go over some layers but I probably sized up too much. I'm 6'0, 195 lb, and bout an XL but could probably get away with a L. But that doesn't really bother me as it's very functional as is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for skinning Great breathable layer for skinning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The BEST self powered winter ascent piece This is the quintessential breathable outer layer on the up in the backcountry. At the transition or when extreme conditions demand adding a vest, then a puffy and possibly a shell (in the way below zeros) the Ferossi is the standard in the Northern Rocky's layering kit! No matter the conditions, any time I try going with something else designed for this purpose the missing Ferossi (usually wet because I forgot to unpack the day before) proves there is nothing that functions as well.
