The Osprey Porter 46 Pack is a carry-on backpack for airplane travel. The Porter 46 blends backpack with luggage, providing the padding and support you need to carry your gear while compressing down just like a regular suitcase. The StraightJacket™ wings are padded to protect your stuff and cinch it down for stabilizing the load. When you get to the plane, the harness and hipbelt stow away, for simple storage in the overhead bin. The main section is panel load, opening wide for dumping in all your clothing, while the front zippered section secures tablet, pens, pencils, and even your phone. The Porter is so much more than a backpack.

Products on Sale are Discontinued Styles or Colors.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great pack - for domestic & international travel great pack. used it for trips from iad to mnl via Tokyo and Seoul. had to weigh it but no questions when carrying it as a hand carry pack on the flight. also used the same pack for travel jfk-gva-bcn-gva-ewr. looks low key (imo) and is quite durable!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The hype is earned My wife and I both have this bag and absolutely love it. We bought them for a two week trip across Europe. They worked out so well that they have just about supplanted our regular luggage. The bag is not great if you have to travel with suit jackets, etc. It really is not for that kind of travel so I would not hold that against it. On our trip we would stay in one place for 2-3 days then move with trains, buses, boats, you name it. Once we go where we were going, I switched over to a 15L packable daypack. On our "moving days" I might be wearing the pack for 6-8 hours. The pack is perfectly comfortable for that kind of duration. I am not a "backpacker" in the sense that I am walking everywhere and this bag is on me at all times. If that were the case, it might get a little uncomfortable. I don't think you would want to hike the AT with the bag. However, more experienced souls than I may disagree. Again, I think that is the point of the design. The straps and suspension are great for getting from point A to point B and get out of the way when they need to. I LOVE this bag. The quality is fantastic. The functionality is extremely well thought out. And, of course, it's an Osprey. Anyone that has had to evoke the Almighty Guarantee in the past knows that Osprey stands behind their products and is dedicated to a happy customer. That is why they are always my first choice. Great products + Great service = Loyal customer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best backpack I've owned. I use this backpack for school and small trips. Let me tell you, it fits EVERYTHING. I have fit my laptop, iPad, chargers, calculator, pens, 4 days worth of clothes, and a few other odds and ends in that thing at once. For school, it is a little big, but honestly that comes in handy when you want to fit your binders, books, lunch, and laptop (which yes, all fit). It is very durable, sits on my hips well (my waist is 28", so that's pretty impressive it's inches down that much), and has big carry handles that make it easy to carry by hand if I'm feeling like I want to do farmer carries (the handles also make it really easy to slide off when the pack is being worn as a backpack). The only downsides are the lack of a water bottle holder and it can be a little bulky in university seating. Otherwise, I couldn't have found a better pack, or a better brand. Can't wait to use this pack's carry-on capabilities!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It is my only suitcase This backpack has been through a lot with me. I bought it for my 3 month trip to New Zealand, Thailand, and Indonesia 2 years ago, and it was the perfect piece of luggage: perfect size, worn as a backpack but opens like a suitcase. Since that trip, I've taken it everywhere, for short weekend trips or longer week-long ones to wherever. It's always been what I need. The one issue I've had is that, by the end of that first 3 month trip, the barrier between the main compartment and the middle compartment started to rip. It hasn't gotten any worse since, but it's not ideal. The zippers are also starting to get more difficult to pull, but that may be because cactus liquor got spilled all over it in cargo recently.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great carry-on size! Used this pack for a two week trip to Europe and it was great. On and off planes, trains, and busses with no problems, including Ryanair. Very sturdy and easy to pack. Compression straps allow you to gain the extra inch needed to allow the bag to fit anywhere.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This needs a front-hanging daypack This bag is nearly perfect but has one serious drawback... there is no option to have a front-haning daypack like the Farpoint 55. The Farpoint 55 is too big to cary on with most airlines so I usually take the Porter 46... but the lack of a front hanging daypack is a real problem. Most of my trips are a month or more and it would be really nice to have a daypack on the front for access to things while carrying the whole bag and for the added security. Plus when using a bus, I want to be bale to keep the daypack with me and put the main bag on top of the bus (or underneath in more developed countries).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect travel pack. It's amazing how much I can pack into this bag and how comfortable it makes transporting a heavy load. I want to buy one for all my loved ones. Perfect for navigating airport travel, transporting groceries, camping, and for student needs.

Is this the 2017 version? That is the one with the laptop sleve ....to the rear of the pack ......not the front.

Asked by: rondo
Hiya rondo, thanks for your question! We have the current version with the padded laptop sleeve at the back from the front pocket. The version you are referring to hasn't been released yet. It won't be available until August or September of 2017. Hope this helps!

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size each pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should probably have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate. And they might accidentally touch your butt.

• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size charts above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelts size chart above to help determine your ideal Osprey pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

ALL MIGHTY GUARANTEE - Osprey's Lifetime Warranty

When Osprey celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2009 they launched The Osprey All Mighty Guarantee. What that means to you is ANY Osprey product purchased at ANY time is covered. Any product, any reason, any era - the all encompassing Osprey lifetime warranty ensures their dedication to superior design, craftsmanship and quality of their products is backed up by their actions to replace or repair a pack so it lasts a lifetime. Or two.

Here are some details.... Osprey will repair for any reason, free of charge, any damage or defect in their products, whether it was purchased back in 1974, or ordered right now from this site. If they are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, they will happily replace it. Osprey proudly stands behind the All Mighty Guarantee, so much so that it bears the signature of company founder and head designer, Mike Pfotenhauer.

Some Osprey All Mighty Guarantee FAQs:

What do I do if my Osprey pack needs to be repaired?
If you live in the United States and need a repair done on your Osprey pack, you will first need to obtain a Return Authorization number. You can do this by reaching their Returns Department at 866-314-3130, or using the information that is provided with a new Osprey pack.

What do I do if I just need a replacement pack part like a buckle?
Give Osprey a call at 866-314-3130 and they will take care of you.

How long will it take?
You can tell Osprey you need the pack returned by a certain date when you request a Return Authorization number, and they will do their absolute best to meet that deadline.

What if my pack is super dirty and stinks?
Clean it before you send it to Osprey to get repaired. The real reason is that there is a law that says if your gear is too dirty or odiferous (smelly), Osprey is not allowed to repair it and will just return it to you.

Do I have to pay for shipping?
A little bit. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the pack to Osprey, and they will pay shipping to return the pack via UPS or FedEx. Osprey cannot be held responsible if packages get lost in transit, so make sure you get a tracking number when you ship your pack out. Also, if you use expedited shipping be sure to let Osprey know (866-314-3130). They, in turn, will give your pack priority processing and return it using a similar expedited shipping method.

Do I have to register my pack to take advantage of this incredible guarantee, and/or need to be the original owner of my Osprey pack?
No! Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee is truly ALL MIGHTY. If you own an Osprey pack that needs to be repaired they will repair or replace it.

JUST A HEADS UP: If your Osprey product is not repairable and is replaced, the original product will not be returned to you. They will try really really hard to repair your pack, but if they are unable to make a functional repair, they will replace it. For products that are no longer in production you will be contacted by Osprey to discuss replacement options.

All good answers. So what is NOT covered?
• Osprey program packs or any Osprey pack used by outdoor programs are ONLY covered under Osprey's Program Pack Warranty, NOT AMG.
• Size and/or fit issues. Make sure you buy a pack that fits. Check out the size guide on Osprey product pages for more info.
• Personal preferences like colors you don't like, style of the pack, or not enough/too much room in your pack. Check the product description, features, specifications, and size guide to make sure you are ordering the right pack for you.
• Third party Repairs or replacements. Send your Osprey pack to Osprey and Osprey only to get fixed. Easy as that. And don't try fixing things yourself.
• Cosmetic wear and tear including any reasonable aging of your pack that affects only the appearance and not the function of your pack. Be proud of those scars!
• B.A.M.G. (Before All Mighty Guarantee) Repair Work. The All Mighty Guarantee applies only to repairs requested on or after January 1, 2009.
• A Osprey Hydraulics reservoir is covered by a limited 1-year warranty, which is the reasonable lifespan of a reservoir. Pouring and storing of warm/hot or boiling water in your reservoir WILL VOID your warranty, so don't do that. Reservoirs are NOT designed to contain or handle liquids at temperature.
