The Osprey Manta AG 36 Pack is a hiking pack for long trips during the day and short overnights. Osprey Anti-Gravity

Osprey Anti-Gravity
Using Osprey's peripheral suspension design this lightweight, body contouring, three dimensional suspension literally allows the wearer to move as if they don’t have a pack on. Seamless suspended mesh from the shoulder blades to the lumbar and even into the hipbelt region disperses and balances the load like nothing ever has before.

Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect multi-use bag ever I recently purchased The Manta AG 36 and carried it on an overnight trip ( 10 mi ) . This is the pack I have been waiting for . It has lots of storage and was very comfortable to carry . I got of likes on the trail from other packers . After I got back from my overnighter I put it on and tested it out on my mnt bike for 10 miles and it work very well . P.S. a previous review stated that there wasn't a dedicated opening for the hydration hose except through the zipper . I'm not sure what that's about but there is a dedicated opening for the hose from the hydration bag . That comment almost deterred me from a great purchase . Great bag Osprey.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My go to and daily office pack Being a minimalist, I don't like to fill my closets with too many backpacks. That said, it's difficult to not have at least 3 or 4. With this in mind, I bought the Manta 36 to perform daily duty as my office backpack to carry notebook, a heavy dell laptop and organize pens, etc as well as using it for day hikes with camera and tripod. Despite it's lightweight construction, it's held up well after 3 years with nary any signs of wear. The only thing that's broken on it is the magnetic sternum strap buckle and I think it broke because it got caught in the car door. I love all of the pockets, it makes for great organization of my on-the-go office supplies and when I travel. After years of growing accustomed to Osprey's Anti-Gravity suspension, it's hard to go back to a standard pack with it's hot and sweaty backpanel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't Go Wrong The Manta 36 is the best instructor pack that I have purchased as a Wilderness Field Instructor. Working in wilderness therapy and being responsible for the safe keeping of medications and personal information, I am required to have my pack on or near me 24/7. Carrying a pack for days at a time has in the past left me with back pain. However, the suspension system and forming hip built of the Manta helps keep the weight on my hips and makes my job much more enjoyable. The only con of the pack is that it does not have straps on the bottom part of the pack. These straps on other packs I have used to strap on bear ropes or water filters which was really convenient and kept the inside of my pack cleaner. I have used this pack on 56 hikes in the Pisgah National Forest, Smokey Mountains, and in the Maroon Bells Wilderness Area. I strongly recommend it as a wilderness professional and as an avid adventurer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome pack, and, but ... Please do yourself a favor: get the pack! ... but and fix it before you use it. In other words, the left strap where the trekking poles attach is abrasive, specifically, the nylon fabric and stitching is like melted plastic edgy. It's so bad that it tore up $1,000 worth of clothes before we could even figure out why just the left arm pit was getting all torn up in my clothes, The Meridian does the same thing. Rub your finger along this area. If it feels at all edgy abrasive snaggy, take care of it right away by covering it with Tenacious tape. p.s. ... It works best to first cut out entirely the trekking pole attachment strap. The pack will look a bit hacked up, but it's so worth the fix. Hopefully, Osprey will fix this ... ?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I got this pack instead of the Mirra because it just fit me better. I'm a woman and have a little longer torso than an average woman. The pack can compact down a bit for shorter hikes and expands for longer ones. The anti gravity back is amazing. You can hardly tell your carrying anything. The pockets are all easy to access and this pack also comes with a hydration pack of 2.5L You can pull the bladder out easy and the hose disconnects so you don't have to worry about dropping it on the ground. I give this pack 5 out of 5

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Didn't like the waist strap I like the layout of the pack a lot. I also like the way the mesh panel holds the pack off your back. However, the waist strap was too narrow for me and I opted for the Kestrel 32 instead even though I liked the configuration of the Manta better.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Shame that the new version is so much bigger. Until recently I have had the model Manta 36 back and without a doubt is the most versatile backpack I've ever owned. Used for everything from commuting with a laptop, day & overnight hikes and long distance (200km+) bike rides. It has pocket everywhere and almost everything you can think off which makes it easy to keep track of everything you might need for an unsupported long distance ride or an overnight hike. The only real negative was that the seemed to forget that the hose for the hydration bag has to come out somewhere, and the only location was through the zipper. Not a show stopper, but given the money a little annoying. Just recently one of the zipper broke and is hopefully going to be repaired under the Osprey warranty program. I am hoping it will be repaired and not replaced with the latest version simply much bigger. While not noticeably any heavier, the new model is much bigger because of the new AG frame. Too big to be practical as a bag to use on cycling adventures. It looks and feels more like bag that you would use solely for overnight hiking trips and no longer the multi-purpose (1-bag-fits-all) that the old model was. While I am sure that the AG frame is excellent, I don't think you'd be looking at this bag anymore as one that you'd use to take the laptop in to the office unless you wanted people asking you "where's your tent?" Which is real shame because the previous model was as Emmet says "Awesome". The new one... made for one purpose, which unfortunately misses the mark for many users. Would I recommend? Absolutely if you go hiking. Otherwise search high and low to try and find the old model.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mostly what I expected At the recommendation of store salesperson, I purchased this pack for a 3 week excursion where I'd have nightly accommodations. Just needed space to pack essential clothes/toiletries. So far, so good (trip isn't until late July 2016), with a few minor issues preventing a 5-star review: - The hydration bladder has a hook in the middle that loops through a clip in the pack to keep it upright as water is depleted. I discovered this broke and contacted Osprey. Apparently this is a common problem and they're working the fix. They will send me the new part once ready and suggested work around in the meantime. - There's a piece on the outside left strap to hold walking poles (or other things, I suppose). This was rubbing on the inside of my left arm and very uncomfortable. My fix: I wrapped a bandana around the area and now no rubbing/chaffing. - The upper chest strap isn't long enough to be clipped (on me). I leave it hanging with water tube affixed to magnet; easy enough to lift up when I want a drink, just not as convenient is bending my head down. Also, I didn't realize it has a built-in rain cover, and purchased another separately (still need to return that one). Positives: - I love the pockets on the sides (that wrap around the waist), perfect for cell phone while I listen w/ ear buds, keys, cash and ID. - Easy to put on and take off. - I like the hydration system, even with the clip issue mentioned above. I did have to locate and watch a video on how to fill the bladder, as initially, I thought I was destroying it when pulling on the part where water goes in - sealed very tightly from the factory! - Lastly, customer service is outstanding. After receiving the pack in the mail, I went to the store for a fitting. I was told I could take it back with my 'stuff' and they'd show me how to pack for most efficiency and comfort. Looking forward to that! All in all, I believe I made a choice and thank Moosejaw for their help! P.S. A competitor had suggested a different / larger bag and I'm really glad I didn't go for it. As Moosejaw told me - the more space/room I have, the more I'll needlessly pack/carry.

OSPREY MEASUREMENT GUIDE

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size each pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should probably have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate. And they might accidentally touch your butt.

HOW TO MEASURE TORSO LENGTH:
• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size charts above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

HOW TO MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE:
• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelts size chart above to help determine your ideal Osprey pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

ALL MIGHTY GUARANTEE - Osprey's Lifetime Warranty

When Osprey celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2009 they launched The Osprey All Mighty Guarantee. What that means to you is ANY Osprey product purchased at ANY time is covered. Any product, any reason, any era - the all encompassing Osprey lifetime warranty ensures their dedication to superior design, craftsmanship and quality of their products is backed up by their actions to replace or repair a pack so it lasts a lifetime. Or two.

Here are some details.... Osprey will repair for any reason, free of charge, any damage or defect in their products, whether it was purchased back in 1974, or ordered right now from this site. If they are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, they will happily replace it. Osprey proudly stands behind the All Mighty Guarantee, so much so that it bears the signature of company founder and head designer, Mike Pfotenhauer.

Some Osprey All Mighty Guarantee FAQs:

What do I do if my Osprey pack needs to be repaired?
If you live in the United States and need a repair done on your Osprey pack, you will first need to obtain a Return Authorization number. You can do this by reaching their Returns Department at 866-314-3130, or using the information that is provided with a new Osprey pack.

What do I do if I just need a replacement pack part like a buckle?
Give Osprey a call at 866-314-3130 and they will take care of you.

How long will it take?
You can tell Osprey you need the pack returned by a certain date when you request a Return Authorization number, and they will do their absolute best to meet that deadline.

What if my pack is super dirty and stinks?
Clean it before you send it to Osprey to get repaired. The real reason is that there is a law that says if your gear is too dirty or odiferous (smelly), Osprey is not allowed to repair it and will just return it to you.

Do I have to pay for shipping?
A little bit. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the pack to Osprey, and they will pay shipping to return the pack via UPS or FedEx. Osprey cannot be held responsible if packages get lost in transit, so make sure you get a tracking number when you ship your pack out. Also, if you use expedited shipping be sure to let Osprey know (866-314-3130). They, in turn, will give your pack priority processing and return it using a similar expedited shipping method.

Do I have to register my pack to take advantage of this incredible guarantee, and/or need to be the original owner of my Osprey pack?
No! Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee is truly ALL MIGHTY. If you own an Osprey pack that needs to be repaired they will repair or replace it.

JUST A HEADS UP: If your Osprey product is not repairable and is replaced, the original product will not be returned to you. They will try really really hard to repair your pack, but if they are unable to make a functional repair, they will replace it. For products that are no longer in production you will be contacted by Osprey to discuss replacement options.

All good answers. So what is NOT covered?
• Osprey program packs or any Osprey pack used by outdoor programs are ONLY covered under Osprey's Program Pack Warranty, NOT AMG.
• Size and/or fit issues. Make sure you buy a pack that fits. Check out the size guide on Osprey product pages for more info.
• Personal preferences like colors you don't like, style of the pack, or not enough/too much room in your pack. Check the product description, features, specifications, and size guide to make sure you are ordering the right pack for you.
• Third party Repairs or replacements. Send your Osprey pack to Osprey and Osprey only to get fixed. Easy as that. And don't try fixing things yourself.
• Cosmetic wear and tear including any reasonable aging of your pack that affects only the appearance and not the function of your pack. Be proud of those scars!
• B.A.M.G. (Before All Mighty Guarantee) Repair Work. The All Mighty Guarantee applies only to repairs requested on or after January 1, 2009.
• A Osprey Hydraulics reservoir is covered by a limited 1-year warranty, which is the reasonable lifespan of a reservoir. Pouring and storing of warm/hot or boiling water in your reservoir WILL VOID your warranty, so don't do that. Reservoirs are NOT designed to contain or handle liquids at temperature.
