Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Travel Pack I won the Osprey Fairview (female version of this pack) as part of a promotion a few months ago and almost returned it thinking I would never use it. I started using it for travel a few months ago and was bragging about it to my husband who decided he needed to get his own. We absolutely love using these packs for weekend travel and trips where a standard roll-on suitcase is not practical. If you are looking for a travel pack, go ahead and get this one. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the features on this bag I bought four of these backpacks for my family and I (including a tween and a teen) after exhaustive research. We've been trying to pare down our travel kit to be able to move light and fast where ever we were going and this pack fits the bill perfectly. We fit more than enough clothes for a trip to the PNW in December while being able to navigate through airports and train stations easily. I appreciated being able to stow the harness so nothing got caught while going through the airport luggage handling system. Being able to lock the zippers for train and bus travel was a nice perk. The detachable day pack, while quite small, held electronics, a sweater, food and a water bottle for each of us but it was a challenge to attach to the front of the main pack while full. Being able to kangaroo the daypack on the front was a big hit with my kids as they were able to access their things quickly and easily without having to take off the main pack. The main pack was ever so slightly too large for my tween but it wasn't anything he couldn't handle nor was he uncomfortable while carrying it. Their only minor complaint was that there was no zipper access from the outside of the daypack to easily reach the electronics sleeve without having to open the entire daypack. We all used packing cubes (color coded for each of us) to help organize the inside as the large panel opening made it easy to access whichever cube we were seeking, even if it was on the bottom. There is no dry bag compartment so we carried large plastic zipper bags to hold wet bathing suits. All in all, I couldn't be happier with this pack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just as good as expected! Bought this for a Euro-trip I'll be taking. Tested is out on local trails. Good weight distribution between shoulders & hips. Does sit a bit high on the back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well designed and extremely versatile Have only used once and completely overlooked description of detachable front day pack--very useful without having to tote the whole pack around for day hiking/touring. Was impressed with internal capacity and waist belt and straps are very comfortable. Although don't envision ever checking it as baggage, the zipable back panel to conceal/protect the straps and belt are very innovative. A great pack for a short two to three day backpacking outing/trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from From weekenders to 10 day trips- this bag rocks I traveled to 13 countries on trips ranging from 3 to 12 days using this bag and have no complaints. I packed it wayyy too full many times, but the zippers held up and the back support was sufficient for me (130 pound female) to carry it for miles with little discomfort. I was nervous about budget airlines with their strict carry on rules, but was able to carry this pack on (with the day pack zipped off and taken as my second item) on Vueling, RyanAir, EasyJet, and Belgian Air. The zip off daypack (which has a laptop compartment, though unpadded) was a lifesaver. This is the easiest bag to pack and live out of in hostel/hotel situations. Highly recommend for air travel and light to medium hiking days. The only thing I'd change would be to add pockets to the hip belt so you can pull out money/tickets/phone without taking the whole pack off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We read a lot of reviews... This is the bag. My wife and I read hundreds of reviews on many different brands before settling on this pack. After trips to France, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, and even a trip home for thanksgiving, we can't recommend this bag enough. Its perfect. The separable day pack is great for excursions or a plane carry on. The build quality is obvious. One thing that is not noted, is that this pack is easily lockable with 1 single TSA approved lock that can be hidden easily. The only way someone could get into this pack while we are on the train is by slashing it open. We love this pack. it was our first Osprey purchase and we are hooked.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fantastic travel pack Purchased this bag (and 3 other Osprey bags for the rest of the family) for a week+ trip to Ireland. Bag fit airline carryon and packed fantastic. Compression straps (on the bag) and packing cubes did wonders. Fit a weeks worth of clothes (I'm a 6'4" guy so clothes are big). Everything fit great and was easy to access. Bag stood up to banging, dropping, and tossing around with no signs of wear. Love my Osprey bags and will be buying a backpack hiking bag soon.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Comfy bag but need some improvements I bought this pack for a 4 week hiking trip in South America based on positive reviews on the net. During the trip, I discovered so many little things that can be improved to make this bag truly great but in it's current form it just misses the mark: - The bag is just a tad too tall to be carry on compatible. The main compartment is about 5-7cm taller than then general carry on luggage restriction. - Conversely the day pack is a bit too small and flat. It can't even hold a 750ml standard sized drink bottle without it popping out. - There are hardly any exterior carrying pockets for small items. - I was fairly careful with my gear but after the trip I discovered 3 holes on the day pack mesh pockets and some scruff marks on the main compartment. Compared to my partner, who picked a bag from a competing brand, the Farpoint feels really old fashioned. What I do like about the bag: - Very comfortable. The maximum load I carried was 10kg and the terrain was rocky and hilly, the loaded bag didn't bother me at all. - Love the belt stowaway cover. - Inconspicuous in color and look (after belt gets stowed away), useful for crowded and unsafe places. I just wish Osprey can reduce the main compartment size and increase the day pack volume, and add some mod con such as multiple outside carrying pockets (it's not hard to do, the competitor's bag did it). I look forward to any future improvements.

Are all Far-point bags waterproof? I'm looking to use the bag for my trip across Europe in the Spring, but I also want to use it when snowboarding and skiing.

Asked by: Troy
Hiya Troy, thanks for your question! The Farpoint packs are water resistant, but not waterproof. You'll need a rain cover for protection. Here is a link to that item: https://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Osprey-Ultralight-Raincover_10270427_10208_10000001_-1_ Keep in mind that the 55 liter pack is a tad too big to qualify as a carry-on, if you are traveling that route. The 40 liter pack is perfect fit. Here is a link: https://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Osprey-Farpoint-40-Travel-Pack_10303520_10208_10000001_-1_ I hope you have fantastic adventures!

Pack Weight Capacity 20 - 50 lbs

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size the pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate.

• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size chart above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelt size info above to help determine your ideal pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

ALL MIGHTY GUARANTEE - Osprey's Lifetime Warranty

When Osprey celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2009 they launched The Osprey All Mighty Guarantee. What that means to you is ANY Osprey product purchased at ANY time is covered. Any product, any reason, any era - the all encompassing Osprey lifetime warranty ensures their dedication to superior design, craftsmanship and quality of their products is backed up by their actions to replace or repair a pack so it lasts a lifetime. Or two.

Here are some details.... Osprey will repair for any reason, free of charge, any damage or defect in their products, whether it was purchased back in 1974, or ordered right now from this site. If they are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, they will happily replace it. Osprey proudly stands behind the All Mighty Guarantee, so much so that it bears the signature of company founder and head designer, Mike Pfotenhauer.

Some Osprey All Mighty Guarantee FAQs:

What do I do if my Osprey pack needs to be repaired?
If you live in the United States and need a repair done on your Osprey pack, you will first need to obtain a Return Authorization number. You can do this by reaching their Returns Department at 866-314-3130, or using the information that is provided with a new Osprey pack.

What do I do if I just need a replacement pack part like a buckle?
Give Osprey a call at 866-314-3130 and they will take care of you.

How long will it take?
You can tell Osprey you need the pack returned by a certain date when you request a Return Authorization number, and they will do their absolute best to meet that deadline.

What if my pack is super dirty and stinks?
Clean it before you send it to Osprey to get repaired. The real reason is that there is a law that says if your gear is too dirty or odiferous (smelly), Osprey is not allowed to repair it and will just return it to you.

Do I have to pay for shipping?
A little bit. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the pack to Osprey, and they will pay shipping to return the pack via UPS or FedEx. Osprey cannot be held responsible if packages get lost in transit, so make sure you get a tracking number when you ship your pack out. Also, if you use expedited shipping be sure to let Osprey know (866-314-3130). They, in turn, will give your pack priority processing and return it using a similar expedited shipping method.

Do I have to register my pack to take advantage of this incredible guarantee, and/or need to be the original owner of my Osprey pack?
No! Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee is truly ALL MIGHTY. If you own an Osprey pack that needs to be repaired they will repair or replace it.

JUST A HEADS UP: If your Osprey product is not repairable and is replaced, the original product will not be returned to you. They will try really really hard to repair your pack, but if they are unable to make a functional repair, they will replace it. For products that are no longer in production you will be contacted by Osprey to discuss replacement options.

All good answers. So what is NOT covered?
• Osprey program packs or any Osprey pack used by outdoor programs are ONLY covered under Osprey's Program Pack Warranty, NOT AMG.
• Size and/or fit issues. Make sure you buy a pack that fits. Check out the size guide on Osprey product pages for more info.
• Personal preferences like colors you don't like, style of the pack, or not enough/too much room in your pack. Check the product description, features, specifications, and size guide to make sure you are ordering the right pack for you.
• Third party Repairs or replacements. Send your Osprey pack to Osprey and Osprey only to get fixed. Easy as that. And don't try fixing things yourself.
• Cosmetic wear and tear including any reasonable aging of your pack that affects only the appearance and not the function of your pack. Be proud of those scars!
• B.A.M.G. (Before All Mighty Guarantee) Repair Work. The All Mighty Guarantee applies only to repairs requested on or after January 1, 2009.
• A Osprey Hydraulics reservoir is covered by a limited 1-year warranty, which is the reasonable lifespan of a reservoir. Pouring and storing of warm/hot or boiling water in your reservoir WILL VOID your warranty, so don't do that. Reservoirs are NOT designed to contain or handle liquids at temperature.
