Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great main pack, poor day pack I love the bag, but the day pack needs work. When I get to my destination, I rely on the day pack and it is not great. you cannot fit a water bottle or anything in the exterior pockets. Osprey should raise the price a little and include a good day pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pack! A little small fit for Big Guys I love this pack! Great for traveling, I love the stow away straps and remove able second pack for day excursions. But if your a plus sized individual like myself, it's just like everything else. They make gear for people up to 5'10". I'm 6'3" and 280lbs with a 54" chest and the pack sits a little high for my liking and waist belt sits right in the middle of my stomach, so I just don't use it. But the pack fits my needs and works great. Very well made and should last me a long time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from PLEASE, Osprey, make this just a bit shorter I bought this as a travel backpack to use around Europe etc. but I ended up having to return this. It's too tall to be considered a carry on. MAYBE you can get away with the S/M, but tall people travel too! Please, please please Osprey figure out a way to make both the S/M and the M/L size fit carry on guidelines. Have the straps connected closer to the top of the pack or something. This is such a comfortable backpack that's lightweight and lockable and easy to open up and close and organize. I love the detachable daypack and the size is perfect. It just defeats the purpose if I have to pay to check this bag on every flight I take. I would absolutely recommend this pack if the height issue can somehow be resolved.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Pack EVER! Bought two of these 2 years ago for a trip to Ireland. My husband and I carried everything we needed for 10 days with two small children (including diapers!) and still had room to spare! We have since used them for air travel, car camping, and a host of day adventures. Favorite features- detachable daypack, full zipper (so easy to pack!), and the ability to hide the harness for flying. When flying we always carry-on and have never had any issue. The best part is being hands free to handle papers (boarding passes, maps, etc.) and hold our children's hands as we maneuver through airports or traffic. I'm actually eager for our girls to be old enough to have their own. Fantastic bag Osprey!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic travel, hiking & trekking pack I bought this pack for my trip the Kathmandu, Nepal and I was more than satisfied with my purchase. I don't like top loading hiking packs and the Farpoint 55 accommodated that along with providing the ease of a day pack and trek pack in one, but also in two.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome bag this has been my main go to bag for the past 2 years. and it fits all my needs. i've taken it to europe 3 times in the past 2 years for extended time and soon to be a 4th time. you dont have to check this bag on flights. it fits in all over head compartments domestic or international flights.the only planes this bag wont fit on is the little small crop dusters lol. daypack that comes with the bag is deceptively spacious. when walking europe it can store hat, gloves, jacket, camera, water bottle and its still have room. if your a minimalist then this bag is for you. for a 2 week trip to europe i use this bag and the daypack. versatility of changing it from a backpack to a duffle bag is really quick. and you can use the area where straps are located on the bag as additional storage for jacket before boarding the plane. hopes this helps and happy traveling

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Travel Pack My family of three was headed out for a year-long adventure, so I bought one for both my husband and me. Our eight year-old daughter wanted one so badly, but she has to settle for a kids' Osprey pack until she's big enough to carry all her things. Maybe next time! This pack was great because we could each carry our backpack and pull a carry-on sized rolling suitcase. This made going up and down stairs and in and out of subways doable--not easy, but we could manage. Our first stop was a month of traveling in Thailand. We ditched the rolling suitcases and just carried all our stuff in the two far points. The zipper design makes access super easy and the mesh pockets inside help with organization. I also liked the interior compression straps that helped hold our clothing in place. By the end of our time the packs were heavy and I wouldn't do a long backpacking trip carrying this pack. The kangaroo carry option with the two packs is great! We did go trekking in Nepal and our porter claimed she was comfortable carrying the pack (not too heavy) since we all carried 1/2 of our own stuff and brought very little with us. Our porter used the external straps to attach her own personal bag as well. During our time in Kathmandu, my only daypack was the small one that's part of this pack. The mesh on it pilled EVERY piece of clothing it came in contact with. I contacted Osprey and they said they knew about this problem. Because I was in Nepal for the year, I didn't have a way to return it and therefore used the resources of Nepal and had a tailor take the small pack apart and cover the mesh with a different fabric. (I definitely held my breath when I gave him permission to take my backpack apart!) Now it's fine, but I hope Osprey fixes this problem. After Nepal, we traveled in Europe and taking these bags on small airplanes was no problem. We also could carry a lot and navigate our way through cities. I look forward to years of travel with my Farpoint!

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size the pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate.

HOW to MEASURE TORSO LENGTH:
• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size chart above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

HOW to MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE:
• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelt size info above to help determine your ideal pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

ALL MIGHTY GUARANTEE - Osprey's Lifetime Warranty

When Osprey celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2009 they launched The Osprey All Mighty Guarantee. What that means to you is ANY Osprey product purchased at ANY time is covered. Any product, any reason, any era - the all encompassing Osprey lifetime warranty ensures their dedication to superior design, craftsmanship and quality of their products is backed up by their actions to replace or repair a pack so it lasts a lifetime. Or two.

Here are some details.... Osprey will repair for any reason, free of charge, any damage or defect in their products, whether it was purchased back in 1974, or ordered right now from this site. If they are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, they will happily replace it. Osprey proudly stands behind the All Mighty Guarantee, so much so that it bears the signature of company founder and head designer, Mike Pfotenhauer.

Some Osprey All Mighty Guarantee FAQs:

What do I do if my Osprey pack needs to be repaired?
If you live in the United States and need a repair done on your Osprey pack, you will first need to obtain a Return Authorization number. You can do this by reaching their Returns Department at 866-314-3130, or using the information that is provided with a new Osprey pack.

What do I do if I just need a replacement pack part like a buckle?
Give Osprey a call at 866-314-3130 and they will take care of you.

How long will it take?
You can tell Osprey you need the pack returned by a certain date when you request a Return Authorization number, and they will do their absolute best to meet that deadline.

What if my pack is super dirty and stinks?
Clean it before you send it to Osprey to get repaired. The real reason is that there is a law that says if your gear is too dirty or odiferous (smelly), Osprey is not allowed to repair it and will just return it to you.

Do I have to pay for shipping?
A little bit. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the pack to Osprey, and they will pay shipping to return the pack via UPS or FedEx. Osprey cannot be held responsible if packages get lost in transit, so make sure you get a tracking number when you ship your pack out. Also, if you use expedited shipping be sure to let Osprey know (866-314-3130). They, in turn, will give your pack priority processing and return it using a similar expedited shipping method.

Do I have to register my pack to take advantage of this incredible guarantee, and/or need to be the original owner of my Osprey pack?
No! Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee is truly ALL MIGHTY. If you own an Osprey pack that needs to be repaired they will repair or replace it.

JUST A HEADS UP: If your Osprey product is not repairable and is replaced, the original product will not be returned to you. They will try really really hard to repair your pack, but if they are unable to make a functional repair, they will replace it. For products that are no longer in production you will be contacted by Osprey to discuss replacement options.

All good answers. So what is NOT covered?
• Osprey program packs or any Osprey pack used by outdoor programs are ONLY covered under Osprey's Program Pack Warranty, NOT AMG.
• Size and/or fit issues. Make sure you buy a pack that fits. Check out the size guide on Osprey product pages for more info.
• Personal preferences like colors you don't like, style of the pack, or not enough/too much room in your pack. Check the product description, features, specifications, and size guide to make sure you are ordering the right pack for you.
• Third party Repairs or replacements. Send your Osprey pack to Osprey and Osprey only to get fixed. Easy as that. And don't try fixing things yourself.
• Cosmetic wear and tear including any reasonable aging of your pack that affects only the appearance and not the function of your pack. Be proud of those scars!
• B.A.M.G. (Before All Mighty Guarantee) Repair Work. The All Mighty Guarantee applies only to repairs requested on or after January 1, 2009.
• A Osprey Hydraulics reservoir is covered by a limited 1-year warranty, which is the reasonable lifespan of a reservoir. Pouring and storing of warm/hot or boiling water in your reservoir WILL VOID your warranty, so don't do that. Reservoirs are NOT designed to contain or handle liquids at temperature.
