Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Travel/Carry-on Backpack After using the porter 30 for almost a year, I decided to try farpoint 40. It gave me better back and hip support which is a necessity in multi-city trips. It's also very lightweight!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it but... I got this pack to take across Europe on a 6 week backpacking trip. I love the way everything fits into, the fit, and the durability. My only suggestion for the company itself is to mix up the color schemes. I know this is a minut factor, but for me if I'm buying something at this price point that will be on my back daily, style is an added bonus! I think introducing new color schemes would be good for business!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best travel backpack! I will no longer be using my rolly suitcases thanks to this backpack! I used packing cubes and fit enough items for 10 day trip overseas. All the straps, zippers and pockets make this pack convienent for traveling! It also passes as a carry on and can fit under the chair on a plane. I got the black color so I don't attract attention in foreign countries, but I do wish I would have gotten another color. Best travel purchase, nightly recommend it & shipping was fast!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great backpack! I'm currently in the middle of a 5 week backpacking trip in Europe. I packed 10 days worth of clothing (I will be doing laundry throughout the trip) and this backpack is wonderful for holding it all, and even has a little extra space for bringing home souvenirs. Super supportive and well-made bag!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nearly Perfect I really want to love this bag - all positives have basically been said in other reviews so I won't repeat them. The major flaw for me were the mesh pockets; I found that they were very difficult to access while carrying the pack, and being that they were deep meant that smaller items could get lost easily. This was all the more annoying because of the severe lack of other outside pockets that could be accessed while wearing, so access travel documents, maps, passports, compass, snacks etc necessitated either removing the bag entirely or having to carry a second bag. The other issue I have is the size of the carry handles - they're unnecessarily bulky and heavy; it's a 40l pack, no one (unless you're a hopelessly bad packer) is really going to carry that much weight as to need such handles. They also take up room that could otherwise be used for a side or top pocket. If neither of these things are an issue for you then I highly recommend the bag. It's well constructed, relatively lightweight and easy to pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well made and ready for Thailand Trip! I bought this backpack after seeing the great many reviews online. I got it in the small, as I am only 5'1''. The backpack is great quality and is very comfortable on my back with the padding. I can't wait to try it out in Thailand! Lots of compartments for organizing too!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too big This bag is too big for my petite frame, 4"11 105 pds. it overpowered my body. I had to return it for that reason only. The bag has great features and I would have kept it otherwise.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent travel pack This pack was purchased for and will be used for travel only. It is a great carryon with backpack straps, a great combination.

Hi. Do you have the 2017 model? If yes, what is/are the difference/s from the previous model? Thanks.

Asked by: cassidy91
Hiya cassidy91, thanks for your question! We will be getting the 2017 version after the remaining 2016 versions are sold out. The only difference is the logo, which will change to an all grey embroidered Osprey logo, rather than the red, black and grey patch. By the way, there will be a new women's version of this pack coming out next year (named The Fairview) which will have some changes. Hope this helps!

Can I attach this one to the back of the 80L sojourn as if it was a daylite pack ? I'd like to use this one as carry on and the sojourn as checked luggage.

Asked by: JoeV
HIya JoeV, thanks for your question! The short answer is that you *could* attach the Farpoint pack to the Sojourn pack... but you'd have to get creative. There are no attachment points on the Farpoint pack so you would need to use compression scraps, a bungee cord or some other device that will keep them connected. A better option would be either the Daylite Pack, Daylite Plus Pack or Ozone Day Pack. The Daylite (15 liters) and Daylite Plus (20 liters) packs have the coordinating connection points with the Sojourn pack but they are a much smaller capacity than the Farpoint. The Ozone Day Pack is available in larger sizes (24, 35 and 46 liters) but it does not have the connection points. Alternatively, the top handle on the Ozone Day is wide enough to slide through the telescoping expandable handle on the Sojourn. Here are links to the packs I mentioned: Daylite Pack https://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Osprey-Daylite-Backpack_10210087_10208_10000001_-1_ https://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Osprey-Daylite-Pack_10313733_10208_10000001_-1_ Osprey Daylite Plus Pack https://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Osprey-Daylite-Plus-Pack_10313734_10208_10000001_-1_ Ozone Day Pack https://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Osprey-Ozone-Day-Pack-24_10286161_10208_10000001_-1_ https://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Osprey-Ozone-Travel-Pack-35_10286162_10208_10000001_-1_ https://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Osprey-Ozone-Travel-Pack-46_10286163_10208_10000001_-1_ Hope this helps!

Can the Osprey Farpoint 40 in size M/L be brought as a carry-on while traveling by plane or does it need to be checked in? Thank you!

Asked by: Gregory
Hiya Gregory, thanks for your question! This pack measures 21 x 14 x 9 inches and the maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag (most airlines) are 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches including handles, so it just fits! It's always a good idea to check with your airline to confirm this. Hope this helps!

Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Pack, how do I know what size to buy? I am 70, 6' tall and 190 lbs. Any input would be appreciated before I place my order. Thank you, Rev. Thom, Mission Pawsible

Asked by: Sierra Tracker
Thanks for the question! The pack size will actually depend on your torso length. You can find this information by measuring from the C7 vertebrae to iliac crest. The Small/ Medium will fit 15-19 inches, and the Medium/ Large will fit 18-22 inches. I hope this information help!

Pack Weight Capacity 20 - 40 lbs

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size the pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate.

HOW to MEASURE TORSO LENGTH:
• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size chart above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

HOW to MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE:
• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelt size info above to help determine your ideal pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

ALL MIGHTY GUARANTEE - Osprey's Lifetime Warranty

When Osprey celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2009 they launched The Osprey All Mighty Guarantee. What that means to you is ANY Osprey product purchased at ANY time is covered. Any product, any reason, any era - the all encompassing Osprey lifetime warranty ensures their dedication to superior design, craftsmanship and quality of their products is backed up by their actions to replace or repair a pack so it lasts a lifetime. Or two.

Here are some details.... Osprey will repair for any reason, free of charge, any damage or defect in their products, whether it was purchased back in 1974, or ordered right now from this site. If they are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, they will happily replace it. Osprey proudly stands behind the All Mighty Guarantee, so much so that it bears the signature of company founder and head designer, Mike Pfotenhauer.

Some Osprey All Mighty Guarantee FAQs:

What do I do if my Osprey pack needs to be repaired?
If you live in the United States and need a repair done on your Osprey pack, you will first need to obtain a Return Authorization number. You can do this by reaching their Returns Department at 866-314-3130, or using the information that is provided with a new Osprey pack.

What do I do if I just need a replacement pack part like a buckle?
Give Osprey a call at 866-314-3130 and they will take care of you.

How long will it take?
You can tell Osprey you need the pack returned by a certain date when you request a Return Authorization number, and they will do their absolute best to meet that deadline.

What if my pack is super dirty and stinks?
Clean it before you send it to Osprey to get repaired. The real reason is that there is a law that says if your gear is too dirty or odiferous (smelly), Osprey is not allowed to repair it and will just return it to you.

Do I have to pay for shipping?
A little bit. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the pack to Osprey, and they will pay shipping to return the pack via UPS or FedEx. Osprey cannot be held responsible if packages get lost in transit, so make sure you get a tracking number when you ship your pack out. Also, if you use expedited shipping be sure to let Osprey know (866-314-3130). They, in turn, will give your pack priority processing and return it using a similar expedited shipping method.

Do I have to register my pack to take advantage of this incredible guarantee, and/or need to be the original owner of my Osprey pack?
No! Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee is truly ALL MIGHTY. If you own an Osprey pack that needs to be repaired they will repair or replace it.

JUST A HEADS UP: If your Osprey product is not repairable and is replaced, the original product will not be returned to you. They will try really really hard to repair your pack, but if they are unable to make a functional repair, they will replace it. For products that are no longer in production you will be contacted by Osprey to discuss replacement options.

All good answers. So what is NOT covered?
• Osprey program packs or any Osprey pack used by outdoor programs are ONLY covered under Osprey's Program Pack Warranty, NOT AMG.
• Size and/or fit issues. Make sure you buy a pack that fits. Check out the size guide on Osprey product pages for more info.
• Personal preferences like colors you don't like, style of the pack, or not enough/too much room in your pack. Check the product description, features, specifications, and size guide to make sure you are ordering the right pack for you.
• Third party Repairs or replacements. Send your Osprey pack to Osprey and Osprey only to get fixed. Easy as that. And don't try fixing things yourself.
• Cosmetic wear and tear including any reasonable aging of your pack that affects only the appearance and not the function of your pack. Be proud of those scars!
• B.A.M.G. (Before All Mighty Guarantee) Repair Work. The All Mighty Guarantee applies only to repairs requested on or after January 1, 2009.
• A Osprey Hydraulics reservoir is covered by a limited 1-year warranty, which is the reasonable lifespan of a reservoir. Pouring and storing of warm/hot or boiling water in your reservoir WILL VOID your warranty, so don't do that. Reservoirs are NOT designed to contain or handle liquids at temperature.
