The Osprey Exos 38 Pack is a ultralight backpack for minimalist hikers. The smallest of the brood, the Exos 38 brings you comfort while remaining lightweight for your speedy adventures on the trail. The comfort comes from the ExoForm™ harness and hipbelt, a mesh covered EVA foam that won't cut into your skin and will provide breathability. The AirSpeed™ suspension steps in for internal support with its 6065 aluminum alloy frame. You can always drop more weight from the pack by removing the top pocket and sleeping pad straps, or if you need more gear, attach it using the tie-off points at the front.

Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Osprey Airspeed

Osprey Airspeed
Using peripheral suspension design this lightweight, three dimensional suspension eliminates foam and backpanel materials and replaces it with lightweight suspended mesh. Three dimensionally shaped to allow maximum airflow and optimal tension and load carry sets Osprey apart from other tensioned mesh backpacks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features! Remarkable pack! Bought Exos 58 couple years ago for JMT and it held up pretty well. Decided to buy another one but smaller Exos 38 for weekend hikes. Features I like are the vented suspension and hip/shoulder straps, the various pockets and compression options, the removable top hood, and the trekking pole holders. Perfect for super light backpacking and day hiking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lightweight Overnighter / Daypack I bought this as a summer day hike pack for when I didn't want to take my bigger Exos 48. Incredibly light and very comfortable compared to the older version from a few years back. It's a very durable pack with well thought out pockets. I love that the lid detaches and also love the trekking pole stow on the go feature which makes it really easy to put away your trekking poles without having to take off your pack. Another home run from Osprey.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tins of Room I bought this pack for day hikes in the Tetons. Love It, it’s light, supported well, you back don’t sweat, tons of places to lash extras on. Made my trip to Wyoming worth it !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thru-hiker tried, tested and approved! I am a long distance hikers with two Appalachian Trail thru-hikes under my belt and around 5,000 miles hiked. I've used and been exposed to many types of packs from those weighing ounces to 5 or 6 lbs. But I've never seen a better made pack than the Osprey Exos 58. My first impression was good at REI when I loaded it with all of my gear and put it on was bliss as it fit comfortably and was so light. As I hiked the pack continued to meet and exceed my expectations as I exceeded the pack weight limitations of around 30 lbs by 15 lbs with 45lbs with a weeks worth of food and water. (Not recommended long term) I love the "trampoline" where the pack frame is about 2" off of your back and a mesh sits on your back so that wind passes between you and your pack preventing the awful sweaty pack back! I'm not the only one who loves this pack as on my AT thru-hike this pack is becoming the dominant pack in the AppalachianTrail community. Check it out for yourself and you may soon own one of your own! - Squarepeg 2013 250 mile Appalachian Trail section hiker, 2015 & 2016 Appalachian Trail thru-hiker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favorite Backpack This is my go-to backpack for extended backpacking trips. It is lightweight without completing sacrificing framing so it does handle heavy awkward objects, such as bear canisters. Obviously built with minimalism in mind, Osprey has done certain things to make it more comfortable. I do not recommend heavy loads with this pack. This is for the lightweight backpacker only.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these packs! After months of searching for a good pack for day hikes up 14ers I finally choose the Exos 38. One of the best packs I've ever owned. The removable top compartment isn't a feature I'll ever use so the extra material that serves as the secondary top cover is a slight annoyance. The top compartment also doesn't sit very well if the pack isn't fully loaded up. And other than the lack of color options(wishing there was a dark grey/burnt orange, but I'm nitpicking) this pack is solid. I've used the 38 and 58 on multiple 12+ mile hikes and never had any problems. Still amazed that it's as light as it is for what it can carry. I used to be a devoted Black Diamond pack user. Osprey has pretty much won me over with the Exos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This pack is outstanding. I love it. It's like your crush loving you back (and your back). I've been struggling to get hooked up with the right daypack and I am now happily married to this one. Still in the honeymoon period, but I'm feeling like this will last.,,,,I've taken this on 3 hikes now and I feel like I have returned to my true nature. It is so light and supportive and... freeing. I have purposely over-packed it to enhance my training and to test out the equipment and I can't find any complaint with it. This thing is ready to get moving. I took it to the top of the Castle Dome Trail with 25 lbs and came home feeling fine. No hurts, grievances, or regrets.,,,,-The fabric is super stretchy and durable (so far).,,-The straps are not Isoform, but they're a cut above other brands' glorified bookbag straps.,,-The blue is striking. Think Duke jerseys.,,-The Flap Jacket is the BEST new feature. I just stuff my lid with the usual and stick that in my bag like a dry sack.,,-Hip pockets are bigger than most.,,-Airspeed technology stands as a testament to human ingenuity. ,,,,A+

Does it fit in the overhead of a plane?

Asked by: millsy
Hiya millsy530, thanks for your question! The dimensions for this bag are 20 x 13 x 12 inches, which fits within the the maximum dimensions requirements for a carry-on bag (9 x 14 x 22 inches, including handles and wheels). That said, it is always a good idea to confirm with the airline. Hope this helps!

What is a good size for a more weekend camp out or a day pack for an out of country trip?

Asked by: natedog3299
It all depends on what you are planning on putting in it for your trip. To kind of put it in perspective, this is 38 liters, whereas an average school backpack is around 25 liters. This is about 1 and a half times bigger than your average school bag, so you should be able to fit quite a few things for a trip or even just a weekend of camping.

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size the pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate.

• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size chart above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelt size info above to help determine your ideal pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

ALL MIGHTY GUARANTEE - Osprey's Lifetime Warranty

When Osprey celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2009 they launched The Osprey All Mighty Guarantee. What that means to you is ANY Osprey product purchased at ANY time is covered. Any product, any reason, any era - the all encompassing Osprey lifetime warranty ensures their dedication to superior design, craftsmanship and quality of their products is backed up by their actions to replace or repair a pack so it lasts a lifetime. Or two.

Here are some details.... Osprey will repair for any reason, free of charge, any damage or defect in their products, whether it was purchased back in 1974, or ordered right now from this site. If they are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, they will happily replace it. Osprey proudly stands behind the All Mighty Guarantee, so much so that it bears the signature of company founder and head designer, Mike Pfotenhauer.

Some Osprey All Mighty Guarantee FAQs:

What do I do if my Osprey pack needs to be repaired?
If you live in the United States and need a repair done on your Osprey pack, you will first need to obtain a Return Authorization number. You can do this by reaching their Returns Department at 866-314-3130, or using the information that is provided with a new Osprey pack.

What do I do if I just need a replacement pack part like a buckle?
Give Osprey a call at 866-314-3130 and they will take care of you.

How long will it take?
You can tell Osprey you need the pack returned by a certain date when you request a Return Authorization number, and they will do their absolute best to meet that deadline.

What if my pack is super dirty and stinks?
Clean it before you send it to Osprey to get repaired. The real reason is that there is a law that says if your gear is too dirty or odiferous (smelly), Osprey is not allowed to repair it and will just return it to you.

Do I have to pay for shipping?
A little bit. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the pack to Osprey, and they will pay shipping to return the pack via UPS or FedEx. Osprey cannot be held responsible if packages get lost in transit, so make sure you get a tracking number when you ship your pack out. Also, if you use expedited shipping be sure to let Osprey know (866-314-3130). They, in turn, will give your pack priority processing and return it using a similar expedited shipping method.

Do I have to register my pack to take advantage of this incredible guarantee, and/or need to be the original owner of my Osprey pack?
No! Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee is truly ALL MIGHTY. If you own an Osprey pack that needs to be repaired they will repair or replace it.

JUST A HEADS UP: If your Osprey product is not repairable and is replaced, the original product will not be returned to you. They will try really really hard to repair your pack, but if they are unable to make a functional repair, they will replace it. For products that are no longer in production you will be contacted by Osprey to discuss replacement options.

All good answers. So what is NOT covered?
• Osprey program packs or any Osprey pack used by outdoor programs are ONLY covered under Osprey's Program Pack Warranty, NOT AMG.
• Size and/or fit issues. Make sure you buy a pack that fits. Check out the size guide on Osprey product pages for more info.
• Personal preferences like colors you don't like, style of the pack, or not enough/too much room in your pack. Check the product description, features, specifications, and size guide to make sure you are ordering the right pack for you.
• Third party Repairs or replacements. Send your Osprey pack to Osprey and Osprey only to get fixed. Easy as that. And don't try fixing things yourself.
• Cosmetic wear and tear including any reasonable aging of your pack that affects only the appearance and not the function of your pack. Be proud of those scars!
• B.A.M.G. (Before All Mighty Guarantee) Repair Work. The All Mighty Guarantee applies only to repairs requested on or after January 1, 2009.
• A Osprey Hydraulics reservoir is covered by a limited 1-year warranty, which is the reasonable lifespan of a reservoir. Pouring and storing of warm/hot or boiling water in your reservoir WILL VOID your warranty, so don't do that. Reservoirs are NOT designed to contain or handle liquids at temperature.
