The Marmot Men's Minimalist Jacket is a Gore-Tex Paclite jacket for the backpacker that needs lightweight, waterproof protection. The Minimalist is light and simple, yet strong enough to block wind and rain (even snow!) from ruining your trek from camp to camp. The zippered hand pockets and chest pocket secure small items close by when trudging through a down pour, with storm flaps and a water resistant zipper for extra protection on the inside. Cinch the hood and hem down with elastic draw cords and wrap your wrists with Velcro straps to prevent the wind from blowing the jacket and hood all willy-nilly. As you heat up from your hiking exertions, open the pit zips to let in a bit of fresh air right at the core.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PERFECT RAIN JACKET - TESTED AND APPROVED I purchased this jacket a few months ago and used it mainly for use to and from work and some occasional social outings with friends if it’s raining and it held up as stated as a water proof jacket. In addition, I was invited to a 4 day backpacking excursion on the Appalachian Trail in Vermont this past October, and let me say with confidence, it rained for a good two hours and again, this jacket kept me dry with no issues. it suited perfectly as a light rain jacket. My next Minimalist jacket will be the bright orange that I will be using for hunting next fall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Rain Coat Nice, minimal design (wish it had more of a tailored fit). Handy pocket placement and adjustable hood. Keeps rain and moisture out, although I haven't worn it out in a downpour just yet. Overall, a quality jacket by Marmot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic water proofing I bought this jacket in August for rain and its one of the best jackets I have ever bought. I have to ride my bike to and from class, sometimes in heavy rain, and it works perfectly, I'm always dry when I arrive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad I pulled the Trigger I usually ‘suffer’ from post-purchase dissonance, expectations not met. Not this time! ALL the functionality I need/want and great value. It sheds water, especially the hood brim; it is great at letting heat and vapor out. Attention to details on zipper, hood cinch, interior...all great. Bought an Arc’teryx SL for my son, compared them, still happy. The Minimalist has all the features at a much lower cost.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall solid jacket for day to day activities. Good windbreaker. Decent Waterproofing. Good Fit. It breaks wind really well, I feel solid in it. Waterproofing is a little sub-par compared to what I expected. Rather than rolling off my shoulders, it kinda soaks into the jacket. Kinda opposite of what I expected from a GORE jacket. I stay dry in it though, even through a heavy storm. Fit is STELLAR. Size medium fit my 5'11 170 lb frame perfectly. Nice hoodie and great pockets.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too Small I wear a medium precip, but the medium minimalist is too tight in shoulders and chest. I am 5'7" 180lb, muscular build. The jacket looked very nice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Extremely waterproof I found the Minimalist Jacket the type of jacket to wear in a downpour. It is very waterproof. I found it to be not as breathable or flexible as the Marmot Precip jacket, my son has. Minimalist would be a great jacket for boating where maximum waterproofing surpasses breathability as a priority.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does Everything it Should I've owned my Minimalist for almost two years now. It's my go-to shell in rain or snow. I've worn it hiking in the rain to the Pipe Dream Cave in Maple Canyon. I've worn it sledding with my kids at Doughnut Falls; I've worn it while shooting local news in a sleet storm. Basically it's handled every challenge I've thrown at it beautifully. It breathes very well and it's very water repellent. Last week I did wash it in Storm to give it a boost and it is as good as new. Looking forward to another wet season in this shell.y

It seems Marmot had a bad run of these jackets between 1 and 2 years ago with the waterproofing not being up to snuff. Has that been fixed, and do you only stock the "fixed" jackets?

Asked by: Mikey
Hiya Mikey, thanks for your question! The faulty jackets you are referring to were corrected about 3 years ago. We carry the newest version, which came out in Spring 2016. If you have a faulty jacket, you can contact Marmot for a replacement. (It is covered under their warranty program.) Hope this helps!

Would this jacket be an ok shell layer for Kilimanjaro or would something more substantial be warranted? Thanks.

Asked by: wildcatpat64
Thanks for the question! The Minimalist Jacket is a perfect layering piece for Kilimanjaro. Since you will be going thru four different climate zones, you could potentially use it in all four. You will have rain, wind, snow, and ice protection and will still be small enough to be packed into its own pocket. Bonus! - it has pit-zips in case you need to use it in the tropical zone. I think you picked a great jacket. If you want more options, then I would take a look at The North Face Men's Resolve 2 Jacket. I included a link below. I hope this helps a little. Have a great trip!

Can Goretex light jackets like this one be used during the winter months in harsh, cold wintery and snowy conditions (with insulation underneath, obviously)? Or should one buy a thicker Goretex jacket? Thanks!

Asked by: MrMojo
Howdy Mr. Mojo! Thanks for asking. Yes, you can definitely use this bad boy throughout winter as long as you have insulation underneath! This item has a regular fit, but if you plan on wearing very thick layers underneath, like a thick sweater and a very puffy down jacket, you might want to go with one size up.
