The Marmot Men's Minimalist Jacket is a Gore-Tex Paclite jacket for the backpacker that needs lightweight, waterproof protection. The Minimalist is light and simple, yet strong enough to block wind and rain (even snow!) from ruining your trek from camp to camp. The zippered hand pockets and chest pocket secure small items close by when trudging through a down pour, with storm flaps and a water resistant zipper for extra protection on the inside. Cinch the hood and hem down with elastic draw cords and wrap your wrists with Velcro straps to prevent the wind from blowing the jacket and hood all willy-nilly. As you heat up from your hiking exertions, open the pit zips to let in a bit of fresh air right at the core.

GORE-TEX Paclite

GORE-TEX Paclite
GORE-TEX Paclite is the gold standard for lightweight, breathable elemental protection. Paclite jackets are extremely packable and great to have on hand for windy or rainy conditions. They'll keep your torso dry and comfortable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Jacket I just purchased this jacket so I have not been able to get out and use it in the rain and snow just yet. But I did want to mention the size and fit of this jacket. It fits a bit slimmer then I had anticipated, which might make layering in the winter snugger then I would like it to be. Otherwise I think this is the best deal on the market for a Gore-Tex Paclite rain jacket. The hood is a good size for a casual around-town jacket. The construction of the jacket is very solid, Marmot makes a beautiful product. If you want a gore-tex paclite jacket but dont want to spend close to 300 bucks on an Arcteryx or 250 on a patagonia, this is the way to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great year round jacket. Highly waterproof and breaths well. I purchased this jacket last fall for all the rain we were having and ended up working great in a layering system for winter. The material is made with Gore-tex which produces a highly waterproof yet breathable jacket. The pit zips allow you to stay cool while shedding summer rain on the trail. It also works well blocking cold winter winds when layered over a fleece. It actually block wind so well I use it as a motorcycle jacket. It can be compressed small enough to fit in the chest pocket, which makes it great for carrying in a backpack. I recommend this product to anyone looking for a year round rain jacket. Plus Marmot has a lifetime guarantee!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile Gore-Tex Shell I have owned this jacket for 2 years and I find it is thicker than other rain shells. This allows the jacket to be used in more weather conditions than just rain. It has pit zips for ventilation when you're hot. I have sailed to the Bahamas Ft. Lauderdale and it worked flawlessly in the rough sea conditions. I recently took it to New Zealand on the Routeburn Great Walk and it was money. I also used this as a ski jacket at Loveland, CO and Mt. Rose, Lake Tahoe in Jan/Feb. As long as you have the proper layers underneath, I find this shell to be awesome all year round. I’m 6’4” 190lbs and own the XL, it is a regular fit, not slim/athletic. Adjustable hood is crap, the Velcro is weak. 4.5/5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great jacket all around I bought this jacket for hiking trips to pack easily and not be so bulky but keep the wind and rain out when needed. Haven't had a chance to wear in the rain but love wearing it as everyday jacket in MI winter even with a fleece underneath. Keeps me plenty warm and comfortable without the bulk. Love it so far! My wife has the same jacket and loves hers too however she wishes the women's version had a chest pocket as the men's version does.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A True Minimalist Jacket The Marmot Minimalist Jacket is an awesome light weight, water proof Gore-tex shell. It is VERY thin and should be paired with a mid-layer for colder weather. It is waterproof and acts as a great rain jacket. ,,,,This is a must have if you are going to be on the trail for a few days, especially if you live in a climate that gets a lot of rain. I bring this jacket on every trip and have had to use it a few times for rain. I actually use this jacket a lot at home as a rain jacket. ,,,,There are not a lot of extra features or pockets, hence the "minimalist" title. ,,,,It is also not very breathable since it has the Gore-tex membrane. If you are hiking in the rain and it is warm out, make sure to use the ventilation zippers under the arms to help circulate airflow.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from So close! Let me start this review by saying I am a huge Marmot fan. I purchased this jacket with the intent of wearing it as a ski shell. When it arrived it was as awesome as advertised with the exception of one aspect - the sleeves were entirely too long. I am 5'11" and have worn nothing but medium size shirts and jackets for the past 10 years. The length and fit of the core jacket were perfect but oddly the sleeves were at least 4 inches too long which is a bummer since I loved all of the other features that this jacket offered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight, great water-resistant raincoat! I've used this for everything from a light drizzle to a torrential downpour. And i'm completely dry. It's basically a regular fit, so if you want a more snug fit, buy a size smaller. I'm 5'7", 145 pounds with broad shoulders and back, and the small fits like a regular jacket. It's lightweight, so you can layer underneath. But, you can also wear it during the humid summer and you won't necessarily be sweating a ton underneath.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good Jacket Very happy with this purchase. Got it in 'Team Red' and it looks sick. The fit is great, looks slim but is big enough to wear as an outer layer which is what it's meant for obviously. Keeps me completely dry of course, the adjustable wrist openings are a nice touch as I use it for biking mostly. The only thing is that the hood doesn't quite fit over my helmet, but zipped all the way up the jacket is enough to keep comfy.

It seems Marmot had a bad run of these jackets between 1 and 2 years ago with the waterproofing not being up to snuff. Has that been fixed, and do you only stock the "fixed" jackets?

Asked by: Mikey
Hiya Mikey, thanks for your question! The faulty jackets you are referring to were corrected about 3 years ago. We carry the newest version, which came out in Spring 2016. If you have a faulty jacket, you can contact Marmot for a replacement. (It is covered under their warranty program.) Hope this helps!

Would this jacket be an ok shell layer for Kilimanjaro or would something more substantial be warranted? Thanks.

Asked by: wildcatpat64
Thanks for the question! The Minimalist Jacket is a perfect layering piece for Kilimanjaro. Since you will be going thru four different climate zones, you could potentially use it in all four. You will have rain, wind, snow, and ice protection and will still be small enough to be packed into its own pocket. Bonus! - it has pit-zips in case you need to use it in the tropical zone. I think you picked a great jacket. If you want more options, then I would take a look at The North Face Men's Resolve 2 Jacket. I included a link below. I hope this helps a little. Have a great trip!

Can Goretex light jackets like this one be used during the winter months in harsh, cold wintery and snowy conditions (with insulation underneath, obviously)? Or should one buy a thicker Goretex jacket? Thanks!

Asked by: MrMojo
Howdy Mr. Mojo! Thanks for asking. Yes, you can definitely use this bad boy throughout winter as long as you have insulation underneath! This item has a regular fit, but if you plan on wearing very thick layers underneath, like a thick sweater and a very puffy down jacket, you might want to go with one size up.
