Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Device! I'm a huge face of the Lifeguard. I've mostly used regular ATCs for belay and I've had a little experience with a GriGri. I like the simple design and the all metal construction. The size is great. The open concept won't allow dirt and grime to hide inside. It locks up nice and tight on falls or when I take my climber. The mechanism has a good feel when lowering. It doesn't bind much up when feeding rope to the climber. Great product from Mad Rock. I'd recommend this over the GriGri.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from so much better than my grigri! I've had this device for a little over a year and love it! It's much smoother to pay out slack lead belaying than the grigri and fits a lot more comfortably in my hand. I mostly belay guys who outweigh me by a good 60 lbs and sometimes run the rope through an extra carabiner to add a little extra friction on the lower, which can be a little more awkward than with a grigr.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 9 out of 10 This thing is great. Easy to pay out rope quickly for lead climbing, great for top rope, works great for route setting or top rope solo (probably not an approved use). It is compact, not too heavy and the price beats the competition. The only downfall is lowering, where I find it a struggle to lower partners smoothly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light weight and very smooth feed on lead belay. My rack was stolen out of my car a few weeks ago and I decided to go with some of the newer lighter weight tech in my replacements. I replaced my tango cinch (which I loved) with this Mad Rock after reading some blogs and watching some comparison videos. Have an easy and smooth feed on lead belay and less friction on the lower are important to me. This does not disappoint! It took me a climb or two to get used to the hand position (the Cinch had a very unique and specific hold technique), and then it was gravy. I would say the rope feed feels a lot like using an ATC. Easy to feed back and forth in both directions, but with the added back up of the brake assist. I’ve let a few buddies at the crag give this a shot, and I am anticipating some additional conversions. This is a great device. It is all metal which feels like a bonus.
