Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Stove! I have had a few of these over the years. Not that I needed more than one, but it's such an excellent stove that I seem to accumulate them. The Good - The stove is easily field maintained and will last a life time. It boils quickly and can simmer though not extremely well. The new version is a definite improvement, given the new design of the legs ads stability on top of the already reliable performance. The Bad - My only knock on this stove is the pump. While I can talk all day about how great the stove is, the system really declines with this plastic pump. I have had about three pumps die on me. The old pump would crack in the cold and the plunger would release, though it would still operate just fine. However, I have had instances with the newer style pump where it just dies, and that's it. In this case you'd better hope that your buddies stove runs on the same fuel or you'll be eating something very cold or dry for the remainder of your trip. MSR - Design a new metal pump, otherwise you got it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for Power Outages Too I bought my Whisperlite International in 1994. I have used it bicycle touring , camping, backpacking, and on a 33 day moped ride. Even after years of dormancy in storage it came to life as usual. I have even been able to use 2-cycle oil mixed fuel in a pinch with immediately noticible soot increase and on one occasion 70% isopropyl alcohol too (leaves a watery residue in the fuel bottle that will not burn and might freeze). I do not endorse these fuels. I'm just saying I was able to get food cooked; but with consequences. I have put many miles and many hours on my stove and it now needs a pump rebuild because the rubber parts have exceeded their expected lifespan. All else is in order and I anticipate getting at least another 20 years of use. I for safety's sake I recommend a O- Ring replacement every few years Before a leak and it's potentially harmful consequences occurs in the back country . I even found this to be a good emergency stove when the power was out to my home and it's electric range. I just swapped cooking to the pic-nic table outdoors after shoveling away the snow and enjoyed hot meals while the neighbors were evacuating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most reliable I'm so happy that I got my hand on a whisperlite instead of something else. I've been using the whisperlite stove for a year now. From -30 degrees celcius to +30 degrees celcius, In winter storms and in heavy summer rain and I've never had any problem. It's amazing how reliable the stove is when it's so simple and lightweight. Alot of my buddys been using Primus and Optimus stoves - And they work aswell. As long it's perfect conditions. They tend to fail when you need a hot meal or when you really need to melt some snow to get water.. + Reliable + Durable + Lightweight + Melts snow in a good pace + Fuel efficient + Easy to handle - Sooting pretty fast (But not a problem, easy to fix)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Almost perfect for everything! I had used a Whisperlite in the past and decided to buy one last summer. I work a rigorous field season backpacking ~50 days in our short Montana summer. We had been using the MSR pocket rocket and burning through a lot of fuel over the course of our 7 day trips. After picking up the Whisperlite the amount spent on fuel drastically decreased. The pocket rocket was nice because it had a simmer setting however if you're going for fuel efficiency over long cook times and long trips the Whisperlite is definitely the way to go. This thing does not simmer so if that is important to you go for the Dragonfly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has served me for a long time This was another piece of equipment that I had put extensive research into in order to get the best possible performance for the best price. This is a robustly built little stove. It is super small when folded up, light and produces great and fast heat. It cleans easy and I have never had any kinds of problems with it. I have never needed to use the deisel/kerosene jet that comes with the International model but it takes up very little space and its nice to know I have the versatility if I need it. Its a great little stove and nice to not have to buy little compressed gas throwaway canisters of fuel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 22 years and going! I have purchased every piece of gear for bike touring, backpacking, camping, etc. Every piece of gear base eventually had to be replaced: some pieces of gear several times. I've been through 6 tents, 5 sleeping bags, 3 backpacks, 2 pot sets, 3 sets of bike panniers... you name it. Only one item has persisted since my teenage years: the MSR Whisperlite International. It has been around the world, used primarily with automotive fuel for consecutive days (on a few year long trips and also multi-month trips) and it has been 100% reliable throughout that time. I think about it regularly in wonderment at how something could last so long.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super lightweight - great buy! I've had this stove for about 5 years now and it's great. It's very lightweight, and the fuel canister can be refilled which means less waste in the waste stream, and you can bring as much or as little fuel as you need. It's a bit tricky to get the hang of preheating the coils, but once you figure it out it's easy. I'd also say that this is a stove that will last a long, long time - but you'll need to figure out how to take it entirely apart, clean it, and replace broken parts. However, this is exactly what I want in a stove, something that is made well and can be fixed when it breaks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tried and True I've had this stove for 8 years. It has gone through two thru hikes, multiple water submersions, an Aconcagua expedition and plenty of other high altitude trips. Whether it's cold or hot, high or low, soaking wet or dry as a desert, this puppy always fires up like a rocket. Not to mention it runs on anything nicer than crude oil. It is heavier than a lot of stoves on the market and way more primitive looking, however, reliability pays out 100% better than lightweight when it comes to a stove on a long trip. Only problem I've ever had was crack in the fuel pump while doing some maintenance. I talked to customer service and they got me a new part in no time. This stove is rock solid and will last the ages.

What is the diff from the international MSR and the multi fuel version aside from $30??

Asked by: Northeastern
Hey there, The MSR WhisperLite Universal Backpacking Stove has a few added benefits such as the ability to use canister fuel and Isobutane-propane in addition to Kerosene, Auto, and White gas. So Universal.
