Rated 1 out of 5 by from Died after 15 liters! Not ready for field use. I purchased the MSR Guardian after speaking with MSR on 3 different occasions as well as several local shops. All assured me the Guardian was the perfect filter to take to the Grand Canyon to filter silty water. After filtering 15 liters of moderately silty water the filter died, all the water was being returned via the outlet hose. Following the directions, I cleaned the pressure relief valve but found it to be perfectly clean. The next step in the instructions is to replace the filter, unfortunately not an option deep in a remote section of the Grand Canyon. The filter appeared to be perfectly clean. When I called MSR, they admitted the Guardian has problems with silty water and was told “we’ve had problems with this pump”. Of course this is unacceptable since they advertise this pump as being made for “worse case sediment”. This ruined a 7 day backpack and forced us to hike out and drive 50 miles to purchase some treatment tables. I should have had a backup but everyone I talked to about this pump assured me of its reliability. I expected much more of this product and from MSR Customer service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ULTIMATE PURIFIER ! Took it to my favorite spot up in the mountains and purified water that was brown from rain drainage coming off the mountain , tasted great and no grit , the next test I put it through was to purify the water that was in my green un cleaned swimming pool , tasted great

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Guardian Filter I purchased this product a few months ago and it has performed just as advertised. We did a six day trek on the PCT last month finishing with The Whitney Summit. The three of us relied solely on the Guardian for our water purification. The speed and ease of use was great. We also own a couple of other MSR filters, but they have been stored away for back up. No drops just clean fresh tasting water. Since our PCT trek, we have hoofed it into some areas with not the greatest selection of running creeks, I would say a couple of times we pulled from stagnant pools, but still the Guardian performed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beyond Excited I think the other review is a mistake, as the user is mentioning "cleaning the ceramic filter", as well as buying the product in 2015 (The Guardian is new for 2016). I have yet to put my Guardian through the ringer (will update when I do), but so far is appears to work as advertised. I performed an integrity test first thing and it's functional in that regard. I've thus far used the pump from small puddles where the pre-filter cannot be fully submerged and have not had any issues (basically works as advertised), but have yet to pump from silty and dirty sources. I will say the water thus far tastes great and the act of pumping is fast and not strenuous. While pumping, you can see the 10% backflushed water exiting, so I assume that's also working without issue. The device is somewhat bulky, but really it's not much bigger or heavier than comparable products that don't purify (i.e. filter viruses). It includes a nifty little zippered cloth storage case as well. If the hose is wrapped tightly and neatly around the device, the pump handle can close over the rubbery hose end and hold the wrapped up tubes in place very conveniently. If the pre-filter and backflushing mechanism works in really silty, muddy sources as advertised (I don't see why it won't), then I'll likely have this device for many decades. It seems very sturdy and it's totally believable that it meets the advertised crush/drop/freeze tests. Any part that might be susceptible to long term wear (like the pump handle, tubes/pre-filter, etc.) appear to be, or clearly are, replaceable. In short, this revolutionary device is thus far working exactly as you'd expect it to from the Peru video, etc. and gives me the confidence to partake in much longer backpacking trips in the desert where adequate sources are rare and other pumps require a lot of babying. The convenience factor is through the roof on this product, and while everybody else is wasting daylight waiting on iodine tablets, finicky filters that require additional treatment for viruses and/or careful source selection, gravity fed filters, etc. I'm confidently plopping my Guardian in whatever dirty, nasty source I come upon, pumping for a few seconds, and then ready to go. As a result, I carry much less water, and thus weight, in general because I no longer have to be picky about where I'm getting my water. Lastly, one thing I do hear from people interested in the Guardian is "$350, that's awfully steep". As far as initial investment goes, yes, it is markedly more than other pumps/filters, but over the long run, iodine tablets can cost over $3500 for 10,000L of purification (and don't filter particulate). Other purification methods take time, require a lot more care an attention, break frequently (I'm looking at you, Steripen), require much more frequent filter changes, etc. Doing the math for my own personal needs, the Guardian comes out as by far the most economical and convenient product over the long run, but I encourage people to consider their own specific needs.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from leaking after one month of use Major leak at the base of the filter. after only one month of purchase. I bought 4 for our outdoor program and 3 of them are leaking. there is definitely a manufacturing problem. Too bad the few time it worked it was great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great filter. easy to use So bought this filter cause I wasted 80$ on a katadyn vario just to have it break on first time use during a backpacking trip. Went recently on a 4 day trip on the buffalo river with the guardian. Prob overkill but I enjoy the ease of mind I don't have to worry about viruses and the durability seems to be way greater then other filters. My only problem I noticed it that it leaks water from plunger when pulling handle out. I haven't even had this product for 3 months now and seems that the O ring is bad and or failing. 350$ price tag i'd expect longer use. Will get with MSR and see if they can offer any help. Over all experience though has been great. 2 liters of water lasted me the whole trip and refill didn't take long at all. absolutely love how the hoses just wrap around the filter... so great and easy. Like the case it comes with as well very compact and fits well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ultra fast! I bought the Guardian about a month ago and put it to the test up in the Cascades as I was the water monger for four of us. It was a three day hike and we needed about 30 gallons of water for drinking and cooking. The Guardian is ultrafast and refilling water bottles and platypus bags. I've used filters in the past and is always in conditions where we needed to move quickly and I wish I had the Guardian with me on those trips. The other surprise was how great the water tasted after it went through the guardian. I usually have some water enhancement drops for flavor but there was no need is the water tasted so pure and clean. It is definitely worth the money anytime you need a product to get you through the good hike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pumps super fast and rock solid! Excellent filter- pumps 2-3 times faster than the miniworks and only a couple oz heavier. I had a Miniworks EX- it was very dependable but sometimes slow and an arm workout after hiking 15-20 miles daily on the Appalachain Trail. Was looking at the Hyperflow- and after you add the wide mouth bottle to the system (required to do backflushes) the weight almost equals the Guardian. And the Hyperflow you must backflush every 8-10 liters. Dump your Nalgenes- use a 1L Aquafina water bottle- u would be surprised how much a Nalgene weighs when compared to a Aquafina water bottle. By all means $349 is not cheap, but look around and you can always find coupons. Dump the Guardian zipper "toiletry style" bag it comes with and use your Miniworks bag (it fits) or a 1 gallon Ziploc. This filter is definitely worth it considering the speed, 0.02 micron filtration rate, and self cleaning feature. If you have the cash buy it, if not save up and buy it, don't play around with the Miniworks and your green scrubbie pad, or the Hyperflow and the constant backflushing while disassembling it losing the small pieces of the forest floor. Water filtration is one of your most important pieces of gear- don't skimp- buy the Guardian and buy MSR- I have their tents, trekking poles, stoves and their filters- MSR is solid - I wouldn't rely on anyone else. Just BUY THE BEST THE FIRST TIME! I only rely on MSR in the backcountry.

For the MSR Guardian; are spare parts/components available? Or is a second unit the best "spare"?

Asked by: iceman01
Hey there, Thanks for reaching out to us! Your best bet if you're seeking spare parts would be to contact MSR directly at: 206-505-9500.

I didn't see any information on whether the filter could be changed, or if there were any indicators on when it needed changed. Looks awesome, definitely considering the purchase.

Asked by: Mike
Hey there, Thanks for the question. The filter cartridge on this item can be replaced/changed. You typically will know to change it when the flow rate drops to less than 1L a minute when pumping 70 strokes per minute. The filter will still be purifying water, but as the flow rate drops with use more wear appears on the internal parts. I hope this helps.

Will this convert salt water?

Asked by: Duke
No, this is simply a filter which does not remove chemicals, toxins, or heavy metals. It is effective down to 0.02µm (microns). (Technical info from the MSR website). If you're looking for a portable, hand operated desalinator, check out Katadyn.
