Product Description Item No.   10031903

The Vario combines individual efficiency with the simplest possible handling. The technology it uses consists of three filter levels: a high-performance glass fibre filter, a ceramic pre-filter that can be adjusted individually according to the cloudiness of the water, and active charcoal for eliminating odors. Anyone who needs up to two liters of drinking water per minute can use the glass fiber and active charcoal filter. If the water is extremely cloudy, the ceramic pre-filter can be fitted in a moment in order to extend the service life of the glass fiber filter. The Vario is compatible with most standard outdoor bottles and hydration bladders.

FEATURES of the Katadyn Vario Water Filter

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter, fast fill, bomber construction. Some buddies and I just went winter camping in northern Michigan and I took this filter along with me. The first night dropped down to -11 degrees, and the last thing we wanted to do was waste time and fuel melting snow. I excitedly busted out the Vario for the first time and ran down to the river. The Vario performed flawlessly, filled my bottle so quick I didn't even notice water spilling over the bottle, and was easy to operate even with gloves on. I didn't notice the extra weight in my pack at all, and because of its sturdy construction I wasn't worried about it cracking or freezing. I have used the MSR waterworks filter, and this one blows it out of the water.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Service from Katadyn Somewhere in between airline travel (baggage goons) and storage the plastic piece on the outside of the pump that holds the tubing for the pre-filter and brings water into the internal filters had become weakened. As I was prepping the unit for an AT adventure, this piece broke completely off the unit. This was the night before leaving and it was not a repair that could be made short of getting a brand new replacement piece. For this trip we used the steripen and sediment filter. ,,,,Katadyn customer service rocked! They knew what I was talking about and immediately sent off a new replacement piece (warranty and no cost). The piece was easy to replace. ,,,,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filter For Fast Pumping and Large Groups. If you're looking for a quick filter, this is it. There are two different settings that you can use, one for quick pumping and one for longer filter life. I always use the longer filter life setting and this thing still blazes through liters and liters of water. It is a little heavier and bulkier than other filters out there, but for it's speed and ease of use I don't mind. I love the fact that it screws onto Nalgenes so you don't have to worry about spilling or extra hoses. I have had some leaking from the housing when pumping, but once I reseal it with the supplied lube it's good to go again. Also the charcoal makes the water taste great. You won't be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An absolutely great water filter I got this filter a while back because I was tired of borrowing other peoples' when I was going camping. Plus I had enough Moosejaw points saved up to get it for free so the price was right! I agree with the majority of the other reviewers when I say that this is a stellar filter. It's quick when you need it, and, with the activated carbon core you can drink with confidence from wherever you choose to fill your bottles. I especially like how a widemouth nalgene screws directly into the bottom so you don't have try and hold the bottles with your feet (or wish you had a third arm/prehensile tail) while you pump.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite piece of equipment I buy a lot of stuff from this site, sometimes compulsively. Two comments on that: (1) I have a problem (ha). (2) When I call one thing out of that mountain of things my favorite, the judgement is meaningful. I trust this filter with my life. Not only has its filter mechanism never failed, but its mechanical operations are smooth and waste very little of my arm-pumpin' fury. I don't even bother bringing back-up purification tablets anymore (extra ounces). Sure this weighs more than those tablets do, but (1) it's silly to bring both now and (2) this proves far tastier/works far better than those. I've never once cared about the added weight in my pack. The Vario, she's worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great buy for the .. if you value the health of your gut.. you will go with it There is a reason why this filter is the best selling water filtration system for backpacking on the market.. if you check the in action photos for this product, you may see me using the Vario to purify the super silty muck water of the Colorado River at Spanish Bottom, Needles, Canyonlands, Utah... Using the extended life setting that the Vario offers, I was able to filter two gallons of PRE SETTLED river water before having to clean the ceramic.. Not many filters can handle the water that the Colorado River has to offer.. I purified plenty of crystal clear mountain water from Nolan Creek, Rocky Mountains, Colorado using the faster setting.. at two liters a minute, you cant beat it.. NO Pr

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter for hikers I got this filter because I was tired of planning hikes around clean water supplies. I took it with me on a recent over-night trip, and was very pleased. It filtered water from a nearby stream quickly, and the water tasted so good I thought I was drinking bottled water. No sediment, great taste, no slime, no after-taste. I filled 4 Nalgenes in a few minutes, and the filter fits nicely on the Nalgenes. How cool! This will go with me on all my trips from now on. It is light weight, and fits nicely in the side pocket of my pack for easy access. Thanks Moosejaw for the great deal on this filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Godsend Bought the filter to use on our church's annual backpacking trip for the guys in our youth group. Easily connected to my CamelBak 1 liter bottles. I used the filter twice a day to filter 10-12 liters each time for the guys. Whole process, filtering water, transferring to their bottle/ canteens, and reconnecting to my bottle took about 20 minutes. No one complained about taste, and these guys usually complain about everything. Only way I think the Vario could be improved is if it came with a hard case or at least a larger Nylon bag. All in all, money well spent, for a great product.
