Rated 4 out of 5 by from Can't to try the next generation. Right out of the box they were stiffer than any other running shoe I have worn, but I liked that cuz I knew that meant sturdy. The shoes to dirt, gravel, and just all around trail grip was out of this world. I've been using the Challengers now for some time. Loved those shoes too but did not feel the most safe as for they tend to slip a bit on the trails. So to find these Hoka racing shoes was awesome. The only thing that I could not stand and had to end up returning them for was the incredible heel lift. Every time I walked and ran in them it straight up felt like my heel was going to slip right out. Do wish the toe box would have been 2 or 3 ml bigger. Like the title I can't wait to give the next generation of these shoes a try.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too firm! I bought this shoe knowing that was rated as Hoka's least cushioning, "most responsive" shoe. However, the shoe is really lacking any kind of cushion in my opinion. I was expecting something like a Peregrine or Kinvara type responsiveness and cushioning but these felt like I was running on flip flop soles. I ended up taking Hoka up on their 30 day guarantee and returned these after a couple of runs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best Hoka's so far!!!! Thx guys! Digg'n my Speed Instincts...bought my daughter a pair and about to buy another pair. I love the lower profile and wider toe box. I have a pair of Speed Goats, also, and do they ever bite the trail. I think I like my Speed Instincts the best. Hoka's are the only trail shoes I will buy. Great job! A lot like Apple...always improving! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Liking this shoe! Started with the Clifton 3 coming from running in Asics for many years and then Saucony for a few years. I've had these shoes for a few weeks and have run about 6 times on light trails of 3-4 miles. They're light, responsive and with a nice amount of grip, and cushion. Wanting to get some longer runs in. Initially was concerned that they felt too narrow in the toe box, but once I wore them around and on some runs I felt comfortable in them. Overall liking these Speed Instinct 2's!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A great shoe with one fatal flaw for a supinator. SUMMARY: A great shoe with one fatal flaw (for me): The upper over the forefoot is made from an overly-stretchy material, allowing my foot to bulge out laterally over the edge of the midsole on off-camber terrain, resulting in instability and ankle rolling. The original Speed Instinct (SI-1), by contrast, with its TPU overlays, did not have this issue. ME: 5'7", 150 lbs., men's size 7.5. I do mostly technical terrain, including sections with 1000' vertical gain/mile. I'm a supinator, so I'm already too much on the outsides of my feet, and thus susceptible to ankle rolls. DETAILS: PROS: 1) Midsole has perfect level of cushioning for me for the descents. The balls of my feet get sore if I don't have enough cushioning, and the joint at the balls gets sore if there's too much. I didn't have either issue with this shoe. 2) Light-roughly the same wt. as the SI1. Here are my measurements; odd results (e.g., 8 SI-1 weighing more than 7.5) are likely due to production variation/QC issues: SIZE 7.5: SI-1, 9.1 oz; SI-2, 8.5 oz SIZE 8: SI-1, 8.8 oz; SI-2, 9.0 oz 3) Low drop. CONS: 1) Traction just OK. 2) Heel cup a bit low; needed to lace top eyelets to eliminate heel slip. 3) The midsole's soft forefoot, while overall great, causes it to lose some energy on the ascents. 4) The big issue: This shoe rolls big time, probably because of its upper material. I had this same issue with the Asics GEL-FujiLyte, which also resulted in unacceptable ankle rolls. The heel is also not that substantial, which may contribute to the rolling. Finally, even though the SI 1&2 are supposed to have the same midsole, I found the SI-2 significantly softer and thus more comfortable at the forefoot (compared new models of both). OTOH, the SI-2's softer forefoot might have contributed to its instability-when on off-camber terrain with my forefoot sliding to the outside, I could feel the SI-2's midsole compressing at the lateral edge, effectively adding an outward tilt underfoot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally a wide toe box! Well done , Hoka. A shoe with more room in the toe box. A home run, in my humble opinion. I'm happy to be able to finally join the Hoka family. Cheers!
