Rated 4 out of 5 by from Narrow, but Great I ran a few average trails around Provo, Utah and they held up fine. Then I went hiking with them for a mile in loose terrain and the shoes shredded like paper. I think these are great shoes when used on the road, single track(non-technical) and for long distances. Don't take them on any kind of traverse, because even though they will perform well, they will deteriorate VERY quickly and you will start losing lugs. All that being said, I see a use for these shoes and that's why I am buying them again. They are also definitely narrower than I'm used to(I'm a frequent Altra user).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Some Improvements But a Step Back The original Challenger ATR was a really good max trail shoe but needed some improvements. The tongue was too thin and the padding in the heel bed was too thin. Hoka listened to reviewers and fixed these deficiencies. The ATR 2 version has much more padding in the tongue and heel cup; however, it's obvious that to limit the weight gain, Hoka made the shoe more narrow. I put my ATR 1 against the ATR 2 and the ATR 2 is easily 3-4mm more narrow in the forefoot. I originally picked the Challenger because of the larger forefoot. Now it's too narrow and I'll have to switch long distance trail shoe brands. Come on Hoka, if you're going to make a popular shoe MORE narrow, then come out with a wide version like you did with the Bondi. I only check "recommend" for those with narrower feet.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disapointing I really wanted to love these but had to return them after a month. I have narrow feet and the heel in my right foot keeps slipping. I've tried multiple lacing techniques and just cannot get the fit right. I have to really crank the laces which puts a lot of pressure on the top of my foot. It also really squeezes the sides of my forefoot and there is no give in the added materials that are supposed to provide additional support compared with the previous version. I love the cushioning but the upper just isn't as comfortable as it could be.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Trail Runner I have ran in these about 200 mixed trail miles in dry conditions. I had to go up a half size just to accommodate the narrow toe box. In doing so the shoe became wider so I had to tighten the shoe just to increase side/lateral support. I never did feel true lateral support. These shoes do not cling to rocks too well on very aggressive trails but the rocker design works well for moderate terrain, rolling, and groomed mountain trails. They feel comfortable with orthotics and the cushion is sufficient. I would wear these for a 50-miler on rolling/moderate trails due to their good comfort. I did not like the rounded shoestrings it comes with, always kept coming untied. Why not use flat shoestrings or better yet bring back the Huaka!! That was the best trail shoe ever! I will say I had great customer service from Hoka.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Shoe I bought these to run a recent Spartan race in. I'm a heavier guy at 245lbs and the comfort from the ATR1's is what led me to buy these. They held up good in the mud, drained well after being submerged in water (not quite as good as the ATR1's) and the lugs gripped the muddy course better than I thought they would. The padded tongue is comfortable and is an improvement compared to the ATR1's. The shoes held up great when I got my momentum going downhill. My feet do not slide around in these shoes and I have no complaints about not having enough toe room or them being too tight. They also seem to be a little more supportive than the ATR1's. By no means am I an elite athlete, I'm just a guy trying to stay active in the most comfortable shoes I can find. Having said that, I highly recommend these shoes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this second pair I train on the trails of the Pacific Northwest. Lots of up and down on varied surfaces. Often wet. This is my second pair of ATRs and I really like them. I love the Hoka cushion and the soles seems to last a decent number of miles. The tread is adequate for all the conditions in which I run and the minimal drop is great. (The flash colors are pretty fun too. I have blue and yellow.) My only concerns are some early wear on the softer materials in the forefoot area and the laces are a bit to "slippery", requiring I lace the shoes fairly tight. I'm thinking of switching to the laces that came on my Valors or Bondis - thicker, softer, with more grip. Overall though, these shoes are making the many miles in the woods more enjoyable than ever. Thanks Hoka! Big fan.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost great- if tread did not fall off like a locust shell These shoes are VERY comfortable. They make running MUCH more fun. I only have 2 real problems, outside of their flimsy tongue. 1.) They are a good 1/2 inch too big. I run 13 solid in all shoes, and these have a good half inch extra on the toe. However this has not impeded my running or comfort. 2.) The biggest problem I've had is the tread literally falling off. I run a measly 1/2 mile a day about 5 days a week. I've run about 30-50 miles in these shoes on either a paved parking lot, or surfaced track. Within a short time, the tread was falling away from the sole. I used Gorilla glue to hold it on, and continue to patch as needed. I love the shoe, but the tread falling off so quickly is very very disappointing. I recommend the shoe, outside of this area of very poor quality. I would hope to buy more, but I need assured this will not happen in the future.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Two chances both fail Bought pair from Roadrunner that lasted maybe 40 miles and the EVA was flaking away with the outsole literally falling off. Returned the pair for refund. Decided to give it a second chance thinking maybe it was a defect. Bought a pair directly from Hoka and outsole fell off even quicker. Again, returned for refund. I have had a pair of Hoka's in my rotation each of the last four seasons. Never have I had this kind of problem. My Challenger from last year made it though many miles of training and finishes in two 50 milers. Not sure what changes were made but for the time being I'm out...
