Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ascending Mount Skala Ah, the Skala. What a fine blade. What a gooooood wife it would be! Before I wade into the blathering about the knife itself, a bit of background. After purchasing the knife (using the proceeds of a gift card I received for WRITING AN AMAZING AWARD-WINNING REVIEW OF ANOTHER PRODUCT) and entering the interminable "when is my stuff arriving" phase of life, I got to wondering: what does "Skala" mean? It wouldn't have shocked me if it meant nothing at all and those crafty Norwegian knife-smiths were all having a hearty, bearded chuckle at our dim-witted american expense. Or maybe it was Norwegian slang for a modified drift racing car (JDM, yo) or something? Only the internet could tell me. Turns out, Skala is the name of a mountain in Norway. Per Wikipedia (so it is true): "Skåla is a mountain in the municipality of Stryn in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway." Maybe I am a huge dork (I am), but when I read that sentence all I see is a map of Middle-Earth and orcs running around on a dark, craggy mountain. Wikipedia didn't mention what relationship this "Stryn" municipality has with Mordor (loose allies I would imagine), but it sound like ominous territory to me. Anyway, the Skala knife is almost certainly named after the mountain of the same name. Mystery solved. As for the knife itself? It is lovely. The handle is a rich, dark wood, the blade is very robust (and extremely polished, which seems a good blade quality), and it locks into place with total certainty. I can't say if the blade glows when an orc is near, but it was very sharp right out of the box and I am sure an orc could be dispatched with it if need be. Also, a nice quality leather sheath (with a metal button closure and a belt loop) is included. The belt loop is a nice touch, as this is definitely the sort of a knife that a rugged, capable sort would wear on their belt while clambering up the slopes of Mount Skåla or fishing for halibut in a fjord or skinning a fisher or whatever. In summation: the Skala is a great knife, and I love it and think you will too. It is most likely named after a mountain, which may or may not be located in Middle Earth.
