Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for snow mountaineering Whippets (you want two of them) are a really cool product for negotiating steep snow, regardless of whether your skis are on your feet, on your pack, or in your car. I have actually self-arrested on mine only once, but on countless occasions they have made my trip a lot less dangerous and nerve-wracking than it would have been without them. One of them also works great as a second tool in addition to an ice axe. I used mine for years and years, until I left them in a parking area that was too far away to go back and look for them. I instantly replaced them. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Life saving After many seasons using both the aluminum and carbon Whippets I've personally witnessed lives saved due to its use. As I seem to have to make every mistake before learning, my life is included in that list. My near miss came at the top of a couloir that is almost always rappelled. I foolishly tried to skip the upper rappel since the snow seemed skiable. I was almost to the second rap station when I made a pedal turn which scraped off all the neve snow to reveal blue ice. My uphill Whippet just happened to be pointed down by my hip and I landed right on it when my skis slid out from under me. With all my weight on it, the pick dug in and held. I somehow managed to stick it, mantling the Whippet handle with all I had. If my partner had not been there quickly with a rope I would not be here now. The Whippet saved my life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MUST HAVE for ski mountaineering! I Love this thing! I have used it a lot so far - it has revolutionized my ski mountaineering adventures. Memorable moment #1 - climbing Dragontail Couloir in Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park with my skis on my pack - I didn't have to take my pack off to grab my ice tool near the top when things got steep and front-pointing ensued - I just pushed the pick of my pole into the snow and it was all the security I needed to keep on going. Memorable Moment #2 - climbing the Fuhrer Finger on Mt. Rainier and skiing down the Upper Nisqually glacier into the Finger. It was nice to have the pick handy while I was skiing down through the glacier in case I lost control on some of the steep bits. This thing makes a great cane when skinning or climbing up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Usefulness and safety. I stopped crevasse falls with it. I first bought it for an Antarctica ski-mountaineering expedition, now it is my obvious choice for any glacier skiing or crossing. This is a great tool for glacier travel. It combines the usefulness of a ski pole and the safety of an ice axe. Just be careful going downhill... This is not for inbound skiing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hiking the CDT I am planning to hike the CDT and like having gear that has duel purpose. The carbon whippet is a hiking pole, tent pole, and self arrest. That's three purposes. Great. It collapses to a nice size to carry. Totally pleased. Thanks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The only Whippet I've Ever Used I've used BD Whippets since 2000 and I only ever have to get a new one when I lose one. I've never broken one (except the very tip of the ski pole on my oldest one). Light, strong, secure. I recommend it!
