DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super legit Looking forward to using this in the Alps this winter. I'll post a review upon return. Obviously won't be at the peak with this on...but I'll give it a shot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid This jacket has been the main piece of insulation in my system on a number of climbs in sub freezing temps. It is definitely too warm if you are working hard, but whenever you are at a standstill, for a belay or just a rest, the Cold Forge is a dependable piece of equipment against the cold. It is highly packable and extremely warm for a jacket that isn't full down. The Cold Forge performs well above expectation. This jacket even kept me going in an open bivy at 14,000 ft. with temps in the high teens. I would never recommend that situation, but I would recommend this jacket every time!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Part of the warmest layering stystem I've ever had I picked up this jacket last year and it kept me cozy on patrol this winter down past -30 when layered with a shell and a poly base layer. Great slim fit on a medium for layering in the middle. Fits an athletic body type. Only gets a four star because of the wrist to hood molting going on from dozens of micro tips. I just wish someone could come up with a more durable puffy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good jacket, changed from previous version I own the previous version, which had the diagonal looking baffles. I liked it so much I decided to add a second, my work gear often gets stored at a station and I wanted one for daily use. It's still a solid puffy but I noticed some differences that I wouldn't have changed. First is the fleecy collar, it's gone. Maybe that saves weight but that fleece wrapped around the neck and added significant comfort and extra warmth, I miss it with the new one. Second, I've compared it back and forth with the old one because I thought I was nuts at first, but the new one seems notably less filled and as a consequence less warm. This likely improves the packability and maybe there were complaints the old one went overboard but I loved how it was. Warmest puffy I've owned, and the new one is closer in warmth to the competitors. Lastly the cuffs are pretty loose, and I've seen other reviews around that note that so I don't think it's just mine. Build quality otherwise is still top notch, I still love the jacket and wore it with frequency until it warmed up. These changes I assume were intentional and others may enjoy them, but I honestly thought it was a great jacket as is. I'm 6'4", 220 and a bit lanky with bigger shoulders. Xl with BD sometimes works and sometimes it's too small. This jacket is a perfect fit all around including sleeve length and healthy amount of room for layers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid down jacket that fits nicely I'm a fan of this jacket. I got the green and it's a great color. Warmth is on par with comparable jackets by the usual competition; Artx, Pata, etc. Fit is way better than Pata down sweater, sleeves are a good length, not too tight or boxy in the chest/abdomin, hits around the middle of the butt or just above if you've got it cinched up. Only complain is the super comfortable cuffs are a tad too wide. Hood is designed well and insulated nicely. Fits as it should. I don't climb and I haven't worn it skiing, so I can't comment on comfort while wearing a helmet. For skiing, it would have to be very cold for me to rock this. Pockets on the inside are really nice. Most down jacket skip this...glad they included. Hand pockets are nice and soft. feels like it should. Not an ultralight piece nor too heavy. I'm 6'0" 165 lbs and the medium is good for me. Oh...only 4 stars because the wide cuffs annoy me...I'll have that altered. Easy fix but extra cost.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile wind, water, and cold protection. I purchased the 2015 version of the Cold Forge Hoody on closeout sale but as far as I can tell the primaloft gold insulation and shell material have not changed substantially. Spent the weekend in the cold desert and this layer was perfect for once the sun had gone down. Also utilized as rain protection in a substantial but short lived downpour. 10/10 would buy again. Zippers are solid, fleece lining feels nice against face and neck and when you put the hood up and zip er up all the way its very easy to get too warm. If this is a concern and you are looking for a parka to use during the fall and spring this may not be the best purchase. However if alpine ski tours and cold weather belays are in your future I would highly recommend this piece of insulation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nailed it. I bought a size Large, I am a lean/muscular figure (32" waist) 195cm 95kg (6'6", 210#), (lanky climber/runner figure). Fit was perfect. Bought this for skiing, climbing, and backpacking in Pennsylvania and New York and it has performed stunningly. Starting with my grievances... I generally don't prefer a hood, but maybe if they added a zip-up stow collar to roll the hood into, I could pull it out when I need it and roll it down when I don't. Also , I found if you turn the coat inside-out, you can stuff it inside either of its side pockets, adding a zipper to the inside edge would keep it from unfurling in my pack. Aside from the stuff above, this is one warm puffy, wore it backpacking down to -15°c (~5°f) and I was happy as a pig in it's own brand... There is little to no loss of mobility that I noticed while skiing, was hitting the double blacks here in Pa without issue (aside from the fact it's east coast skiing). Belaying was decent, nothing got caught or snagged. I do recommend pairing this coat with a shell, it's not super wind resistant, I use the BD Sharp End Shell, which fits perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Warm Cloud This jacket is like wearing a cloud. The soft fabric on the wrist, collar and deep pockets are such a nice touch. I never write reviews - but hot diggity - black diamond nailed it with this jacket! It feels like I wearing a cloud wrapped in crisp sun rays on a bed of feathers. I wear it around the house and out adventuring (Rock climbing, camping, and for cold nights on the fire line)... But this isnt a layers jacket - this is a hunker down by the fire in the cold jacket - the sun is setting and its about to get krispy jacket... My sleeping back isnt enough so ill wear this giant cloud jacket... my other puffy is to thin so ill throw this black magic over top and omg yes finally jacket.... your girl friend will steal this constantly jacket... BUT... take note.. Ive found my self biking or hiking in it - big mistake - super hot super fast. Now, Im not snow sport guy, and all my experince is all above ~30C.. so just a heads up this cloud might be a little to dense to be frolicking around. Again - Best, warmest, softest jacket ever. Super happy.
