The Black Diamond Men's Alpine Start Hoody is a softshell jacket for alpine climbs, early mornings, and light weather protection. The Schoeller® fabric is stretch woven with NanoSphere® technology, which means it stretches and follows your every move while still providing light weather resistance. A little wind up on the crag or a light rain as you're scrambling down to reach your car by sundown are quickly tossed to the side by this lightweight jacket. At only 8.8 ounces, it tucks right into the chest pocket when the weather is sunny and warm, allowing you to clip it to your harness for later. The helmet compatible hood is adjustable and always ready to keep moisture and wind off your neck and the precious hairs atop your head.

Products on Sale are Discontinued Styles or Colors.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great piece of protection When my Hoody arrived I thought the box was empty. This is one light shell. I purchased it for spring skiing, climbing and mountain biking. I have been impressed by its balance of wind resistance and how well it breathes. As for long term durability I cannot comment. The only reason for 4 stars is the sizing. I'm 5'9" with the torso of someone much taller. If I'd bought a medium like other reviews recommended I'd be in a half jacket. The large is on the verge of being to short for my liking. Other than that it's been an amazing jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Syzygy Like three celestial bodies lining up, this jacket is a rarel intersection of weight, size, and wind protection. I got it as a crag jacket, expecting it to take the edge off of slightly windy or chilly situations. The first trip I took it on yielded unexpected 50+mph winds and it came out of the pack immediately. The hood cinched down nicely and stayed out of my face despite violent gusts. It cut the wind way better than I expected and moved up on my gear list from comfort option to essential ptotection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Great Shell Bought this jacket after climbing with a guide buddy who wore one. Have had it for a year and a half, wearing it through at least 100 days of backcountry skiing and several mountain climbs. Even wore it for two weeks straight on trails, trains and in towns throughout northern Scotland. Don't know how many machine washings it's gone through, but it's still in good shape. I'm 5'8" and 160 lbs., a size medium fits well in the shoulders but the sleeves and hem are a bit long. I recently bought an Alpenglow Hoody in size small, this fits perfect. Would definitely recommend this jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must This beauty is an integral part of my winter setup. I wear it every single day I go outside. (Being a ski guide, this is almost every day...) It goes right after my base layers, just before my insulation. Throughout the day, I can remove as much layer as I need, I always have this perfect windproof softshell. I also wear it the rest of the year... A must.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High output jacket This jacket is light, tough and very breathable. I use it as a bike jacket and it breathes well enough on long climbs in high humidity to never feel damp. It repels light rain and tree branches alike

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The ticket I fell in love with schoeller fabric with Black Diamond's soft shell ski pants nearly 20 years ago. I've forgotten the name of the pant, but was is unforgettable were the pleats! As if one could go out on the town after a day in the hills. But I digress. This super thin layer of schoeller with the Alpine Start hoody stretches, breathes on the uptrack more efficiently than I do, and sheds wind and dry precipitation. It's a great piece just over a thin baselayer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from could be the best windshirt on the market I own several windshirts, but my Alpine Start is the one that gets the nod most often. Foremost it blends breathability (roughly 35 cfm) and water resistance (roughly a HH of 300) about perfectly. And while I have lighter windshirts, the Schoeller material is more robust and an advantage in rougher terrain. I like the athletic fit and adjustable hem and hood. I use a windshirt in all four seasons and the Alpine Start sees the majority of that use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Starter Jacket This jacket is incredible. I have worn it while out in a wide range of temperatures from 20ies up to the 60ies. Seriously the jacket ventilation is top of the line and it doesn't even have any vents. It is water resistant to a certain point but not a full rain coat but will still help to keep you dry even under exertion. This jacket is perfect for those early morning runs or some serious ski mountaineering.
