The Black Diamond Men's Alpine Start Hoody is a softshell jacket for alpine climbs, early mornings, and light weather protection. The Schoeller® fabric is stretch woven with NanoSphere® technology, which means it stretches and follows your every move while still providing light weather resistance. A little wind up on the crag or a light rain as you're scrambling down to reach your car by sundown are quickly tossed to the side by this lightweight jacket. At only 8.8 ounces, it tucks right into the chest pocket when the weather is sunny and warm, allowing you to clip it to your harness for later. The helmet compatible hood is adjustable and always ready to keep moisture and wind off your neck and the precious hairs atop your head.

Products on Sale are Discontinued Styles or Colors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great For The Price, Very Packable I have had this jacket over a year and used it on everything from summer climbing in the Tetons to spring skiing. Great backup layer to throw in the pack, and it hardly takes up any space. The hood fits over a helmet perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best soft shell for rock climbing I've had this jacket a few years now. Definitely 5 stars. Please BD, never stop making this jacket. I'll buy another one when mine is worn out. The best features of this jacket are absolutely its weight and packability. This makes it the best shell imaginable for rock climbing. I don't know of a lighter soft shell on the market. I love that it packs into its own pocket, a must if you ask me for climbing. It's way more durable than a nylon windshirt. The soft shell material will actually stand up to climbing. I almost always clip this on my harness for multi-pitch climbs. If the wind picks ups, throw it on. The hood works well over helmet. True, there are no hand pockets, but this is the price you pay to have such a light soft shell jacket. I'm OK with this. I've also worn this quite a bit ski touring. It won't replace a true shell in winter conditions, but it's way more breathable than a hard shell or even a heavy duty soft shell. It will shed some light precipitation on the way up but is breathable enough (most of the time) to keep it on when skinning. I've brought it as my only 'shell' in nice spring conditions as well to keep wind off me on ridges. My only minimal gripe is that the wrist cuffs are a little loose.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Windshirt and more Take-everywhere wind, snow, spits protection that works for climbers. Breathes way better than a Houdini, has a USABLE pocket, and a hood that fits over a helmet. Snow just slides off. Light rain is OK, but eventually it will get through. Decent wind protection considering the breathability. So far, unfazed by encounters with rock, tree branches, brush. Cactus spines will poke through (don't ask). Sizing is a bit tight. I'm 44"chest and L fits only base layers. I also have an XL, and that fits over anything I would want to wear while active. Excellent sleeve lengh in both sizes. I could use a larger hood, but then my climbing helmet is a large one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Butter Zone! This jacket has been in my quiver for a little over a year, and so far I have no complaints! It's so lightweight and packable that it's in my pack nearly every day, for work and commuting as well as hikes and bouldering at Lumpy Ridge. The abrasion resistance is impressive-there have been several occasions where I was certain I'd torn a sleeve and examined it to find not so much as a scuff. The trim is nice and athletic, which is perfect for my longer, leaner build. I'm 6'1", 180lbs and the Large size is perfect. Great as a standalone for cool mornings at the crag, and the stretch is great for layering over a synthetic midlayer hoody to provide extra wind and precip protection. This bomber hoody has everything I want, and nothing I don't! I also have to give BD props for their stealthy branding. I have the all black color and I love how the logos are low key. More companies should follow suit and refrain from using loud branding/logos. Another home run from Black Diamond!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite layer This is the second Alpine Start Hoody I have purchased due to becoming pregnant and temporarily growing out of my original. It is by far my favorite layer because it is lightweight, fast drying, packable and surprisingly warm. The material is somewhat stretchy but very tough and the fit is pretty slim. The new improved version has the zipper to the pocket on the outside of the coat where the old one had it on the inside. If it isn't a layer I am wearing to start a climb or provide extra warmth on a cold day, it is always thrown into my pack for added warmth on the descent or when the sun goes down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect ultralight rain/wind jacket Perfect fit, great fabric, super packable in its own pocket. I really love this jacket! I haven't had a chance to test it in hard rain (although I don't think that's really what it's for), but it's great for that unexpected light drizzle at the crag or three pitches up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A must own Love this piece. Breathes so well, I've worn it in summer showers that cleared up into a hot day, and I forgot I had it on. I don't take roadtrips without it. Packs so well, there's no reason not to. Also works well as a light windbreaker. My only complaint is no side pockets. I get that they would add to the overall size when packing it down, but I constantly find myself trying to put my hands in pockets that aren't there, even after months of wearing it. With pockets, it'd be perfect and an easy 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super light! Very light jacket, --the heaviest part is the zip!!-- but at the same time a very good barrier for wind and light rain. Ideal layer for alpine technical climbing.
