The Black Diamond Men's Alpine Start Hoody is a softshell jacket for alpine climbs, early mornings, and light weather protection. The Schoeller® fabric is stretch woven with NanoSphere® technology, which means it stretches and follows your every move while still providing light weather resistance. A little wind up on the crag or a light rain as you're scrambling down to reach your car by sundown are quickly tossed to the side by this lightweight jacket. At only 8.8 ounces, it tucks right into the chest pocket when the weather is sunny and warm, allowing you to clip it to your harness for later. The helmet compatible hood is adjustable and always ready to keep moisture and wind off your neck and the precious hairs atop your head.

Products on Sale are Discontinued Styles or Colors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect ultralight rain/wind jacket Perfect fit, great fabric, super packable in its own pocket. I really love this jacket! I haven't had a chance to test it in hard rain (although I don't think that's really what it's for), but it's great for that unexpected light drizzle at the crag or three pitches up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A must own Love this piece. Breathes so well, I've worn it in summer showers that cleared up into a hot day, and I forgot I had it on. I don't take roadtrips without it. Packs so well, there's no reason not to. Also works well as a light windbreaker. My only complaint is no side pockets. I get that they would add to the overall size when packing it down, but I constantly find myself trying to put my hands in pockets that aren't there, even after months of wearing it. With pockets, it'd be perfect and an easy 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super light! Very light jacket, --the heaviest part is the zip!!-- but at the same time a very good barrier for wind and light rain. Ideal layer for alpine technical climbing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this product! Perfect balance between weight and features, for climbing I love that o can clip it on my harness and forget about it, then pull it out like I did this month at the top of a peak in a thunderstorm:)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent fabric, adequate fit I bought the jacket a couple of years ago, and I'm so happy with it, that I decided to leave a review :) I mostly use the jacket while hiking, but have also used it for backcountry skiing and running in winter (in Denmark, so temperatures between 5 and -5 °C (41 to 23 °F)). It's a near perfect supplement to the hardshell: Light, wind-resistant and quite breathable. if you use it for running, simply tug the hood down your back, as it will otherwise be annoying. The fabric is amazing! It sheds water like a charm, although the DWR treatment wears off, especially where there contact with a backpacks straps over the shoulders. It helps to wash it and tumble-dry it though (use mild detergent, like Grangers, and low heat for tumbling). It works really well while hiking in the mountains with a single or double baselayer. I prefer a long sleeved wool baselayer with big masks/net like structure (like the Devold Wool Mesh), possible with a regular merino T-shirt over that (short sleeve). While the fit is generally great, I think of a couple of minor improvements: - The elastic cuffs could be tighter, perhaps even adjustable, though that would add weight. Currently I have two small loops of elastic thread with tighteners in the check pocket, in order to close off the cuffs when it's cold and windy – like in coastal areas. - The hood could have a cord to tighten it from behind, making it more useful when biking and in very windy conditions (I think the added weight would be worth it) - It have an annoying tendency to make a "bump" just above the groin area... after looking at it for some time, it's obvious that it's just excess fabric somehow, but it is a bit awkward at times.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect Lightweight layer I bought this to climb Mount Rainier in July and it was the perfect layer. It was warm outside and when moving but the wind was blowing so this was the perfect layer to protect me against the wind but not get me to hot. The hood fit nicely over my helmet and was great in my layering system. 4 stars because I am 6'4" and wish it was a tad longer on waist but not a big deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wear it for everything. This jacket is one of my favorite pieces in my gear locker. This jacket has essentially replaced my Gortex shell for most of my endevours. I can wear it over a t-shirt for the summer mornings when its just slightly cool. I can wear it over a breathable insulation piece to make it wind proof and highly water resistent(I dont really do long rain showers being in Southern California). I wear it for work, I wear it for play. In fact I'm wearing it as I type this review, sitting at my desk with a t-shirt on in the cold A/C(not everythign is extreme) and I feel extremely comfortable. The material is very quiet and doest have that normal Gortex swishing annoyance. I can also attest to the material durability as well, because this is my second jacket. The first one was damaged 1 week after getting it, however, it held up extremely well to what happened. Long story short, I ended up sliding across the concrete bike path on my back/side for approximately 15-20ft while traveling about 20mph. The jacket was abraded and a couple small holes on the arm, but I totally repaired it with some patches and that is the one I use for when I'm at work doing rope access or other stuff. If the temp is south of 73 degrees you can bet your money I have this jacket on. If I had to list something negative about the jacket, I guess...sometimes I do go to put something in my pocket and there arent normal hand pockets, but that goes with the territory and would just add bulk to the piece. So. There you go.
