Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unbearable high pitch whine I boxed the new one back up and it sits on my shelf. Ended up using gorilla tape and zip-ties to get my original Icon back in commission. The new light has many great features don't get me wrong. It's bright lasts forever. Sweet color array and so many modes you could probably make a landing strip if you wanted. But the flaw I simply could not get over was the incredibly high pitch whine that it makes when on. I really hope this issue is addressed for the next version. I own several black diamond headlamps and they are all superb. Until then I shall only use this when absolutely needed and use my first Icon, which I will add has been used daily for over 6 years. Love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeds all Expectations I purchased this lamp two or three years ago for my general use light and to use in search and rescue with the fire department that I work for. I have a bad tendency to neglect my equipment and this light spent a few months tied to a tree between camping visits, when I found the light I replaced the batteries and never looked back. I recently requested some replacement parts for my light and was treated like a king throughout the process. If I ever do find a way to break this lamp I will buy another Icon the next day. The performance of the light is also amazing but anyone who halfway does their home work before they buy knows that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They should call it "The Beast" I am an ultra-runner and I live way up north where I spend many mornings or nights running in complete winter darkness. For years I have lamented my not powerful enough headlamps. Finally I broke down and bought the Icon. Oh why didn't I do that sooner!? This puppy lights things up big time. I can see very far ahead of me, and the light also disperses in a bit of a gradient around the edges so I get good foot placement lighting at the same time (no tunnel vision). Other lamps I've used I either have had a tunnel beam or a too dispersed blurry light. This rocks the sweet spot of distance plus ground lighting. As far as it being bigger than other lamps, I haven't noticed the extra weight or been bothered by it. When I put it on I think, dang this is big. But about eight seconds later I don't notice it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect all around headlamp Second icon headlamp. So impressed with the first one I got a backup. I don't see red at all so use the high/ low option the most. For general trail walking the low powered 2 LED light is perfect. I use the high beam when in new country because you can search ahead and pick out a good route. The one recommendation I would like to see is the ability to replace the head strap at some point. Great product and two friends just bought one and love them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid light, worth the extra weight I first started using this headlamp for night SAR missions, and it performs beautifully. I recently started taking it on glacier climbs, and really appreciating the extra power for blazing the way through the inky dark of a moonless alpine start. The "task" light setting is wonderful for close work or simply around camp. Owning rechargeable AA's and a quality charger is a must though; I fully recharge the batteries after every use, and have never had any issues. Great light, no regrets!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best all around headlamp on the market I've used the Icon for over 10 years, 1st & 2nd gen. and it has been and still is the best all around use headlamp on the market. I've owned many brands & models, the Icon still out guns the others. The brightest, most adaptable, dimming, strobe, locking, easy to find in my dark pack, comfortable, waterproof and it uses AA batteries which are the cheapest to purchase. It is a little big but it doesn't bother me, for lighter duty I also use the BD revolt head lamp, but if I'm only taking one I'll grab the Icon every time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent. Bright, Efficient, and Durable Excellent product. The best headlamp I have owned and yet not the most expensive. Little bit pricier than most, but in this case you get what you pay for. Packed with features. Multiple light settings that, once learned, really allow the user to fine tune for the perfect amount of light. Spot light is super bright and the flood throws a lot of light out. The red light is one of the most functional that I have used. All three light settings are easily dimmed. This is also the first lamp I have owned with the off/lock feature which is awesome for stowing in a pack. The Icon is also seriously durable. Rain, snow, ice, still works. Guiding 50 day canoe/mountaineering trips in SE Alaska, my Icon got rained or snowed on everyday no issues. Even falling ice while climbing couldn't stop it. Added bonus, battery life is exception. Even when they start to wear out and the light dims, the icon is still brighter then everyone else's lamps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything I could ask for I just hiked All through the night on a SAR call. Got back to the truck at 6 am. It rained and snowed on us all night. I figured I would need to change the batteries at least once since it had a few hours on it already but it stayed on bright mode the hole way. Not a single problem. So much brighter than a small AAA powered light, worth the weight on your head. I loaded it with Lithium AA which also helped with weight.

What kind of batteries does this headlamp take? Are they 4 AA batteries or are they lithium polymer? In the video they are clearly using duracell batteries.

Asked by: Ken56
Hiya Ken56, thanks for your question! This headlamp uses 4 AA batteries. Sorry for the confusion!
