The Cobra Ice Tool by Black Diamond is a staple of hard ice leads and bold alpine routes. This year we've redesigned the shape of our legendary Cobra's lightweight carbon fiber shaft to give it the most clearance of any of our tools without sacrificing balance or axis of rotation. The new silhouette also reduces the overall weight of the Cobra by over 100 grams. The carbon fiber shaft keeps the majority of the tool's weight in the head. Carbon fiber also provides vibration-free placements with minimal flex, a damp, balanced swing and wrist-flick sticks. Over-molded and textured, a new, minimized rubber grip is integral to the Cobra's lower shaft for a flush fit, positive control and a secure, precise grip. The optional integrated Android Leash can be added for hard ice climbing. Comes equipped with Laser Pick, removable Fang and Strike. Patented.

FEATURES of the Black Diamond Cobra Ice Tool

  • Lightweight, high-clearance carbon fiber shaft
  • Balanced with weight in head for damp, accurate strikes
  • Laser Pick, Cobra Strike and Fang included, modular head design
  • Shaft CEN-T certified, patented
  • Pick is CEN-B

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cobras Carbon. Mmmmmm.... Nothing absorbs vibration, is as "smooth," and all-around bomber strong as Carbon cobras. I put hundreds of high-abuse pitches on mine every year, ranging from WI easy to WI really hard spray and mixed routes, and never even think about these tools, they just work. I've climbed M11 on 'em, alpine routes, just the best all-around technical tool going. In picked-out warm ice any tool will work OK, but get on something with fresh ice up high in the mountains and advantages of having the best possible tool are apparent really fast. Note--I am biased as I worked on the design of these tools, but I helped make them so they work well! Will Gadd

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tools for leashless climbing in alpine environments. I've used these on a few technical climbs on cascade volcanoes so far. I love being able to use them leashless: after I bought these I promptly made my own umbilicals, and I couldn't be happier. They climb neve and ice very well, and they even plunge very well. I haven't had the chance to try out a pair of the Nomics (which seem to be about the only competition for the Cobra), so I really can't make a fair comparison in that sense.,,,,The one, very minor annoyance I have noticed is that while climbing some neve on the NFNWR of Adams, the tools were a bit sticky when trying to remove placements.. Nothing a little filing couldn't fix.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My tools of choice I have three sets of ice tools -- the Cobras, 2014 Vipers, and a set of Fuels. The Cobras are my go-to tool. They swing so well. The balance and weight just feel great in my hands. The carbon fiber shaft dampens impact more than the aluminum shaft of the Vipers. By swapping out leashes, picks, hammers and adze, and the strike and fang, I can customize these tools for the climbing goal of the day, whether that's dry tooling, mixed climbing, technical alpine, or blue water ice. They're fantastic! Of course, no tool is perfect. So, I need to also make suggestions for improvement. The grip is perhaps a slight bit small for my hands. So, BD, if you can make the grip size more customizable, that would be a good next step in tool evolution. The grip is the user-tool interface, and the more seamless that interface, the better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sexy, Light, and it Sticks! These tools are amazing. Designed to be used both leashed or leashless, they offer amazing versatility and stunning performance. The pick has a solid design, and will happily stick plastic water ice and hard alpine ice with equal ease. The carbon fiber shafts transmit little to no shock through the tool, which I consider a positive, although some people dislike this feature.,,,,The fang grip is great for leashless climbing, although I'd recommend picking up the BD spinner leash as if you're planning on lots of leashless climbing. Nothing would be worse than losing a tool while many pitches up a waterfall.,,,,Plus, they look awesome!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply the best The best. The gold standard. Unbeatable. I've climbed tens of thousands of feet with my set of Cobras: water ice to big alpine routes in the Karakorum. Really, they are the best at just about everything. You could buy a specialized tool for drytooling or mixed, but for an all around tool that's strong, light, beautifully crafted and a reliable workhorse, this is it. Really.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love em... I have been ice climbing since just before the days of the McInnes/Peck Terrordactyls (which makes me a mature dude with a few miles of ice under my belt). I borrowed a set of these from a fellow guide and ice climbing guidebook author when teaching a course a while back. Wow! I immediately loved them and wondered why I had not tried them before. I have tried a lot of tools brought to classes by a lot of students but these Cobras made my eyes water. Nice balance that matched my swing perfectly. Light, not cold on the hands and good sticks. Easy to hang on to with good clearance over bulges. If you're looking for a solid, light, reliable tool that really works, do yourself a favor and try these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best ice/alpine tool To put is simply they are the best all around tool out there. I have used several generations of tools (yes I started with Simond Chacal/Barracuda combo), and these tools are the best all around tool I have used. They are incredible for pure ice and/or alpine. I climbed to M7 mixed as well. They are very well balanced, and swing really well. If you climb mostly overhanging bolted rock, probably you'd be better off with a different tool, but I have used these on Stanley Glacier Headwall mixed route, and they performed really well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Ice Tools Great Balance I have had my Cobras for 14 years. I have used them in Alaska, Colorado, Canmore and Wyoming. They have very good balance which makes it easy to be precise and stick your picks. I am not a good rock climber, but between these tools and Jeff Lowe's Ice Climbing instructions I have climbed WI 5 routes and glaciers. I used the Petzl Trigrest for Sum'tec to add pinky rests. Also, Thanks BD for bringing your gear production back to the USA. I feel safer buying camalots, again.
