Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for day touring I bought this in December and skied with it for a season in Japan. I was mostly touring and guiding at resorts or in the backcountry. For general ski touring this is the best pack I've used. It's light without being flimsy, fits everything I need for a day skiing with customers, it's convenient to use, and it carries well. If I go ski mountaineering on my own it's just big enough, but it's not big enough for ski mountaineering with customers, so I'm going to buy the bigger size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good mix of features and layout I really like the blend of features for this pack, balancing some nice ski features while keeping the weight close to that of a pack for alpinism. It isn't as light as a dedicated alpinist pack, that is for sure. I have other packs which are your typical super-stripped down packs for minimalist alpine climbs, but those carry skis poorly, or not at all. (packs like BDs Blitz 28) Likewise I don't think I would like this pack for carrying a heavy pair of alpine or freeride skis/bindings with alpine or heavy AT boots attached. Maybe if it was stuffed full, it would carry them okay, but at that point the weight would probably exceed the suspensions design. Also, it doesn't have the airbag feature, something very ski-specific. I think that just like the Helio series skis, this pack is a great backcountry all-around performer; it works for the majority of 1 night backcountry skiing/touring/mountaineering or ski-accessed climbing objectives. This is particularly true when wearing boots which work car-to-car across the skiing and climbing spectrum. This pack carries skis exceptionally well when you don't have to have boots attached or in the pack. The pockets are all well thought out. Yes, the exterior flap pocket is small. I know everyone has their own loading system, but I really like everything inside except for a map/gps, water, and snacks (and climbing gear if applicable). I keep my water (16oz size) clipped to the gear loop, the snack in the waist pocket, and the map/gps in the flap pocket. Works perfectly for me. If it isn't one of those 3 (or other climbing gear), then it really doesn't need to be out anyways. If you are on the cutting edge of alpinism, whether accessed by skis or not, this pack is probably too heavy; or if you are riding serious big mountain avalanche terrain you probably want an airbag pack. However, For an average recreational user I think this pack is a great choice and will cover all your 1 night needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great backcountry pack! There are a lot of positives for this pack, and no negatives I've found yet. I love the separated compartment for your snow safety tools. It's perfect for a probe, shovel and skins and still leaves what feels like a ton of room in the main compartment for everything I need for a long day tour, plus more. The pack carries very well and feels a lot like a good traditional climbing pack. I have even used this pack on a canyoneering mission and it carried 30+ pounds of climbing gear very well including a rope on top of the pack. This pack is multi-functional and will use it as ski touring pack, light ski mountaineering pack, and big day climbing pack. Would recommend to anyone. In regards to the reviewer who said the closure system seems to freeze up, I will say that I use this pack in Tahoe where the temps are generally more mild, so I can't speak to how well it would perform in somewhere much colder.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great Idea, Poor Execution Bought this thing last fall as a work day pack. I was really excited about the design as I've been wanting a simple pack with a separate avy tools pocket and a drawstring closure. The first one I received had the sternum strap mounted backwards (facing out). I took it in to the warranty dept here in Salt Lake and they got another one sent out to me ASAP, which was great. I really wanted to like this pack, but I couldn't get past a few of the major design flaws: 1. I was expecting it to be a lightweight ski mountaineering (not skimo) pack. With the avalung attachment, helmet attachment, multiple zippered pockets, beefy back panel, and swing arm suspension, this pack weighs more than several of my 70+ liter packs. I think there are at least 7 layers of fabric between the back panel and the exterior of the pack. Even with lightweight materials, that stuff adds up. Why do you need an avalung on this thing? Does anybody even use those anymore? If you're using it as a ski mountaineering pack, you shouldn't be worried about getting buried. The swing arm suspension is just a heavy gimmick that provides no real benefit if the pack fits well (which it doesn't). Plus the shoulder harness adjustment straps have a bartack sewed into them limiting how loose you can make them. DUMB. 2. The main closure system effectively makes the upper zippered pocket unusable. Why would I want to smash that pocket down with the rope strap? I leave this pocket empty all the time now. 3. On days when its snowing and warm (>30*) the fabric wets through almost immediately, getting the gear inside wet. It would be nice if my extra layers stayed dry on snowy days. 4. Anytime it snows and is cold (which is often), the drawcord closure ices up and I have to use the zipper access to get to the main compartment. It wouldn't be a big deal except I CANT GET TO MY AVALANCHE TOOLS when this happens. Deal breaker. 5. It just doesn't fit me. I tried both sizes and went with the one that seemed to work best but I haven't really been able to make it comfortable. Maybe if I had a little more adjustment with the shoulder straps... The idea behind this pack is a great one. If BD simplified it and stripped it down, I could see purchasing another one for limited use. I love BD's rock and ice pro but have had a lot of problems with their soft goods. This thing is not for me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from backpack review I bought this backpack for day tours and I really like the size. It fits all the necessary gear for day tours: safety gear, water, food and extra clothes. The backpack is very comfy, I really like the SwingArm technology. The side zip makes it possible to access your water bottle without having to take off your back pack which is good. The hip belt pocket is great for storing small snacks or a headlamp. The stowable helmet carriage is a great place to put your jacket when it's warm out. For more negative points, the A frame ski carry straps barely fit my skis. I understand I have quite fat skis (120mm underfoot with Salomon Guardians) but I think this should not have been an issue. The straps are so tight that they cannot go over part of my heelpiece which results in the skis being unbalanced. The bottom straps should be adjustable or larger. The sinch closure system does not feel right. You cannot open up to see whats in your pack very good because it is attached to the top pocket. Same goes for when you close the pack it never seems to be closed completely. Since the top pocket is attached to the sinch closure system, there is not much room to put stuff in there. The idea is good but i would suggest seperating the top pocket and the sinch closure system, more room for top pocket and easier access for gear inside the pack. This backpack is allright, but there are definetly some adjustements that can be made.
