Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite winter gear I don't ski, but I'm climbing up something steep in the Cascades in my snow shoes or crampons every weekend. On those trips there are times when the climb isn't steep enough that an ice ax works well, but the conditions are such that a fall might lead to an "overly-exciting mountaineering experience". At those times having a whippet in your hand is really awesome. Another huge advantage is that if you do slip, the whippet is already in your hand in the self-arrest position. It works when you need it. The other cool thing is that my carbon whippet immediately inspires gear envy in other climbers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tool for BC missions I'd purchased the carbon for splitboarding because it breaks down more than the original version. I now bring it along for icy BC ski descents too. Great upgrade from the original BD.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for my winter hiking too! I don't back country ski but I hike regularly in the White Mountains of NH. About a year ago I saw someone on the trail with a whippet and decided to buy one and give it a try. After one winter of use I can say that I rarely used the ice axe (carry it less and use it only rarely). While not its intended use I have found it useful in stabilizing myself by hooking small trees/branches/rocks if used cautiously when climbing or descending. (BD lawyers have angina here). Haven't needed it for self arrest (its intended use) but like the fact it is in my hand all the time unlike the ice axe. If looking at photo don't get excited. Somehow the whippet was held backwards for the photo. I don't hike with it this way. :-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from my new go-to second tool On our recent climb of the East Ridge of Mt. Logan in Yukon, my Whippet became my go-to second tool. On big glacier terrain I usually climb with a ski pole in hand to occasionally test snow bridges. Experience has shown me that if I can probe with a ski pole basket and not go through, I can usually walk across without breaking through. On a whim I brought my Whippet on Logan (I usually only use it steep skiing as a backup for that occasional consequential screw-up). I ended up using the Whippet for most of the alpine ice as well as endless steep snow walls we encountered and put my actual north wall on my pack. The carbon version is lighter to save energy for long days, especially at high altitudes. I'm very glad this is available as a three-piece as it makes packing and traveling so much easier. The new carbon Whippet is an excellent example of great R & D by, in my opinion, the best gear manufacturer on the planet--Black Diamond. Keep up the great work, guys!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New and Improved year-round tool for alpinists I'd modded my original Flicklock Whippets to work as 3-section "expedition" poles as soon as they came out years ago— and have replaced the lower pole-sections 5x in the process. I had always been concerned about the plastic flicklocks— carrying (and using) spares and always loosening the clamp-screws when not using them, which isn't too often because I use the Whippets year-round. Now there's no reason to worry about the flicklocks because they're made of steel!! The ski-poles' swing-weight is similar to the 3-section "expedition" pole set-up I'm used to that shortens to 80cm. The new Whippet pole can be packed, and more importantly used, at 70cm— the classic piolet length for general mountaineering. The design of the new pick, head/handle and streamlined strap is superbly refined. The longer pick no longer rattles or vibrates when firmly planting the poles while skiing in hard conditions or ascending slopes using piolet canne, ramasse or ancre. The riveted polycarbonate head reminds me of fine cutlery and is now permanently attached to the upper shaft/handle— which is just as well because I never removed my old-style Whippets from their handles in almost 15 years of use. The new strap is less bulky (I never had a problem with the traditional design, though). Where I work and play (when not skiing) at and above tree-line is steep and hummocky grass and moss-embedded loose rock blocks, and I use french-technique constantly to move with security using the Whippets in tandem. When using the Whippets in tandem as a piolet, I use a fifi-hook and a small loop made of bungee-cord joined by a length of 2~3mm kevlar to hold the poles together. The fifi-hook keeps the points together; the cord wraps around the picks, and the bungee-cord stretches over the canard-wings to securely lock the heads together. My poor 60~70cm piolets get left at home and don't go to the mountains anymore… boohoo!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It gets the job done. Way better than putting a basket on your ice-axe. Just be careful with the post-run fist-bump. Seriously, though, it's great, and the three-section version gets pretty small for traveling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mission critical gear It's hard to imagine ski mountaineering without Whippets. I just used the new Carbon Whippets on Mt. Adams and Mt. Shasta. Lightweight and solid. The 3-section design makes them very compact when traveling. Good to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Self arrest Update to my previous review, I slipped getting up out of a glassing position last week. I was just under 11k sitting on a ledge. Stood up after glassing and shooting pics of some solid Ovis few several hour I lost my footing thankfully I used the Whippet to get up so it was in my hand. It stopped me with in 10ft with my pack on. It then helped me get back up to my tripod and scope. I will definitely be caring this when the season open!
