Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid & Dependable The ATC-XP is an excellent belay device that is particularly good for frequent users. Unlike the grigri or other belay devices that use assisted braking, the ATC-XP is beginner-friendly. It enforces good belay technique and the friction mode facilitates ease of use for smaller belayers. The friction mode also helps to prolong the life of the device. From a programmatic standpoint, the XP could use a few more color choices to improve color-based equipment tracking. It would also be awesome if Black Diamond made an XP out of steel, instead of aluminum, although I realize that that does not match the majority of the market. However, for educational and industrial usage, in which weight is not a concern, but durability and longevity is, a steel ATC would be a game changer. The increased durability and the reasonable price tag are why my outdoor education company is switching to the XP as our preferred belay device, and I recommend it to anyone looking for the next step in their belay/rappel devices.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth yet grippy. Rope moves thru easily yet when braking the "teeth" give just a bit of extra tension. Love it. Highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Atc Works just as great as you'd expect an ATC from black diamond to work. the extra friction ridges give me more confidence when braking and it's super light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Half Rope Concerned with Glacial Climbing using Half Rope and this Provides Enough Friction for Safety

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has a tighter hold on rope than others. Makes lowering jumpy until you get used to it. Never have to worry about dropping anyone though, it's got too much friction for that

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Work Horse I am a part time belayer at my local community center climbing wall. I've used this ATC for a few months now, 4 hours at a stretch a couple days a week and my hands are huge fans. The teeth add traction to the rope so I don't have to squeeze nearly as hard. This is great for me because I can sneak more pitches in myself, and my hands don't hurt the day after at my main gig (I'm also a chiropractor). I've got a second unit in my Search and Rescue bag, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great belay device I do quite a bit of canyoneering and I have come to like this device more and more. It does well adding sufficient friction when running through the teeth and if I need less I can run the rope through the opposite end for less friction. I like to travel light when backpacking and that is another plus with this device.
