The BearVault Model BV 500 Food Canister is a large container for keeping your food out of the bear's hands. Bigger in size than the 450, this polycarbonate cylinder secures a 7 day food capacity. Fill it up with all your yummy favorites, close up the lid and it will just become a little toy for the local grizzly or black bear to bat around on the ground. I'm sure it will get discouraged and amble off eventually. The bear, not the canister. Once it's safe, grab your stash and have yourself a meal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Peace of mind Used this for two trips so far. Loved it! Easy to pack and liked the clear sides so we could see where items were located when we wanted to eat. Did not need to worry about critters chewing through our pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BYOBV! In planning a recent trip to the North Cascades in Washington State, I discovered that Bear Vaults are required in many locations. Typically, I just hang my pack from a tree or cable (when available) but that was not an option on this trip. With some hiking segments reaching five to six days on the trail, I purchased the BearVault BV 500 Food Canister. I use an Osprey Atmos 65 liter backpack, and, at first I was a little grumpy about the rather tight fit of the BV 500 inside. It is indeed a snug fit in that pack, but once I figured out the best way to insert and extract it, not a big deal. The BV 500 easily accommodated meals and snacks for five to six days. I did see a bear on this trip, but he was too busy eating blueberries to be concerned with seeking out my campsite and testing the Bear Vault. One segment of the trip was spending a couple of nights on Sahale Glacier. It is quite beautiful, and I saw a good bit of wildlife on the trek up. But up higher the landscape is pure rock (and glacial melt). I didn't expect to see mice up there, but there they were...and quite aggressive when food was out. To keep them out of the camp at night, I placed my Bear Vault about 50 feet away (no trees up there), and it worked like a charm. The mice busied themselves with it all night. Also, I don't hike with any kind of camping chair, and didn't think about using the BV 500 as a seat until I saw a picture of that use on the box. Just having a place to sit that is high and dry is a wonderful luxury while camping, and the BV 500 worked well for that function too. I had another unanticipated use for the Vault also. Unfortunately, I took a tumble while trying to ford a rocky stream and got pretty well soaked. When I changed clothes, I didn't want to place my wet clothes back in my pack, nor in the dry bag that held the rest of my clothing. Thankfully there was room in the BV 500 to isolate my wet clothing along with my food, until I reached a place to dry the clothing out. I was thankful to have that flexibility. In some locations, it made sense to only hang my food from a nearby tree, and that can be accommodated with the BV 500 as well. It is molded with strap recesses in the container body. I used a simple nylon strap and paracord to hoist it up over a branch...safe and sound in the morning. All in all, I came to terms with carrying a Bear Vault on this trip and highly recommend the BV 500 as an excellent choice for this increasingly REQUIRED piece of equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as expected! Used this for a 4 day/3 night trip and it worked like a charm. It is big and bulky (can't change that) but it fit all of our food in well. If you have a big pack you can easily fit it in, or else you'd need the smaller version of this. Some people have complained about the lid opening mechanism being hard, but after you do it a few times you'll see it is really easy. The place we backpacked required canisters and unless you want to shell out $300 for the fancy ultralight ones, this one is the way to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality Bought this for my upcoming backpacking trips through the Eastern Sierras. I had heard great reviews and can say I am impressed thus far. Only way a bear can get in is if he smashes the entire thing, but that goes for any food container.
