The reason that I love Arc'teryx jackets, apart from their flawless construction and seemingly endless list of technical features, is that they give me the option of doing some extreme alpine excursions. Here's the thing about me, I probably won't do any alpine mountaineering, but I love having options. The Arc'teryx Men's Alpha SV Jacket, designed for severe conditions, opens up those options. The GORE-TEX® Pro fabric shell is fully waterproof (with WaterTight™ zippers all around) while remaining breathable, lightweight and durable enough to function perfectly under a harness. Pit-zips allow you to further regulate ventilation and temperature. While bred for mountain tops, the Alpha SV won't judge you if its primary usage is day to day comfort and protection.

FEATURES of the Arcteryx Men's Alpha SV Jacket

  • Made with hard wearing N80p-X GORE-TEX® face fabric engineered to shed water, snow and resist abrasion while staying soft and quiet compared to other shell materials
  • Athletic e3D patterning provides room for three layers while facilitating movement
  • Helmet-compatible StormHood rotates without blocking vision and is designed to provide the ultimate protection in cold or wet weather
  • WaterTight pit zippers permit rapid ventilation
  • Two large bellowed chest pockets, perfectly placed to fit above your pack or harness, two internal laminated pockets and one sleeve pocket
  • Hem drawcord and HemLock removable inserts prevent jacket from slipping out from underneath harness. Insert can be removed when not needed
  • Micro-seam allowance (1.6 mm) reduces bulk and weight
  • Fully seam-sealed for waterproofness
  • One-hand adjustable drawcords make your life easier
  • Articulated patterning and no-lift gusseted underarms for unrestricted mobility
  • Laminated die-cut Velcro® cuff adjusters with elastic
  • Corded zipper-pulls reduce noise and are easy to grab

DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best jacket I have ever owned. Colors not true to website product photos. Best jacket out there in terms of construction and materials arm length is kind of on the long side as Arcteryx made this for the lanky climber type and having to reach above your head all day. The colors are not very true to what is presented in the product photos the Cayenne color is much closer to Coast Guard Orange that you would expect to be painted on a USCG helicopter or on one of those old school yoke style life jackets. Cayenne is great for visibility during rescue operations, but expect your friends to shun you a bit when you wear it around town at all (or at the very least always wear sunglasses while you are wearing it).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Probably the best I have had a theta ar for the last ten years. I upgraded to the Alpha SV this summer in preparation for this fall. While some six footers say go with a medium, the large fits me (at 5' 11") well. For comparison, the Venta MX large is a tighter fit, and a Gamma MX large fits looser.,,,,The jacket's design seems to wrap you when it put on. It's a very articulated fit that really works. I think the minimal experience I have with this jacket already tells me how well it is going to work. Extremely pricey, I know. But if you are looking for something at this level, the Alpha SV is the pinnacle.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it! This is a great jacket. I used it on the PCT, AT, and durring my two weeks in yellowstone and I can not find a single thing I don't like about it other than the price - hence the 4 stars (value counts too!) As far as performance goes, it's what you should expect when buying an arc' teryx product. Many of their products are considered the best in their field, this jacket being one of them. I have read other reviews on other sites about people having issues with leaks in the shoulders but I can say certainly from my experiences with it that this was not the case. Kept me warm and dry through some pretty serve storms. I love it so much I bought one for my son for christmas. Buy one - you wont regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Every-Single-Trip Piece I've used my Alpha SV for a year and a half now, from Colorado to Alaska. This was money well spent - the old adage "you get what you pay for" comes to mind. I'm 5-11, 200 lbs, and the large fits so well you don't know you have it on - layers perfectly over an R1 and/or Atom LT. ArcTeryx always gets the details right - perfect zippers, perfect hood, the hemlock works with a harness, nothing "rides up" or binds when you are climbing. The GoreTex Pro fabric is tough and quiet - no need to treat granite like a hot potato or baby it into the pack - it will hold up fine. You can find lighter and cheaper shells - fine if you are just walking in rain -, but most of them will shred and puncture all to easily with any hard technical use. Shells are like ropes - you don't always need it, but when you do, it has to be 100% reliable. This one is. Mine is in my pack, year round, for anything above treeline.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice jacket with good location of pockets. Purchased this jacket for all around use both Fall and Winter. It has an excellent hood,,with plenty of room for a helmet yet can be tighten down if used without. The material is,,definitely wind proof with good location of pockets.,,,,On the down side, I'am 6'3 225#. Purchase the XL and it fits but there's not enough room if you want a mid layer under it without feeling tight.. Also the length comes down to your belt. I prefer my jackets longer so my back if not exposed. Had to return it do to the above.,,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Avid Trekker Lovin This Jacket! In the Cascades we get all kinds of weather and a lot of rain from Fall into Winter and from late Winter into Spring. For someone who does a double traverse to fifteen hundred feet across five miles five days a week in this kind of weather this jacket can't be beat. Hands down it is the finest shell jacket ever made! I've been hiking, trekking (and at one time climbing) for more than fifty-five years and this jacket does exactly what it should. I wear a couple of thin baselayers and an Atom Lt in the colder temps, but I like being cooler most of the time, wearing an Lt vest with light base-layers. I you can, buy it! ,,,,One thing to know though is that the front hem of the Atom SV jacket is two inches longer and hangs out under the Alpha SV hem. I was annoyed about this and returned the Atom SV, but I found I found that it would have been too warm anyway so it wasn't a deal breaker. The Atom Lt, Cerium and Thorium jackets and the Atom LT vest all match up perfectly with the Alpha SV.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So good the jacket I've owned this jacket for about 5 years now, wearing it all over the world in many extreme environments and also in everyday weather. I've generally have an insulating layer underneath this jacket while in the mountains and it has fit perfectly. Although expensive, it is worth the price and will last for many years. For me, I now have the piece of mind that if the weather gets really nasty I’ll at least be dry and protected from the wind.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Front Zipper failed I bought this jacket 2 years ago. I loved everything about it until the teeth on the front zipper stopped working. I checked the starting alignment, looked for material binding in the teeth, and made countless attempts to zip up the jacket without success. Each attempt resulted in the teeth separating as I pulled the zipper upward. I will most likely buy another one of these but, will explore other options before pulling the trigger.

How does this jacket compare to the theta svx jacket?

Asked by: Jack
Hey there, Thanks for reaching out to us! Arc'teryx Alpha Jackets focus on lightweight materials and have a shorter overall length to accommodation harness use. Arc'teryx Theta Jackets have the most room for layering and the longest overall length. The Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket has won several awards in the outdoor industry!

Chest / Bust - Measure around your chest / bust, holding the measuring tape under your armpit.

Waist - Measure around the natural waist, which is often the narrowest part of your waist.

Hip - Measure around your hips at the widest part.

Sleeve Length - With your arms in a slightly bent position, measure from the center of the back of your neck, along the length of your arm, to the wrist.

Inseam / Pant Length - From a standing position, measure from your crotch to your ankle.

Head Circumference - Measure the full circumference around the widest part of your head.

Hand Length - Measure from the tip of your middle finger to the base of the palm.

Hand Width - Measure the circumference of your hand around the knuckles, excluding the thumb.

• Please note that all the info provided above refers to body measurements, and NOT the dimensions of the garment.

Next to Skin Fit - These snugly-fitting garments are made with stretch fabrics to fit next to the skin to enhance moisture management and thermal efficiency. Garments in this fit category when constructed using Arc'teryx's heavier-weight AR and SV fabrics also perform very well as mid layer pieces, and users should consider selecting a larger size to accommodate a base layer underneath if the intention is to use this layering system as a mid layer option.

Trim Fit - Trim-fitted garments share the motion-friendly traits with Arc'teryx "Athletic" fit garments, but are patterned with lower volume for reduced bulk. These close-fitting pieces layer well under other garments.

Athletic Fit - This is the "Arc'teryx Standard" fit. These complete patterns utilize anatomical shaping and gussets to enhance motion by minimizing excess bulk. Easy layering under or over each item extends seasonal versatility and comfort.

Relaxed Fit - Relaxed fit garments rely on higher volume patterns and a reduced amount of articulation to offer roomy mobility.

Expedition Fit - Cut roomier than the Arc'teryx Athletic fit and suitable for winter/extreme conditions, Expedition (XPD) fit garments are cut larger to accommodate multiple layers without binding or restricting movement.

• You can find the fit type and additional fit info for Arc'teryx styles in the product description FEATURES and SPECIFICATIONS.
