If, for some reason, society collapses and we enter a state of pure chaos, I will instantly run into our warehouse and grab an Arc'teryx Men's Beta AR Jacket (and then a couple of our heftiest ice axes). I would want the no-nonsense protection with bombproof durability. The GORE-TEX Pro will block wind, rain, snow and whatever else falls from the sky in our broken world. It is light and packable with an athletic fit that will accommodate layers for the coldest winters (of our discontent). The hand pockets (pack compatible) and pit-zips allow for ample ventilation so I could stay on the move even with drastically changing temperatures and conditions. This situation is purely hypothetical and will probably/hopefully never happen, but if the Beta AR is up for that challenge, it can certainly handle the challenges of our current world.

DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Hardshell I have encountered Over the years I have not been willing to spend the money on a good hardshell, instead I would buy a decently priced hardshell and they would start to leak in a couple of years or they were too heavy for the backpacking trip. This jacket is not like that of course it is gortex so it is loud to hike in and it is a shell so you need layering underneath. (I layer a fleece and an arc'teryx atom underneath and have yet to be cold in Michigan) This jacket is cut shorter than most hardshells that I have encountered (I I don't see this as a problem but it is up to you) Overall this is the best Hardshell I have found.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my Beta! I absolutely love this shell. It is very versatile when used in a layering system, and as solidly built as it is, I can still pack it down to about the size of a coke can in a stuff sack for packing.,,Speaking of solidly built, this think is body armor for the outdoors. I would not be nervous about bushwhacking, scrambling, etc. in this shell. My intent is for this to be the last shell I ever buy.,,,,Pit zips, nicely sized pockets placed in the right places, and quality show shells are first and foremost what Arcteryx is all about.,,,,I am 6', 180lbs and the medium is a perfect fit, leaving all the room I need for layering from wool sweaters to fleeces to down sweaters and jackets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great jacket. Attention to detail and craftsmanship is second to none I own several pieces from arcteryx from shorts, t shirts pants and jackets. Every piece is very well crafted and this jacket does not fall short of my expectations. I ordered a small as I am 5'6 145. The shoulders and body of the jacket fit me well for my build. Be aware this jacket is fitted therefore it's not meant for every body type. Sleeves are a bit long but sleeves come with Velcro strap to tighten Gore fabric is stiff and you won't sneak up on anyone. ,,,,For future use will use to snowboard and though the jacket is fitted there is enough room to layer underneath with a compression and a few layers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Pro Shell on the market, and its not even close I've owned a lot of GoreTex shells over the years and used them bass fishing, backpacking, general camping, snow and water skiing, frequent downpour on my way to the office - you get the idea. This jacket not only fits well but is 100% waterproof, windproof, just a comfy comfy jacket. ,,,,If I had one small complaint it would be the hood is too big if you're not wearing a ballcap or helmet. Otherwise this jacket is my go to for all conditions! Pricey but its probably the last shell you'll ever have to buy assuming you don't gain 50lbs and have to get a bigger size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Product Does It for Me I love this jacket. Nooo, I LOVE this jacket. I can wear it to the movies, all day during a blizzard or for hours running through a wipeout downpour and it feels as if I am still relaxing in my my own living room. The fact that it is really good looking to boot is just an extra - you know, you'd love Angelina Jolie even if she weren't a babe - but, hey, she IS a babe and that elevates her to the status of being a legend - just like this jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits true to size, Breathes excellent. Looks really good. Friends dig it. I have had this jacket for 2 months. Have used it in temps ranging between 50°f and -17°f. Layering is key. I primarily use this jacket for extreme cycle commuting and walking the dog in the woods at night whilst drinking tall boys of crap beer in sub zero temps. Dog likes it. I couldn't be happier with fit, finish, quality, temperature control (venting or lack there of depending on weather and activity) and finally pocket locations. Sleeve length is great. Matches length of jacket perfect. Hood works great w/helmet, but can be cinched to use w/out helmet. Oh, jacket zips past your chin, which is really nice! Rode to work today in -5°f temps w/24mph head wind for 5 miles on a fat bike in a few inches of snow. I was irritable due to wind drag, yet comfortable due to jacket. Get yourself one!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Light, Rainproof, Not Very Durable Purchased this shell in Nighthawk at the end of December to replace an aging Northface. This is going to be my go to shell for Ski Season and Backpacking. Overall the shell is super light with an athletic fit, I ordered a XL and I am 6'3 and 210lbs. I also purchased the Cerium LT Hoody to wear under and the combo fits perfect.,,,,The first day I put to shell to the test was on a rainy ski day in NH. The conditions were poor but the shell worked it's wonders and kept my upper body super dry. After the day was done, I noticed that there was a small (2cm) tear right under the logo, not sure how. The next day called up Arcteryx to see what they could do. The customer service rep was unfriendly and give me the option of returning the coat to have it repaneled for $40 but they don't have Nighthawk in stock. So I can either patch it or have another colored panel on the left front side. I purchased this coat for their reputation and customer service, after this I would not recommend Arcteryx.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You Will Not Find A Better, More Complete, Jacket Arcteryx makes the best jackets - period. End of story. I have worn mine almost daily for the last four (!!!) years and the piece still looks fresh off the rack. If you are concerned about price (which everyone is) consider the fact that you are purchasing a product that will outlast almost all the rest of your gear and has one of the most impressive customer service/warranty guarantees around. Do yourself a favor - buy this jacket.

Can you tell me the main differences btw the Alpha SV, Theta AR and the Beta AR jackets? Understand Alpha SV won awards. Interested if there is big differences in the materials.  Own a Atom LT Hoody and it is AWESOME! Hands down a great quality product.

Asked by: Chris89
Hey Chris, Thanks for reaching out to us. The main difference between the jackets are indicated by Arcteryx's naming scheme. The Alpha series focuses on climbing and alpinism gear that are harness and helmet compatible, have maximum articulation for overhead motions, and the highest possible durability-to-weight ratio.Theta garments are made for all around use with a longer length, chest and interior pockets, and room for layers. Beta jackets are also made for all around use, have a moderate length, hand and interior pockets, and room for layers. All jackets have a drop hem and are helmet compatible. The SV stands for Severe Weather and is made from the most durable materials that offer the most weather protection, while AR stands for All Around and provides high performance and weather protection for multiple activities. I hope this helps!

Mine is made in Canada, but it's a few years old. It might vary. I'd give MJ a call and see if they can check a current one.

How warm is this jacket? I live in Buffalo, NY and need something that can withstand 0 temps.  Can I zip a layer into it as a lining?

Asked by: WinterIsComing
Hey there, The Beta AR is a shell jacket which is designed not as an insulating piece but to be worn over a warmer middle layer, and it's primary function is to block out wind and moisture as well as sealing in warmth. Worn alone it would not do much to keep you warm, but wearing it under a down or fleece mid-layer would result in a very warm combination. It is not designed to be zip in compatible but works very well warn over lining.
