The Arc'teryx Men's Alpha Comp Pant is a weather-resistant pant for fast-moving ice and alpine climbing. The Alpha Comp is built with e3D patterning to bring additional movement into the trim fit pant so you can move unrestricted up the mountain. The combination of N40p 3L laminated Gore Fabric Techonology and Fortius 1.0 (84% nylon and 16% elastane) provides waterproof protection where you need it most with breathability for high-output activities. A durable water repellent finish and water-resistant zippers prevent water from soaking in at the surface. The reinforced instep is strong against sharp crampon points and zippered gussets open to allow the pant leg to be pulled over different sized boots. Sharp look and strong for the mountain climbing men.

FEATURES of the Arcteryx Men's Alpha Comp Pant

  • Low profile metal hook waist adjuster
  • Thigh pocket sits below harness
  • Three position lower leg gusset: Closed for crampon use, middle or fully open for ski touring boots

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another solid product from Arc'teryx I should first say I've only used these pants once on a recent ice climb in the Catskill Mountains in New York State. I found them to be awesome--they are super-flexible and burly to easily handle a long day in the mountains. I probably scraped my Grivel crampons up against the calf area all day, and there is no evidence of my clumsy movements. The pants held up amazingly well. As the images show, the extended cuff should also allow me to use these pants on a day of alpine touring while wearing ski boots. They're not waterproof, so on a deep powder day, there are better options, but for packed snow, I think they'll probably do fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Like these pants I first tried the Patagonia Mixed Guide pant in size 28, and though they fit in the waist, I found them too tight in the seat and thighs. They were sort of okay with the vents unzipped, but generally cramped my movement. Used, I couldn't return them, so I sent them off to someone who guided for me in Nepal, who happens to be one of the skinniest people I know. Then I tried these in size XS. The hardshell panels are more judiciously cut and placed. The softshell stretches nicely. I can move in these! They don't have all the bells and whistles of the Patagonia - fewer pockets, no vents or internal cuffs - but in this case less is more. I appreciate the more athletic fit - they work for a narrow waist with real glutes and thighs. And the waist belt is more functional - it doesn't loosen as the Patagonia did. Nice work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epic pants I just came back from a week of skiing in Breckenridge, CO and the temperature was everything from 5F/-10C to 47F/8C, and a snow storm thrown in for good measure. The AC pants adapted flawlessly, even resisted the cold wind much better than anticipated. I was out with the kids so a lot of bending down, on the knees in the snow etc - good stretch and very comfortable. The cut is pretty athletic and slim, which is the way I like it, no need for extra material but enough that you can fit some layers under. The final bonus was the weight, or lack thereof I should say. Rolls down very well (the only part preventing the folding down to nothing is the instep protection) into the carry-on backpack - checked luggage is lost luggage, as we all know. I have an older pair of Gortex Arc'Teryx pants but the fit is way too generous as well as a pair of Patagonia ski-pants, but these new Alpha Comp pants blows them both away. Best pair of outdoor pants I've owned so far. Highly recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Serious freedom backountry garment I had the occasion to try them last weekend, I do not put the five stars because is based in just one very successful experience. I went under controlled weather forecast announcing at worst some snowflakes but quite windy for an alpine hike, intense uphill and downhill. Extreme lightness and packability, just combined with phase AR bottom did the right job, as often getting the legs into deep soft snow generating permanent falls. I am sure is a perfect partner for backcountry skiers Comfortable fit and design for active purposes, belt Arc'teryx adjustment system is great to secure the position Nice to have a big pocket with good protection I used boots and then tied previously the pant inner loops (front and back) to the front and back shoes loops plus tightened the cord avoiding the useof extra gaiters (i would prefer a strap than a corrd but is an opinion) Inner patches did their job with the crampons spikes. I am sure we will be regular partners! Top parts used: phase AR base layer, equivalent Fortrez hoody and Alpha comp jacket which I provide also a review.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great pant to fill the niche between hard and soft shell winter pants. The Alpha Comp pant has quickly found a place in my skiing wardrobe, and proven itself as a reliable pice of kit -- one I'd highly recommend. Fit. As a muscular athlete, I worried somewhat about the trim fit, but my fears were quickly allayed. Even with the trim fit, the overall fit is outstanding. The e3D mapping seems to work out well, maintaining a trim appearance and avoiding any loose fabric, but never restricting movement. One note is in order, though, about the seat. On first trying the pants on, I was concerned (ok, actually my wife remarked) about the baggy seat; the reason becomes obvious when you move, however, and the pants allow you to contort athletically without binding in the crotch and seat. Form clearly wins over fashion, in this case. Fabric. The hybrid or composite construction is positive. The Fortius softshell offers exceptional breathability, the carefully placed Gore panels offer balanced weather protection, and the instep panel completes the package with good protection from ski edges and crampons. I've noted other reviewers who found the softshell material a bit light, but I've found it just about right for early winter adventures on the East Coast. Workmanship. Exactly what we've come to expect from Arc'teryx: impeccable, but even more notable in this case for the smooth melding of softshell and Gore waterproof-breathable fabric. Light Weight. A major selling point for me, the Alpha Comps come in at just under a pound, without sacrificing anything in the form or protection departments. One way is by deliberately going with less pockets and no vents, but I was conscious of that trade off and fine with it. Function. I've used them this far this winter as a lightweight skiing pant, and they've excelled in that role. Given the excellent mapping, the legs stay put without riding up at all, and the "open" leg fits easily over ski boots. Potential improvements. It would be nice to see some more color in future versions, even if only a black or nighthawk color. It might be nice to see a slightly heavier Fortius softshell fabric in future versions, though the current material has proven just about right so far. All in all, a great new addition to the winter Arc'teryx line -- one that fills a critical niche between full-on hard shell pants and just-not-enough softshells for winter pursuits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very dry and durable Had no worries this past weekend with the 3' of snow we got. Stayed dry and had all too many urges to jump into piles of snow.

Next to Skin Fit - These snugly-fitting garments are made with stretch fabrics to fit next to the skin to enhance moisture management and thermal efficiency. Garments in this fit category when constructed using Arc'teryx's heavier-weight AR and SV fabrics also perform very well as mid layer pieces, and users should consider selecting a larger size to accommodate a base layer underneath if the intention is to use this layering system as a mid layer option.

Trim Fit - Trim-fitted garments share the motion-friendly traits with Arc'teryx "Athletic" fit garments, but are patterned with lower volume for reduced bulk. These close-fitting pieces layer well under other garments.

Athletic Fit - This is the "Arc'teryx Standard" fit. These complete patterns utilize anatomical shaping and gussets to enhance motion by minimizing excess bulk. Easy layering under or over each item extends seasonal versatility and comfort.

Relaxed Fit - Relaxed fit garments rely on higher volume patterns and a reduced amount of articulation to offer roomy mobility.

Expedition Fit - Cut roomier than the Arc'teryx Athletic fit and suitable for winter/extreme conditions, Expedition (XPD) fit garments are cut larger to accommodate multiple layers without binding or restricting movement.

• You can find the fit type and additional fit info for Arc'teryx styles in the product description FEATURES and SPECIFICATIONS.
