SPECIFICATIONS of the Smartwool Trekking Heavy Crew Sock
Smarwool is a quality makes quality socks. These are comfortable, warm, and stay on your foot. They also come in just about any color you could want. The heavy hikers are kinda pricey for socks, but compared to the light and medium they are a little bit thicker. I can see these being my go to cold-weather casual socks but they can certainly be good for cold-weather hiking as well.
These socks are the softest, most comfortable socks I have ever worn!! I bought them for a snowmobiling trip in the Northwoods of Wisconsin in early February. The low for the weekend was around 10 below and these socks did the job.My toes got a little cool a few times, but I was sitting still blasting through snow and frigid wind. A little wiggling of the tootsies and they warmed right back up. They would be perfect for cold weather hiking and mountaineering.
These socks have been on my feet for about 30 miles of snow hikes. They keep my feed from sweating while keeping them nice and warm. Used them while four wheeling in march in michigan with just a pair of non insulated duck boots, they kept my feet from going numb.
Almost exclusively wear these socks on backpacking expeditions. In the warm months they keep my feet blister free. In colder weather, they keep my feet warm. They don't dry as well as other pairs of socks I knows, but overall they are definitely beter.
I have used the Smartwool socks for some time but not the Heavy. I normally wear a thin wool liner with a mid weight outer. I have now changed my thinking and will continue to use just this heavy sock. I wore them out recently on a day of snowshoeing through 3 feet of fresh powder. I was wearing my mountaineering boots in these conditions and found my feet to be super comfortable and warm all day. Great cushion, super soft, very comfortable. I would highly recommend these.
I have a circulation issue with my feet, and well, let's just say they hate winter. These socks are great when paired with a roomy boot. Super warm, super comfortable, and the inside is extra soft. LOVE them. Oh, and they stay up. Don't you hate it when socks fall down?
I own three different styles of smartwool socks. These are by far my favorite. The material will not wear out in the heels like the phd's. The thickness is perfect. Should last forever. Well worth the money.
I wore these and also Medium cushion over a few days of my first backcountry trip in years. Not only did I not get blisters, but over 4 days my callouses from walking around town were starting to decline (and haven't really returned). Since I have invested in many more Smartwool products and not looked back. I prefer a tighter sock so with a size 13 shoe I use Large sized socks and they work great, no liner.
