Even better than petzels in the past. Super lightweight and the retractable cord is perfect. We use them as medical headlamps for pararescue and these guys wouldn't use anything else. Very bright for being so small and compact. Worth every penny!!!
I've had the older version of this headlamp for the better part of a decade now. It is incredibly light and compact, while providing plenty of light for chores around camp, gathering firewood, investigating sounds, and navigating easy trails. Two levels of light intensity, as well as the red light cover every need I have when camping. While other lights may cast a blinding spotlight 50 yards down the trail, this covers all you need in a tiny, dependable package.
The biggest apprehension I had with purchasing this light as a gift was if the retracting cord would be too tight and therefore uncomfortable or too loose to support the light - Petzl seems to have struck a great balance as it definitely is comfortable, and stays put with a variety of normal activities. It doesn't have an overhead strap, so don't expect this to work for your late-night trampoline sessions. The biggest surprise was how useful the ball and socket pivot mechanism is - It can sit on the ground and aim in nearly every direction, in addition to quickly being strapped around a tree limb for a late night potty break or ritualistic dance around the fire. I can see that being very useful. Based on the specs you know it's lightweight and bright - overall its a good light for overnighters, or short trips into the backcountry. It uses the 2032 coin battery, so you'll almost always have a spare in your car's key fob should the need arise.
We use these as medical headlamps for field medical care. They are extremely lightweight and small, but don't let the size fool you. They are very bright and provide more than enough light to take care of minor injuries as well as critical. Our guys wouldn't go anywhere without their petzel e-lite. You won't be disappointed!!!
This little light is perfect! I always have it on me when climbing or hiking/camping. It is perfect for emergency situations and so far so good for not waking up my friends in the tent. It is also made by Petzl... so would you expect anything less than amazing? Well worth the money!
It is as small and as light as a couple of AAA. For that weight you get a fully functional, waterproof headlamp, so there is really no reason not to bring e-lite along. I have done long and challenging night hikes with e-lite but I would not recommend it for day to day use. The pivoting mechanism is not going to hold up to extensive use and the batteries don't last that long. You can get a lot more light and also use from small AAA Petzl.
"Small and quick headlamp when you need it"
Where this headlamp really shines (har har) is it's size and simplicity. Many times I've reached for this instead of my full sized battery pack headlamp simply because I can strap it on in a matter of seconds. The light output dims in comparison (that's the last time, I swear) to full sized units, but for everyday uses where holding a flashlight isn't practical, this is very useful and of course, being a Petzl, the quality is great despite it's simplicity. One thing I like especially is the red LED, which is less noticeable from a distance and great for reading maps or books without distracting others.
This little lamp is great. Twice now it has had huge impact on my trips. Once was a simple 0330 start and one of my buddies say "uh anyone have an extra headlamp?" Extra batteries don't help in that situation, but E+LITE does. The second happened when batteries died in one of our lamps and we could not find the extras in our bags even thought they had made it through the pre-trip check list. I won't go out without this little guy, it is too simple, light and useful to leave behind.
