I've had this rain jacket for about two years and it has held up pretty well. The sizing isn't to off and the colors that are provided are pretty sweet. My only complaint would be the waterproof resistance after awhile decreases especially if you are around a camp fire. I've had to go out and buy the Nikwax waterproof spray to clean my jacket. But it works well and I've only had to use the spray because I've used the jacket so much in the past two years. But overall its a good jacket for the price.
I bought this jacket a while back and have put it through a lot. This jacket works great on day hikes with a some down pour or for extended light drizzles but if you are looking for something that will hold up in torrential downpour or for long periods of rain fall this is not the jacket. I took this guy on a two week backpacking trip on the lost coast trail which runs along the northern coast of California. Being on the coast we often had fog role in on us and light drizzles come in the afternoon here and there and this jacket stood up great. But one day we did a summit of Kings Peak and we experienced decent rain for the entire day and this jacket wet through which left me at the peak wet and cold. So like I said if you want something light that is easy to take everywhere this is the jacket for you! But if you need something a little more beefy then look elsewhere.
All in all, this is a really nice rain jacket. The fit is slightly slimmer than I expected. I'm 5'6", 150lbs. and I rock a Small. The zippered arm pits are a life saver if you are doing anything strenuous. I use this jacket mostly when bike commuting on rainy days, and the fact that it stores compactly into its own pocket is awesome. Great jacket for the price!
"Great fit, used in tropical downpours with adequate protection"
Pros:- great fit for smaller frame individuals (XS will fit me at 5'3")- velcro seal over zipper will not let water through- wrist straps for adjustment for additional protectionCons:- no way to tighten hood so it stays on in windier environmentAdditional:- don't expect much insulation from this- waterproof it (multiple spray products on the market) every rainy season for long lasting performance
Another great product from Patagonia. I had this shell for about 2 years before it got stolen. This was my main rain jacket between spring and fall in Vermont. I used this jacket for hiking, around town, fishing, and everything else. It's a well made product with excellent water resistance. there a comfortable fabric that is placed on the neck and some other places through out the jacket. It fits true to size, a very athletic fit, I'm 6.4 200lb and it fits perfect. I love 90% of everything this jacket has to offer for the price range, however you sacrifice breath ability. i found myself taking the jacket off between hikes and other activities that were very physical. If your looking for a more breathable jacket I would look into a light soft-shell that has good water resistance. Great jacket for the weekend warrior, great for around town or light hiking use.
This jacket is great. The 2.5 layer material is very breathable and lightweight. It repels water very well. in the past, some of the jackets that I have had, i receive them and the water does not bead in certain spots. Patagonia did an awesome job with the water repellency on this jacket. The water beads up everywhere. They use Granger's water repellency @ their company, which when I researched them, is an epic company. I am thinking about ordering some for my other jackets. The material feels very durable as well. Btw, the viking blue, is, @ least i think, a somewhat darker royal blue. I love the color. The fit is a tad baggy in the torso, but that is good for layering in cold weather. It works well as a wind-breaker too. The inner lining is also not sticky, so when you sweat you do not feel the material latch onto your skin. Overall, it is a great jacket, great feel, great weight, and I highly recommend it.
I wanted to like this jacket, but the sizing is unlike any other jacket I've experienced. I have fairly long arms, but the Torrentshell's arms are just hilariously long, at all sizes. Even the Small's arms were too long, and I usually wear a Medium.I'm also not thrilled by the color options. Patagonia could very easily make these jackets more exciting by introducing more contrast between the logo on the breast and the main jacket color. North Face seems to have cornered the market on pleasant contrast colors, although they often overdo it. If Patagonia wants to sway North Face customers, they need to beat TNF at their own game.
"Perfect For a Range of Weather Conditions"
This jacket is great for both rain and wind and is very lightweight. I particularly like wearing it over a base layer, so I can ditch my bulky winter jacket for temperatures above freezing, or pack it away later (it doesn't wrinkle much). The armpit zippers are also a huge plus for me to get much-needed ventilation in warmer weather. The zipper pockets are also secure and large.
