The Patagonia Men's R4 is an impressively warm and windproof fleece jacket. You might be thinking "the R4 is the highest number R jacket in the series... it must be the warmest".... well, that's awfully presumptuous of you, but you're right. This time. The R4 is comprised of 3 layers: the outer is super warm high-loft R4 fabric, the middle is Polartec Windbloc polyester with a windproof laminate, and the inner layer is an R2 grid. You might be thinking "sounds like you're wearing a sandwich".... well, this time you're not so right. Wearing a sandwich would be strange and not feasible and wouldn't give you this level of warmth, comfort and mobility with minimal bulk. So quit trying to wear a sandwich, silly, and check out the Patagonia R4 mid-layer.

"Great Midlayer, Or Outerlayer on Warmer Days; Not Cut Generously Enough to Wear with Muli Layers"
Super Soft. Durable Fabrics and Constructions. Windproof. Fleecey and Flexible. But it's really more of a windproof midlayer than a "jacket". You can't really layer it over a casual shirt and tee. If that's your intention, get a puff jacket. You don't really need the layers with the R4 anyway, it's so warm. Just a tee or a long-sleeve base-layer and you're fine. I'm 6'3" and 190 (36" sleeve) and the large fit me well. Not as much room as the R1 or R3, but it does fit under my Patagonia Alpine Guide softshell. the fit is generally snug with extra room under the arms for freedom of movement. It's been blisteringly cold in New England this year, and my R4 keeps me super warm. And the breathablitilty and full zip makes the outdoor/indoor transition comfortable. The pricepoint is high, but this thing is really like a R1 + R3 + windblock. Much more than the sum of it's parts and highly feature laden. In short: Get it!
"Highly reccomended. Much warmer than expected."
In short, I love this jacket. It is much warmer than I expected, and quite windproof. I went out for a short jog in windy 15F weather, and didn't feel a thing. Its fully lined a very soft fleece type material too, which is half the reason I bought this jacket. ALSO, while the pockets seem normal on the outside, you could fit an elephant inside them. The pocket lining extends down for the entire length of the jacket and I LOVE IT.At first, I was disappointed with how snugly this jacket fit under my armpits, but after a few days it stretched out and fits perfectly. It's an athletic fit, so it'll hug your body, but note that this jacket is very stretchy. If you're looking for something to wick sweat away, you might want to look at the Patagonia retro-x, since it has a mesh lining.I bought a size small. I'm 5'9" and 135 lbs.
"They finally got it right with the Fall 2013 / SP 2014 version!"
I just got this fleece. 165lbs, 5'10. Medium is tailored fit for me.Prior to this I've tried to love the pre-2012 version, which had the high side pockets, cinch cord and classic Patagonia logo. The small was too small, and the medium.. well, I swam in it.I was excited to try the post-2012 redesigned version where they moved the side pockets down (not good for harness, but great for everyday use). However, this version failed miserably.. It didn't have a cinch cord at hem, and the cuffs were loose.. Thus defeating the purpose of this fleece (windproof)... the medium did fit better on me (more tailored fit). I decided to wait for Patagonia's response to the lack of cinch cord outrage. Well they've listened and delivered by adding the cinch cord. The medium is a slim fit; keep this in mind if you have broad shoulders and huge arms). For me, the only gripe is the lack of elasticity at the cuffs, they could've added a gaiter of some sort. Nonetheless, I love this version of the R4!
Patagonia’s R4 jacket is the warmest fleece I’ve ever owned, and it provoked instant envy from friends and family. As a casual but frequent camper and hiker, I appreciate the multiple pockets.I researched the R4 heavily before buying and found that many reviewers dismissed it as too warm and not breathable enough to serve as an effective layer in heavy activity; however, I can already tell you that it works just fine as an ultra-light outer garment for damp, windy 40-degree weather. The Windbloc layer does its job perfectly, and when you need to vent you can loosen the hem drawstring, open up to three pockets or unzip the whole thing. I’m taking this to Mongolia to use as an outer jacket in cool, windy conditions, under a hard shell in cold, windy conditions or under a down parka for light activity (like runs to the outhouse) in extreme cold (-20 and below). It’s a go-to garment.
"Great Christmas gift that beat expectations!"
I purchased the Patagonia R4 for my husband's Christmas gift, and he absolutely loves it! The fleece's warmth is perfect for a Virginia fall and winter. The medium fits perfectly (5"7, 160 lbs). Great coat that we expect will last several years!
"Fantastic buy, I get tons of use out of this jacket up until mid Spring."
Although its expensive this jacket is well worth the money. I can wear just a long sleeve shirt under it and a hat, and I'm good to go for the day! This jacket really is amazingly warm, I normally wear a small but I feel I should have gotten a XS simply because the bottom and cuffs of the jacket are not adjustable and it can get a little drafty sometimes. Speaking of wind, the R4 is a great wind blocker, even on gusty days the wind wont cut through. This is a great all arround buy, I would buy it again for sure.
