The Patagonia Men’s Capilene 4 EW Crew is the warmest base layer in the Capilene line for winter expeditions. EW stands for Expedition weight, not ew as in gross, so don’t get any ideas. It even has Polygiene permanent odor control in the fabric, so definitely no grossness here. The inside is brushed fleece and feels incredibly soft against your skin while the outside is smooth so additional layers can be pulled on with ease. The Polartec Power Dry High Efficiency fabric works to pull sweat off of your skin and dry it out quickly so you can reach your goals in comfort. Thumb loops will ensure your wrists are covered and a long cut means you can tuck it into your pants to eliminate any draft.

This is a warm layering piece but I think I prefer the current Capilene 3 Midweight. Patagonia changes the 4 line pretty radically ever few years, and the current edition is a tight form fitting layering piece that works with the upper layers. In my opinion, I don't think this is a very good shirt to wear alone, wind would go right through it, thou some ripped guys might like to show off the tight look.
This base layer is a 2xl and fits me fine. I'm 6'1' and 260 lbs. not your skinny little pencil necked geek. I work out in the cold all day 12 hours + and this shirt is comfortable, easy to move around in, wicks away sweat and is warm enough to do the job. If you are just going from the car to your office this is more than you would need. If live and work outside this is and good base layer. I like to keep it light and not wear bulky layers this works great. Thank you moosejaw for having larger sizes because not all of us are 5'7" & 150 lbs.
"I really hope I get to use this for a long time."
This is an amazing shirt. I have the cap 4 bottoms in black but ordered this top in grey so I can wear it around the office as well as on the mountain. the wrist straps are concealable which means I can wear it in public and people won't suspect that I'm a ninja.
but then they say it is form fitting. so no surprises there. i could do without the extra longer sleeves, but it's easier to roll em up a bit than to try to stretch them out and avoid looking like an idiot wearing a pseudo-half-size long sleeve shirt!
