For the last 4 months I've been wearing this jacket hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and tooling around town. I really love the way it looks and feels. The inside has a soft knit layer that feels great against the skin and helps wick moisture. The outside really is waterproof (I wore it in the shower to test it). It is also breathable, but not as breathable as more expensive coats. Still, the coat is great at thermoregulation, due to the pit zips and large front pockets. I do wish the pitzips went up further (they go from the bottom to the middle of the armpit). The hood is helmet compatible and has excellent adjustability (one in the back for horizontal adjustment, and one on each side for vertical adjustment). In my experience, OR makes quality stuff, and this jacket is no exception.
"Excellent softshell, in a sea of mediocre examples"
For quite some time I tried to replace an aging Marmot soft-shell jacket with limited success. I tried on many jackets, and had basically thrown in the towel on finding something suitable and affordable. Recently, however, I saw the Mithrilite on sale and decided to give it a shot, having never owned an OR product before, and it's been an excellent jacket. It fits well, long enough in the sleeves and torso (which is strange, as usually jackets are too short in one of the other for my strange shape). I purchased a Medium (6' and ~155 lbs) which leaves enough room for a light layer underneath, but not so much room that the jacket feels bulky. The construction is awesome, and it repels water well though I'm not sure I would intentionally jump into a downpour in it (though OR claims it's waterproof). Overall, an awesome jacket.
This is a great softshell for ice climbing and alpine pursuits. The hood is very roomy and fits great with a helmet, but doesn't feel too large when it is down and resting against your back. The zippers seem very durable and highly water resistant. The pit zips are awesome and begin at the waist of the jacket, allowing the entire sides to be opened up for breathability. I am 5'8, 140 lbs. and the size Small fits great. It is cut a little long in the arms, but the wrists can be cinched down under or over gloves. The blue color looks sweet and I can't wait to use this in South America this summer!
