The Outdoor Research Men's Axiom Jacket is a storm shell for alpine climbing and skiing. When the rain, sleet, snow and wind are factors in your climbing day, the Axiom steps up with Gore-Tex Active 3L fabric to protect your upper half. The Active fabric is the most breathable waterproof fabric in the Gore-Tex line, making it ideal for high-output activities. The jacket also has a bit of stretch in it so you can move and reach freely to the next hold. The hood is helmet-compatible and adjusts so you won’t lose peripheral vision. The dual hand pockets zipper shut to secure a pair of liner gloves while staying up and out of the way of your harness. The left hand pocket also doubles as a stuff sack for packing away on bright, sunny days.

A big investment but well worth it if you spend a lot of time outdoors and in wet climates. This jacket will keep you dry in even the harshest conditions. It is built to last and has enough flex to keep you quick and agile. It is very light and packable. The fit is a little loose but that allows for it to be worn over clothing. All in all, a serious shell for wet conditions.
I've worn this jacket - and its prototype - since June and it has quickly become my go-to jacket. That's the jacket that I grab 80% of the time, and have to justify replacing it with something else. I've skied big multi-day tours and climbed long alpine routes in this jacket, and it has a degree of ventilation and stretch that I never thought possible with a Gore-Tex fabric. I'm really looking forward to using it this winter skiing.
This is the best waterproof jacket I've ever used. I had nearly given up on GORETEX and fully waterproof layers for 90% of my days in the mountains, but the Axiom really is much more stretchy, breathable, and slimmed-down than older shells. It isn't as breathable as a light softshell such as the ferrosi, but it is a step in that direction yet the Axiom is 100% waterproof and I've had it out in some big storm days to prove it.I was provided this jacket by OR for product testing/expedition use.
If you want one jacket to take care of you no matter what you're doing, this is it. It's practically a softshell - stretch, soft and crinkle free. And, this new Gore-tex is really breathable - really. For me though, the best part of this jacket is its simplicity... no silly chapstick pocket or stuff like that, just a trim fitting shell with a couple pockets. I expect I'll be wearing the Axiom on most of my adventures for a while now, it's just so much lighter than any comparable softshell. A stretchy, soft, hardshell... Love it.
