Every time I try on a new garment from Marmot, it’s like meeting the love of my life all over again, but please don’t tell the love of my life that I said that. These shell pants are everything I hoped they would be. The cut and fit are great – at 6’1, 160 lbs., I wear a medium). Like most Gore-Tex stuff, it doesn't breathe terribly well, but it will stop wind and water as well as anyone could ask. These are the pants I would wear to play basketball in freezing rain – you know, if, for some reason, I had to play basketball in freezing rain.
The pants are light, well made and very comfortable fit. I ordered XL because of the inseam. Large are too short for my likes. They're true to the Goretex name, they're waterproof and wind proof. Cons-Lack of belt loops and the length of the zippers at the feet.
I have been looking for Gore Tex (or similar) pants I can run in when it is raining and cold. I am an ultrarunner so am sometimes out on runs for hours, and would rather not let cold rainstorms deter me from training. Most Gore Tex pants are meant for mountaineering or skiing/boarding, and far too heavy for running. I have tried other lighter fabrics and brands that either didn't work (to keep me dry), or too flimsy (one shredded in my side-loading clothes washer). These pants rock. Very light, not too warm, can move freely in them, and brushing against branches and bushes didn't cause any noticeable defects in the fabric.
These pants are fully waterproof and the fit and style of the cut is amazing. Great mobility too. The other reviewer is wrong about the pants being baggy, if anything they are cut slimmer, a 'European Cut' as I was told. I've never been a Medium anything in my life, but that is what size I had to order. Read the size guide and you won't go wrong. Also these pants will be shredded if you use them with Crampons without gaiters, be warned. I still wouldn't go with a heavier pant though. These are lightweight for packing, thin enough for summer, and all you would ever need for winter if you wear a base underneath. Get the gaiters to protect them, if you use crampons, done.
If you're looking for something ultra light and breathable these are great pants. I've been very cautious buying Paclite stuff in the past because i always questioned its durability. These have held up great. When i first got them i was scared to sit on rocks with them now i do anything i would normally do, i've gained some confidence in their ruggedness. The are a little baggy i could have gotten a size smaller i think but overall they are great.
