The new Smart assisted-belay device by Mammut offers unparalleled safety and ease of use for cragging, all in a lightweight and inexpensive package. The unique design combines very easy rope management making feeding a huge armload of slack for that hard clip easy, with a super-dependable locking feature that makes catching a hard fall very easy, even with ultra-skinny ropes. A side benefit is that this locking action makes marathon belay sessions easy while while your partner dogs his project for the upmpteenth time. Not for use as an autoblocking belay device.

- Its intuitive operation and clever handling make the Smart equally popular among both indoor and sport climbers

- In situations where the user has a sudden shock, the function corresponds to the reflex movements of the human body

- Suitable for all current HMS carabiners and single ropes from 8.7 to 10.5 mm in diameter

"Worth it" 04/23/13
One of the guys I climb with hangdogs a lot. It's not that he's a bad climber, he just likes hanging around. Using a regular ATC, I'd burn through half my strength just keeping him up. When I switched over to the Smart, I could let it handle gripping the rope. Likewise, lowering on this is a breeze. Note: always keep your hands on the brake line, even using this.
"Good product for the price" 01/25/13
I have used other people's grigri2 quite a bit and I was looking to get something similar of my own. However, I didn't have the cash to buy a grigri and while searching I stumbled upon this. No it doesn't function as well or even the same as a grigri. But, it works pretty great and I prefer it when sport climbing. Sometimes I would have issues with the grigri locking up when I want to give slack. With this I haven't had any problems. Overall, looks good, functions great, and it's relatively cheap.
"Love this thing" 07/01/12
The Mammut Smart is in a default state of auto lock. In the context of top roping, insofar as enough rope slack has been taken as such that the Smart is perpendicular to your carabiner, it's autolocked. You belay as normally, but since after taking slack the Smart immediately returns to auto-lock state, the amount of wrist energy you save is enormous. Also, the Smart is attached to your carabiner in a way similar to how an ATC would. So in the event of equipment failure, you can still emergency belay with your carabiner. Not so with the grigri.
"Works, but not as much as advertised" 04/23/12
It does assist braking but not too what I was expecting it to do. I understand it is not auto locking like grigri but just did not meet my expectations in terms of functionality. The size and shape was rather waste of space when packing too, compared to a grigri2 althought grigri2 is much heavier. But nonetheless, looks cool, Mammut branded and does assist braking afterall!
"Good Value" 07/06/11
I like this device, it works a lot like a regular ATC, so its not hard to use.For the price i don't think you will find a better auto locking belay out there. Its not quite as good as a grigri when it comes to lowering, but now that i have this (and my friend finally took his gri back) ill be happy to hook this up for all my belay needs... until a grigri magically appears in my gear bag.Bottom line is if your looking for something better than an ATC but are strapped for cash, this is for you. If you already have a grigri then i would pass on this unless you want it just to have a kinda weird looking bit of gear to show to your friends.
"50% GriGri, 50% ATC, 100% Performance" 05/09/11
No better device for the price. Lighter, cheaper, and easier to work than a Grigri - I love the Smart. My only gripe is that it jams up with thick ropes (10.5 is pretty much the limit). It feels like a real nice in between for those of us who don't like the feel of a Grigri (read: can't afford one) but want something a little better than an ATC. I'd recommend the smart to anyone.
"Outstanding piece of equipment - Inexpensive not cheap" 05/08/11
I'm not as young as most of you LOL, but man do I love this sport. Anyway, I'm active with the Boys Scouts and volunteered to help out at the Kiwanis Boys Scout climbing tower in Mason from 8 am until 4 pm. this past weekend. My hands got plenty tired being on belay for hours and hours. I had brought along my Mammut Smart Belay Devise... Man-o-Man what a great piece of equipment. This is one very reliable auto assist belay device with great stopping power.. The Mammut Smart Belay devise Inexpensive not cheap and light weight. I demonstrated it to the Lead Climbing Instructor, who was so impressed that he will be recommending that Council purchase these for future use. Belay is on. Climb on.

"Great product, especially for lead belaying" 04/28/11
The Mammut Smart device is not only a good looking piece of equipment but it also works brilliantly! The ease of feeding rope to the climber is almost better than the Gri Gri and taking a fall has never been easier(catches about 50% of the fall). Great buy!
"Great hang-fest belay tool" 12/22/10
This seems to be a pretty amazing tool! The best way I can describe it is... a regular tube style belay tool action until the climber falls, then it bites the rope nice and tight. It's great for the gym or sport routes where your climber is going to be falling and hanging a bunch as you don't need to hold the brake line as tightly with this little guy. And it's really cheap!
"Much better than a Grigri" 12/07/10
Though I don't prefer to belay with the smart, if you have me the choice of grigri or smart, I'd chose smart every time. Its lighter, easier to use, and it feels safer. and its cheaper! When belaying sometimes it locks up a little, but this is not nearly as bad as what the grigri does. the smart is a good device, though I still use my Reverso 100% of the time.
