"What it is: Backpacking Jacket Extraordinaire. What it isn't: Around town casual wear"
If you are looking for a jacket, don't buy this one. There are others that are warmer, there are others that have pockets for your car keys or the gloves you might or might not wear today. But if you are likely to shoulder a backpack and go out for a day, a week, a month, buy this jacket right now. If you ski cross country, and sweat, you found the ultimate piece of equipment.Starting with the hood, what a phenomenal piece of engineering. It is as big as a tent, and can accommodate a helmet for a winter bike ride. Inside the hood, you can create your own ecosystem. You can pinch the flexible wire in the rim to create a horizontal slit, a vertical slit, a large round opening, you can fold and slip it back to make a very high neck gaiter. The back, air conditioned to release heat under a backpack, not for blocking a hard wind from behind, but the front does that exceptionally well. No pockets under the waist belt of your backpack, no seams to rub where the shoulder straps sit.
If you like the look of outdoor clothing then you like Fjallraven. This is a very tough breathable jacket. The hood is superb and allows you to use it in a variety of ways. I have found Fjallraven outerwear to be cut on the slim side. I normally wear a large and the large fit me perfect and gave me full range of motion due to the flexability of some of the fabric. It did not however allow for much of any layering. I returned it for the XL which works perfect. I have a 44" chest and a 33" waist. The sleeves are on the long side. This Jacket has no insullation and if you are going ultralight may not be your first choice.
"Very well thought out and outstanding quality"
When ordering clothing on line, you always wonder if you'll wind up sending it back for a different size. Fjallraven's sizing guide was true to size for me. I'm 6'3" and ~200lbs, ordered the XL and it fits like it was made just for me. The sleeves are plenty long for my wingspan and the body has enough room for a light layer or two underneath but isn't baggy. The hood system is nothing short of amazing. Totally adjustable to your melon and provides multiple levels of cover. The G1000 is in all of the right places and the stretch fabric acts as a second skin, not restricting movement at all. Side zips do a great job of mitigating moisture. All said, I'm very pleased with my purchase and am looking forward to years of service from this jacket. Matter of fact, I am so pleased with the jacket, I'll be ordering the Keb trousers next! Special thanks to Moosejaw for providing fair pricing, stellar customer support and communication along with speedy shipping. You guys/girls ROCK! WHOOT, WHOOT
Was very hesitant because of the price. But Fjallraven proved itself to me in Iceland ad now that I'm returning I needed some for myself. This jacket is amazing. Very rugged while somehow maintaining flexibility. Cut is very flattering. I haven't tested it in full downpour conditions yet but it does great against driving snow. And the hood is incredible, it folds down into a tunnel around your face. I can't wait to put this through its paces on my return trip.
Fjallraven was recommended to me because I do a lot of bush wacking and my previous shell was from Northface and it had a lot of holes. Nothing wrong with Northface, but it was not very durable when bush wacking through spruce stands. Took it to Wood Buffalo National Park in Northwest Territories/ Alberta for a research trip and it was great! No holes were made while walking through dense bush! and it vents really good! The breast pockets are large enough to fit a GPS, markers, map, pocket knife, wallet into one of them. A bit pricey but when you're buying quality, you only cry once.
"Probably the best backpacking/hiking jacket on the market!"
Well, I do not know what to say... If you're looking for the BEST hiking/backpacking jaket in terms of performance and look - I have a great news for you - you found it:)I bought in black so I can wear it anytime.
I stumbled upon Fjallraven and picked up this Keb jacket on sale. I've used it on a few short hikes so far, but mostly for wearing as my regular jacket. The G1000 material feels durable and the jacket feels well constructed. The grey stretch over the arms and back is very breathable and if you are not layered well, you can really feel the wind through this fabric. With a pack on and a base and mid-layer (I use an icebreaker sweater) the wind isn't a problem. I particularly like the high neck (when the hood is not up) since it protects the neck against the wind quite well. Great jacket.
"Live up to the high reputation & expectation of Fjallraven products"
The jacket is great for hiking in tropical rainforest. Not only it is light and stretchable, it is also very tough and extremely durable, brazing through the forest and woods with dense vegetation with ease. Moreover, the waterproofing shell coupled with the functional hood make it an ideal jacket for hiking in the wet humid rain-prone tropical forest. It is like an second skin armour that protect you from the elements and make you feel kind of invincible!
this is a very sturdy jacket, the g-1000 is still like new even after bushwhacking through brush that destroyed my friends "lucky" hoodie. its pretty light for a canvas shell but still isnt as compact as a synthetic one. the stretch panel on the back leaves you feeling a little exposed in high winds if you arent wearing a backpack but is a life saver when you are.
