"Best full-size lantern" 09/27/12
I've used a variety of full-sized lantern's, but this is the only one I would recommend. It's a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. The dimmer switch is great, because you can fine tune the amount of lighting. Battery life has been excellent, a the lantern has held up to a lot of use. I recommend the smaller version as well when you need to pack lighter.
"If you can fit it in, take it. Best camp light I've ever had" 03/19/12
This light is a turbo charged Apollo. It throws an awesome light but it must be at the right height or you will be sitting in a shadow or blinded. However, that is what makes it so good. You can sit without any light in your eyes and have plenty to read or eat by as long as you can elevate it slightly above the table just enough to light the whole table. I love the split carry handle for slipping it over a rope or thin branch and the light output is so good that we never have to have it at full strength. It probably wouldn't suit a hiker because of it's bulk and weight (4 x D cell batteries) but for a sea kayaker with a bit more room or car camping it is awesome.
"Great Product does what it says" 09/08/11
I received my Titan Lantern a few weeks ago and just recently my power was out for two days. I had this thing run pretty much no stop once the sun went and it hung in there like a champ. If you need a lantern for emergency situations or for car camping then go with this one you won’t be disappointed.
"Sturdy, well designed lantern that efficiently gives lots of light where you want it" 03/14/11
Our older gas lantern bulb cracked so we started looking for a LED lantern to replace it. We looked at several models and liked this one the most because the light that came out of it was directed out and down where the others we looked at didn't seem to control the light. In fact many of the other lamps had many more LEDs but even then the light wasn't all that useful as the Black Diamond. The only problem we had is not owning two of these, one for camping and one for grilling at home. We love this lantern.
"Excellent Lighting Source" 02/28/11
This camp lantern provides ample light for reading and for most activities around camp. We originally bought this for car campouts and it is great in those settings. The light from the lantern is so good that we also put it in the backpack. We got spoiled with having good light I guess. The drawback comes with backpacking, this lantern is on the heavy side with 4 D batteries and it takes up a good bit of space in the pack. But, we sometimes like to read or play rummy in the tent in the evenings so we choose to pack it in as it just makes things better than just having headlights.
"hi ho lantern! away!!" 12/29/10
I'm impressed with this lantern! as everyone says though its more of a vehicle camping light as it is big and heavy. very bright though, it does project a brighter ring of light that surprised me, i was expecting more ambient light but i still like it just fine.
"patagonia softshell" 12/29/10
First off I'm 6'1'' 200 lbs and I have exceptionally long arms and this jacket's sleeves fit. That to me is amazing, long have i been plagued with sleeves that are to short even now! as I sit in my mountain hardware LoDown jacket the sleeves ,leave my wrists bare. The description markets this as a slim fit but i don't see the slimness, I'm not complaining though, it makes it a lot easier to layer underneath. Waterproofness is top notch! holding a sleeve under the sink left my sleeve bone dry. I do think however this will deteriorate over time (as softshells do) but with proper care its easy enough to maintain.
"Not the lightest... but by far the brightest" 12/16/10
This lantern is great for car camping. It isn't ultralight, but it is super bright. It far outshines any battery operated lantern I 've seen. It easily fills a 6 man tent with soft, easy-to-read-by light. I take this on car camping trips & on rock collecting outings, and even use it in my house when the power goes out. It is durable and well made, and adjusts from dim to bright. As long as shaving ounces is not a priority, this lantern is tops. If you want a lightweight one for hiking, I use the BD Orbit.
"The best LED lantern out there as long as you arent trying to go lightweight!" 12/13/10
I had been looking into LED lanterns and stumbled upon the BD line and had to check em out! I didn't have weight and size constraints (mainly using on ATV and truck camping trips) so of course I went with the biggest and baddest. I love the variable output and user interface. One click goes to high or hold the button until you find the right amount of light. The beam is decent and it is cast out and downwards so it shines on the table/ground and NOT in your face. All in all I think my only complaint would be terrible battery choice!!! D-cells suck! They're heavy and alkaline's crap out in cold weather. I would've preferred something I could find in lithium... maybe a metriccrapton of AA's?
