The Spot headlamp is amazing! There are so many features such as brightness levels, strobe, red lights, battery life indicator, and a locking feature to prevent it from turning on accidentally. I thought it would be just a regular headlamp but I had to actually read the manual to figure out how to work all the features. The features are not hard to learn and simple to use.
This headlamp surpasses any I've had in the past based on its brightness, battery life, and cool features like a lock mode so it doesn't turn itself on in my backpack like every other lamp I've owned always does. What's the point of a light that always out of batteries!? No longer an issue :)
"Bright Light, One of my Favorite Outdoor Brands"
The Black Diamond Spot Headlamp is a good hands free piece of equipment. I will be using it primarily around the tent and while biking. I selected Black Diamond because I’ve enjoyed their ice axes and crampons. Their electronics are just as impressive. The headlamp is light and comfortable on the head. The strap won’t get caught up in the hair if you’re a girl or a hippie. The modes are pretty diverse and I really enjoy the red night vision, it’s like you’re in the Special Forces. The white lights are very bright and give you great distance. I’m confident in the safety the light gives me while riding, oncoming traffic will definitely see. The battery warning light is pretty cool and I have no complaints. Maybe in the future they could make it submersible in water. I was pretty surprised that Black Diamond included three name brand batteries; most companies give you generic cheap batteries. Black Diamond is certainly one of my top three outdoor equipment brands.
I have to say, I wasn't expecting much from a $40 headlamp - I couldn't have been more wrong. The main beam is quite bright and throws a decent spread. The auxiliary white LED's provide a good level of brightness for close work, and the red is a great feature for those late night stumbles to take care of business. It's comfortable to wear and very easy on batteries. Love the ability to dim to any amount, and to just have a quick change to full brightness with a simple tap. Haven't gotten a chance to test how water-resistant it is, but it seems like it'll hold up nicely to a light rain. The single button setup can be a bit confusing, but once you play around with it for a few minutes, you kind of figure it out. Lens is plastic, so take care not to scratch or shatter it, but other than that, fairly bulletproof.
This review is not for the the experienced headlamp user but for the person thinking about jus getting one. I never had a head lamp until this one but it is awesome. I used t only use a normal flashlight but then I found this and decided to dip my toes I to the world of head lamps and I don't regret it!! Great settings easy to use and durable ecspecially for he price
This headlamp is perfect in every way. Weight, comfort, battery life, visibility, lighting options, price, water resistance...I can't think of a single way to hate on this product. I really want to, but I can't find a flaw. Black diamond did such a great job manufacturing this that I sent therm a personal thank you card and baked them cookies. Alright well I didn't bake them cookies or write a card, but I did take the time to write this review. The color options all look great, you really can't go wrong here unless you're looking for a light totally waterproof.
"I'm convinced this is the best value headlamp available!"
I'm convinced this is the best value for your money if you're looking for a durable, very bright headlamp with a good feature set (this has been confirmed as a great headlamp by several outdoor stores I've visited). The light is very bright and has a dimming function for to save batteries. I found it to be very comfortable and easy to use. I like this better than multi-led lights because it makes for a smaller footprint on your head (the other ones tend to be wider). I was worried that having a single main LED would mean a sacrifice on brightness but I was thoroughly impressed when I first turned this sucker on. No complaints whatsoever and the battery indicator light is a nice bonus. The only other lamp I would suggest would be the Black Diamond Storm which is a weatherproof version of this headlamp.
Bought one of these for an upcoming move to Mongolia (yes, Mongolia). I've only tested it in an urban setting so far, but don't see any reason why it wouldn't be even more effective in a pitch-black environment. The bright setting changes night into day, and the dimming function is great. The red LEDs seem a little silly (Is darkness-adjustment time ever really going to make a difference for a non-Navy SEAL?), but this headlamp manages to cram four or five functions into an intuitive one-button design. I like that it uses AAA batteries, as I'll never have to worry about finding replacements in an inhabited area.Strap's comfy, and the light rests solidly but comfortably on my forehead. It's not visible in the photos, but the light is attached to a plastic hinge that allows you to angle it downward, so you can see the ground as you look straight ahead (good if you're a long, loose-haired hippie like me). Doesn't interfere with my glasses.
