Perhaps it is more like eye candy for a climber. It is nice that the carabiner doesn't get crossloaded, plus the magnet is easier to open when you're trying to get it off the grigri. This way it doesn't get jammed like some screwgate carabiners.
"Reminds me of the last girl I was with."
This biner if fantastic when you break out ropes and chains, but like all fun women it takes some work. There's a lot of unlocking and clicking that has to be done when you put in on your belay loop, but it's worth the stares and ogling when people look down at your Belay Device. Works really well, just lots of clicking to get it situated- would buy again.
This carabiner is very difficult to open accidentally. But very easy to open with two fingers. Its unique shape minimizes the risk of cross loading. My only concern is the size of the gap between the spine and the gate (roughly 1/2 inch), so I can't use it on my tools or for tieing in to multi strand webbing anchors. With its light weight, small design, and oriented function, hope it will be perfect for my grigri. Going out tomorrow ...update to follow
"great for easy switching between belay slaves(while top roping)"
this is great to quickly and easily switch between belayers(top roping) is kind of a pain to reload with a grigri until you get used to it, but i have noticed that while lowering someone with a grigri if you hold the rope to far back the rope can actually open one side of the magnetron, this is scary but the magnetron still doesnt open. another thing is that sometimes my harness can open one side while climbing and its possible a rock could undo the other side at the same time, for this reason i choose to only use this as a belay biner.
This magnetron autolocking gate is genius and I love it! I've encountered other autolocking biners that I've been known to just fiddle with and "accidentally" open when I'm bored. There's no casually grazing and opening this bad boy. Unfortunately that means I'm now less than graceful and timely trying to set up my grigri on this gridlock biner because it so quickly closes and locks me out of the other end. But it's new, I trust I'll get into a rhythm with it...
This biner is perfect. Not only does it not cross-load but I feel secure in that it will not open on me. I mostly use it for belaying, but have also used it in challenge course settings to clip in climbers. I have seen auto-locking biners open because they rubbed against course equipment while the participant climbs. However, the megatron prevents that. Additionally, it's universal for both lefties and righties! Just pinch the gate and push to open.
I bought this for my girlfriend and I to use while sport climbing. I magnetron gives us both the peace of mind that the biner is locked when we are climbing and the gridlock ensures that a cross-load will never happen. Prior to my purchase I was using a petzl william autolocker for belaying, but when I would do a take I would frequently find that the biner was cross-loaded. If you want to ensure the safety of your climber and add a new gadget to the rack, spend the extra couple $ and buy the BD magnetron gridlock!
They are hands down the best biner, easy one hand operation, they don't freeze, they work great as a repel/belay biner as well. The gridlock part is excellent and they make a great key holder when not climbing. Yes the price is high but it is worth it. Overall buy one and see for yourself.
I bought this Carabiner as a keychain for my work keys and car keys. When it is closed, it keeps my keys down towards the bottom and the rings don't slide around. I know its not what it is intended to do, but working in Law Enforcement and owning a Jeep, Im sure to put it to use since it will be around. Great design, very light, very practical.
I'm no climber, but my keys are happy to have such a big carabiner wrapped around them. Very solid and used for my keys at work where I regularly chase gazelles through the open lands. I have yet to lose my keys, if that counts for anything.
