I bought this for my wife as her ski shell/summer rain jacket. First off, the fit is incredible. She's 5'7", 120 lbs and we got the XS. It's small enough in the summer when she's wearing less layers, but big enough in the winter that she can layer up with a down jacket, etc. She has the Roseberry color, which is awesome. As for the fabric, it's great. Super waterproof. Super durable. Love that the inside has a super thin layer of soft backer. This definitely helps cut some edge off the cold, as normal Gore-Tex ProShell fabric can get pretty chilly to the touch in the winter, but doesn't add much to weight and warm, summer wearability. Pocket placement is more climbing-focused, so be aware of that, as they aren't really "hand warmer" pckets. Overall this is a fantastic product made by a fantastic company. The difference in craftsmanship is readily apparent.
I got this for my gf as a present. And GAWD, i'm drooling all over it and wish I had enough fund in the bank to get myself one. She already owns a GAMMA MX hoody as a mid-layer, she has her 10 year old columbia jacket as an outer layer, What an UPGRADE! (that's what she said). It not only kept her dry and warm, she loves how flexible the jacket is, and the extra room in the jacket helps with layering and yet it is not baggy.
"The stingray jacket can take on Mother nature and come out on top"
This jacket is the absolutely best jacket I have for winter activities, especially backcountry skiing. The jacket is built a little large so one can throw on a warm underlayer. All of the zippers are waterproof and easy to slide. The pit zips are pretty long so if venting is necessary, you can shed heat really quickly. The hood is large enough to fit over a ski helmet and has lots of adjustment options. The neck is tall enough that you can hide your nose in it when it is really cold and windy. The DWR seems to be very durable, it still sheds moisture like it was new. As a tester in the Mountaintechs program, I have worn a lot of jackets and this one is at the head of the class.
Yes, this is an expensive jacket, no doubt. For those short on time - it looks great, performs even better, and is worth the pretty penny. 60 MPH winds on the top of the slopes in Tahoe? I couldn't feel 'em at all. Wipe out on slushy snow at 50 MPH, nothing wet here! Easy to spot on the slopes in color "Lantern", you betcha! I think the fit is true to size. This jacket is light enough to be a nice rain slicker in warm temps. The hood is roomy, but I didn't wear a helmet, so I tightened it down nice and snug to keep the brutal winds out. This is an inverstment piece that is well worth the $500.
I absolutely loved this coat, until I tried it on. The craftsmanship is great, it's a great weight, but it runs big. I ordered an XS, which I usually do with Arcteryx, but the sleeves were long, and the coat was generally baggy on me.
The Stingray jacket never failed to return every penny spent on it in function and versatility as an all-around weather terrain jacket. I like to layer on the warmer side & shed the layers as needed; but with the stingray jacket you can layer like it's 40 F, zip it up & your good to go in 10 F. This brand is built for athletic bodies, with seams that hug your slender frame but arm lengths that reach perfectly for an ideal fit. You can purchase a brand that claims the same functions but once you have owned this brand you will see that your return on the product always turns out to be above expectations. Plus, with Moosejaw's free shipping, you can't go wrong with the prices & service.
