"Good quality jacket seems to fit true to size"
Just returned another name brand GoreTex for workmanship issues (4 weeks old) to another retailer and just received this jacket today. Wanted to chime in with some dimensions to validate sizing. I'm 6'1" / 225 lbs. No gut to speak of, 35 inch waist, with 45 inch chest. This jacket fits very well, had thought of XL but it would have been too big. Able to wear long sleeve Carhardtt shirt and fleece vest underneath without any tightness issues. Hopefully this helps someone out.......I'll report back in a year or so with an update on durability.
This jacket rocks! First I tried it out as a shell on a rainy mountain bike ride in Utah and I was really impressed by the breathability. Next it survived a 6 hour torrential downpour in Belize without any leaks (besides a little rain running down my face). The hood adjustments are fantastic. The only slight downside is the placement of the pockets, they are only useful for storing stuff, not for your hands.
This was my first Arcteryx piece purchased in 2011 primarily for skiing in North East with layering rather than my old school North Face from the last century. I'm 5'10" 183 and the medium fits well with base layer and mid layer of Arcteryx Atom LT and/or Patagonia Down sweater. 2012 Theta AR was updated so they may have changed the cut. Arcteryx sizing is a little inconsistent as in most of their gear I am a large but this one piece I'm a medium.Love the jacket's longer length to keep wind of your butt and pockets are friendly to use however wanted a looser fit for skiing so in 2012 I added the shorter waist Alpha SV (large) and prefer it for skiing though the pockets not as friendly...not sure how climbers use them. Now use Theta for everything but skiing.
I've only owned the jacket for a couple months and so far haven't experienced any weather that has really put it to the test. I've worn it as a fall rain jacket around campus and while cycling and it's kept me warm and dry underneath. Goretex Pro makes the water bead up and roll off. Planning on using it over an Atom LT and a Cap 3 skiing this winter and can't imagine I'll be cold. I'm 6'2" and struggle finding coats that cover my entire torso, past my waist but the Theta does it. Articulation is spot on, can't wait to have adventures with this for the next ten years.
I love this Jacket. I've used it while hiking, commuting by bicycle, and just overall living in one of the rainiest places in North America. It's got great repellence and amazing fit. I'm 6'3' with a plus 3 ape index. I usually wear L or XL jackets depending up brand, and this large size fits like a glove. The articulated cut works amazingly well when I'm biking. The sleeves don't ride up at all and the waste stays down around my ass the way it should. Worth every penny.
Wore this shell bush whacking in the evening and early morning and it holds up great. Also makes a nice heat shield when you are sleeping in pine needles. Big pit-zips work with one hand operation unlike some competitors. Nice big, high chest pockets let you carry all your need to get to items right in front.
I love the Arcteryx brand as they tend to run long in the body and arms. This jacket does not disappoint! Used it on several backpacking trips recently and spent a fair bit of time in it as both a wind breaker and a rain jacket while wearing a pack. I found it very comfortable, plenty long enough and easy to vent with the large pit zips.
Stayed perfectly dry during a wet 9 days in Tasmania. The longer length cut meant perfectly dry inside. Great big pit zips keep you cool. Chest pockets are nice and high, away from hip belts and harnesses and very rooms. I could get 2 pairs of gloves and a beanie in there with room to spare. The hood works well and is easily adjustable. The cuffs offer ample adjustment. One puzzling thing - not double zipped on the front. Seems light a strange feature not to have but I can live without it.
"Fantastic lightweight jacket for active winter use"
I bought it for year-round use from snowboarding to hiking. I decided on the Theta for a few main reasons. 1. Gore-Tex Pro Shell is totally waterproof, extremely breathable, without being too heavy for backpacking 2. The length of the jacket. I wanted the extra length for use in Wasatch powder(no powder skirt) and for extra coverage in violent afternoon thunderstorms. 3. I wanted a jacket that would last for around a decade, not just a few seasons. I'm 5'10" 175lbs and a large fits me just fine, has extra room but it's supposed to so the jacket doesn't ride up on you.
This jacket finally showed up on my doorstep today, and I almost couldn't control my excitement as I tore off the packaging and rushed to try it on over my Atom LT Hoody. It fit perfect and with the lightweight atom hoody underneath I am ready for all the weather Fargo, ND can throw at me this year. I actually use this gear to do everything from hunting and camping, to playing pond hockey in the back yard. It's athletic lightweight and tough construction makes it the perfect gear for active outdoor types who live in cold or wet areas.
