The Squid Stick Clip by Trango does an elegant job of clipping out-of-reach bolts and allows you to UN-CLIP carabiners from those same bolts. The Squid can pay for itself in recovered draws in just a few days and you can load up your karma bank by retrieving draws from others. "Fingers" at the end of the pivot-arm grab the gate and open it with a pull, letting you take the carabiner out of the bolt. If the draw is hanging, a clever set of arms will place your rope into the draw.

"afraid of decking? take the pressure off." 02/19/13
I'll stand by the concept that composure and smarts are a climbers best forms of protection, but this thing really is a great buy. sport climbing is supposed to be fun and casual, and the squid helps to keep it that way. I know of very few climbers who will say they don't feel a little better pulling the bottom moves of a new route with that first high bolt already doing its job (this of course excludes the most die-hard of onsight-fanatics).
"Not as good as my 2 inch clamp" 09/03/12
I bought the squid as a replacement for my clamp which I lost while climbing outside the US. I had a hard time using the squid. The rubber build up that is supposed to secure the biner between it and the arm does not offer enough friction to hold the biner in place. When I miss the bolt hanger, the gate of the biner is released and it closes. So that I have to take the quickdraw back down, then, reset it on the squid and start over. I did not have that problem with my clamp. I am actually going back to the clamp and I 'm selling my squid.
"Best stick-clip every made by a man..." 08/16/12
I love my squid. I'm a bit of a "combat style" sport climber, getting on routes way over my head all the time (and if I work them hard enough I can do them!) Its nice not having to worry about bailing because I can always stick clip up, or use the squid to recover my draws once I am on the ground. This thing is baller! I broke one (I threw it off a cliff and it landed square on a boulder squid down). No question. I went to the store and replaced it. These things are just INCREDIBLE!!!
"Save the money...make your own" 08/14/12
The RED and NRG (especially the Lost Gauley) can have some tall 1st bolts. But when it comes to clip sticks, mother-nature (branches) or your local hardware store (cheap clamps) will provide a more economical and less frustrating solution. This device is great in theory but frustrating as hell. I've seen several break with ease so save the dough and do some googling on alternatives.
"Takes getting used to, but worth it when you do." 12/06/11
It takes a little practice to use the Squid, but it's incredibly useful. I find it a little harder to clip a rope into a draw that's already on the wall, so usually I just clip the rope into the draw before I clip it on the wall. I bought a 12 foot painters pole from a hardware store, and I can clip draws easily all throughout its range. Pretty sweet product overall.
"Clever safety gadget worth carrying" 07/27/11
Clipping into that first bolt often helps avoid precarious situations (cave overhangs and other exposed climbs where spotting is difficult if not impossible) and this device allows you to do so and also enables your belayer to focus on belaying and not spotting. Don't waste money on a spring clip duct taped to a pole, get the Squid and do it right the first time!
"Lost my old one, and for 30 bucks it is an essential piece of gear well worth replacing." 01/29/11
Simple, elegant, no extras no flash just the basics to get the job done. With The Squid fears of clipping the first bolt with more then a questionable runout vanish. With the ability to clip the first and sometimes second hangers it makes sport climbing a dream. Add in the extra feature of being able to unclip for those hairy times you just cant seem to send a route and its dynamite. Small, compact, and easily packable its an essential for the crag bag.
"Woweee!" 05/18/10
This thing is crazy! It has so many different features (clipping, unclipping, and regular ol' stick clipping). The little arms are so cool how they flip up and down and the rubber inside the clip is perfect for keeping the draw in place. They come in a variety of different colors too. I thought I was getting blue like the picture but I ended up with a green one instead! A really great buy instead of the old clamp.
