The North Face Recon is a tough pack ready for whatever it is you're gonna put it through, whether it's a weekend on the trials, or a busy week of school. FlexVent injection molded shoulder straps with additional PE foam provide an enormous amount of comfort, and the padded Airmesh back panel adds even more comfort. The large main compartment on this impressive 29-liter capacity North Face pack includes a laptop sleeve, organization, and hydration port. A secondary compartment features organization as well. A large and small pocket on the front means there's added space for the little items you don't want to misplace. Mesh side pockets are included as well. That's a lot of stuff. I told you it's ready.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Durable, comfortable, backpack with more pockets than you can shake a stick at While I use this mostly for school, it's also perfect for the quick day trip or weekend getaway if you skip the unnecessary items like fresh underwear. The pockets are huge and there are many storage compartments to keep things well organized. ,,,,The laptop protection pocket is nice, but a little small for a larger 17" laptop, anything smaller would fit perfectly. The side pockets are nice and tight, with an additional strap to really keep that water bottle in there.,,,,I'm not sure if the bottom waist strap detaches, but if not, it would be nice, in case you're doing stuff that doesn't require that level of secureness.,,,,Overall a great backpack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Backpack I've Ever Owned Since I was little I have loved buying new backpacks and bought one or more each school year until my freshman year of college when I found this gem. I haven't bought a new one since (4 years later) and I've used it for everything from a heavy course load at school, to traveling (by car, bus, or plane) and I've used it on my bike to just cart stuff around. It keeps things dry, protects my MacBook and my iPad and allows me enough space to hold all my chargers, as well as many other things I'm sure I don't need but I have the space (so why not fill it, right?). This backpack is amazing and I doubt I'll ever buy anything else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from School, traveling, hiking I bought one of these backpacks about four years ago and am still using it. I've used it to haul multiple textbooks to school, to pack clothes and my laptop when I'm traveling, or just to carry water bottles and a snack for hiking. Excellent quality. I've filled this backpack with more stuff than you would think possible but the zippers are still intact, no matter how full I've stuffed it. I've also carried heavy loads countless times in the Recon backpack and it's held up beautifully. I know it's expensive but it pays for itself many times over. Definitely worth the investment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from LOVE! This pack is my favorite! There's enough room and pockets that if you can't fit what you need in here, you probably don't need to take it. The pack is great for full day-hiking and even carries enough for off-trail stays; it's not a framed pack for extended travel but anything less, this is perfect. I won't repeat all the kudos from previous reports but suffice it to say I carry full emergency gear, extra clothing (layer/rain), water purification, shelter packs, minimal fishing equipment, and more. Put a water bottle in one of the two side pouches and head out!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tought, stylish, lightweight, versatile backpack that will last for a long time I got this backpack in September of 2009, and I am into my sixth year using it pretty much every day. I used it for school, day hikes, skiing and traveling. It breathes great, has plenty of organization space and is surprisingly comfortable. The waist strap isn't the most beefy strap in existence, but it keeps it secure when skiing and while hiking it allows me to put the weight on my waist comfortably up to about 15-20 lbs. ,,,,I recently got a separate dedicated ski backpack for the backcountry but the Recon has help up extremely well and will continue to do so. No zippers have broken, no fabric ripped, and no apparent damage anywhere. All-in-all, a really solid backpack that'll last for years. Just make sure you choose a color you'll like half a decade from now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A bit disappointed I've always loved the Recon. In fact, I own two, but I wanted a new color so I ordered a 2013 model. Much remains the same from the previous version but there are some tweaks that make this version somewhat of a disappointment. First, TNF has made the top grab handle so narrow that it is uncomfortable if not unusable. Second, the zippers seemed much stickier than on previous versions. Anyone who loves backpacks knows how important a seemingly silly quality such as smoothness of zipper can be. The zipper closure on the front stash pocket in particular seems to have been straightened out. I returned the one I ordered because I didn't like the flashlight green/sage green combo. The flashlight green is sufficiently bright as to warrant only a front panel with a black back like the asphalt/TNF red. It's still a great bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy this one The pockets and compartments make this able to carry a lot and very versatile. The straps are extremely comfortable, and the padded pocket is great for a laptop. Two water bottle pockets on the side and a slot for a hydration bladder hose make this great for light hiking. I just bought the third one being used one of my family members. They all love them, and it's their favorite of all packs they have owned to date.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great This is a great pack. i use it mostly for school and a little backpacking. it has a great capacity yet doesn't look huge when its not fully packed. the water bottle holders on the sides are very large which allows for a nalgene to be held which most backpacks don't accommodate. It has a nice laptop sleeve inside that holds my macbook pro 15" with ease. i highly recommend this pack and you will love it!
