This is a great softshell. I got it mainly for walking around town and when I go golfing in the early AM during the spring. It serves so many purposes at the same time; It blocks out the wind, can keep you dry in a light drizzle, and the interior lining gives you a bit of warmth. Best of all, the jacket is slightly stretchy so you don't feel like you are wearing a bag :)
I had an older softshell jacket for about 8 years now, and figured I wanted to get a new one for this winter. I tried out the Adze, Bionic, and Chromium. This Adze was my first choice, and though it does block the wind well, the sleeves are a bit too long and the lack of chest pocket, and smaller interior pockets were a disappointment that I didnt think I would really miss. It was nice to put license/cc into the chest pocket when going out. The XL was a good fit on my 6ft, 200lb frame, but the sleeves and lack of pockets were the deal breaker. I ended up returning and going with the Chromium.
This morning in Michigan it was -13 degrees with a wind chill of -35. Coldest weather I've ever been in. Perfect conditions to see what this jacket can handle. With only a lightweight 1/4 zip fleece underneath, this jacket kept me very comfortable while walking the long trek from the parking lot to my work, pumping gas, and any other times outside today for15-20 min. Very impressive for such a light jacket in -35 deg wind. The wind was intense and this jacket provided superb wind protection. You could feel the cold on the outside of the jacket but the wind did not penetrate one bit. Material is very flexible and the jacket isn't bulky or cumbersome. I'm 5 '7" 185 lbs and a large works well with room for some layering. Sleeve's are good with a little extra length to use the adjustable cuff to seal around your gloves. Pockets are positioned a bit high but it doesn't bother me. It allows you to use a pack with a waist strap while having access to your pockets. Pocket lining is cozy warm!
This is one of my favorite jackets and my go to jacket when the temps are around 50 degrees or above. It looks great and serves it's purpose very well. Anything below 50 and you would need another layer. I also have The North Face Apex Bionic jacket and the Adze beats the pants off it both in terms of warmth and wind resistance and also looks better at least in my opinion. The Adze completely blocks the wind. The arms are a bit long, but I like it that way. The only possible negative for some people is the fit as it is super athletic. I am 5' 6" and around 135 pounds and the small fits me great but I can see that for anyone even a little bigger, it might be snug. But then, I would size up and still buy this jacket.
I have had this jacket for a few months now and it has been great on brisk mornings. The velcro closures on the sleeves have worn the fabric on the cuffs a bit prematurely and the water resistant coating didn't last long. The wind proofing is excellent. The regular fit of the jacket is true to size and comfortable. Overall I would recommend this jacket,
I love this softshell...the size L fits true to size for me (5'11", 170 lbs), and I like the regular fit. It gives me a little room to layer underneath, as I don't need a "technical" fit for climbing or anything. It also seems to be the perfect weight for me...I live in SC, and the winters aren't usually that cold. This will probably be a good jacket for most of the "cold" season down here. And it helps that I got a great price on it...it was on sale, AND I took advantage of the recent 96 hr 15% off sale. I suggest signing up for the Moosejaw emails to take advantage of such things!
"Very lightweight, comfortable, warm and windproof jacket."
I recently purchased the Adze jacket as a replacement for my Mountain Hardwear Android jacket. I was very pleasantly surprised by the weight of it. When I am wearing it I almost forget I am wearing a jacket. It is extremely comfortable indoors and outside. I haven't had a chance to test it in very cold conditions yet but I feel like it will perform well in comparison to my previous purchase. All in all this is a very good jacket for the price. Great for fall or winter weather.
Up front, the jacket is awesome. I'm 6'3" 195-200lbs and the large fits perfectly. Even the sleeves are good to go (my shirts are usually 36" long at the sleeve). Everything you'd expect out of it fits with the dozens of reviews, i.e. here and on Outdoor Gear Lab, etc. The one thing I overlooked was the color. I ordered the Paintbrush Red because I thought it would stand out nicely on the snow or in the woods. Wow. It is perfect for hunting season, if you're into that sort of thing, because it is seriously orange. Not even a little bit of red to be found. Anyway, I'm returning the orange jacket for the Wax Red color. Can't wait for the weather to cool off and to use the jacket.
I got this one in "Paintbrush Red" and it is ORANGE!! I mean, this sucker is bright and obvious. Whatever the activity is, if your party can't locate you in this, the next trip needs to be to the eye doctor. Performance wise, I love it. Watch the video to learn about the features - I have nothing new to say there. Wind, rain and temperature resistance is what you would expect from a softshell. I do like the pockets a lot (look at the picture - the pockets go from the seam below the pocket zipper to the seam above the Patagonia logo). Would definitely buy again. Also, Moosejaw price matching rocks.
I got this jacket back in December and it's become my everyday jacket, even in a Michigan winter. With a warm pullover on underneath it, this jacket has kept me warm down to 25-30 degrees. It fits me rather well as I'm 6'3" 185lbs--a little loose in the midsection, but then it fits a heavier insulating layer. The sleeves are rather long which is great. I highly recommend this jacket.
