Outdoor Research DryComp Summit Sack

The DryComp Summit Sack by Outdoor Research. Load a sleeping bag and down jacket in this compression sack on the approach. When it's time to leave camp the compression straps convert to shoulder straps and a waist belt, and it becomes your summit sack. Daisy chains and ice axe loops take care of your equipment.

"A useful summit pack." 04/20/11

Niether and amazing compression sack nor amazing summit pack but does a very respectable job of both. I recently used it on a winter ascent of Mt. Whitney's mountaineer's route. It kept my extra clothing and items dry and compressed in my pack and did the same for my gloves, food, and summit gear. I folded a cheap blue foam pad ~18"x18" (also useful as a butt pad when sitting on snow) to pad and give some rigidity to the back, something this pack lacks. In addition I bought the sternum strap from OR to make the pack more stable; this is something that should come with the back an item sold separately. Also the ice axe loops are somewhat useless w/o some kind of cinch.

"Simple yet effective waterproof pack" 11/30/10

I bought this pack for its intended purpose as a summit pack, but it can also be used for any wet environments as this pack really is waterproof. It's very simple in design which makes it light weight and compressible. I love the water bottle pockets! Only recommendation is a sternum strap, so I bought an OR one and just added it. Endless possibilities with this pack!

"Where have you been all my life?" 06/17/08

What a sweet design. Light weight, versatile, waterproof - this thing is great. It could use a hydration sleeve, but what are you gonna do...its a stuff sack after all. I was a little caught off guard that the shoulder straps aren't adjustable. Again - because they're compression straps - but they are set at a decent size. All in all its a brilliant idea.

"Great idea. Great product. Super impressed." 02/18/08

This pack is genious. I live in the rainforest of Alaska, and it rains ALL the time. When I go on backpacking trips, I know that I can use this to compress my cold clothing down jackets, sleeping bag, etc and then use it during the day as a pack. The water bottle holders are a HUGE plus as well. Not THE most comfortable, but above what I thought from a compression sack pack. Try saying that three times.

"Nice Pack for any light occasion." 12/18/07

I got this pack because I wanted a light big summit pack. and i found it. THis waterproof dry sack, compression sack has it all. THe only thing it lacks is the chest strap but i rigged one up with a 24 inch accesory strap Threaded through the shoulder straps

light weight, versatile, and waterproof, there really isnt anything in the same class as the summit sack, for mountaineering and hiking this is definitely worth buying

"Great product, you won't be disappointed" 03/20/07

I have one and have used it several times, it is great to put a down bag and down jacket in and compress down to save space in your backpack and then it can be converted to a summit sack to complete your journey or use it as a fast pack. Have to get a second one because my son-in-law keeps trying to take mine....

"Light, Well sealed and water tight. Good stuff sack. Lousy pack." 09/26/06

I bought this to use for summit climbs. Used it to climb Mt Holy Cross. It worked well as a stuff sack/pack liner in my big pack. It was hard to compress because it is air tight. It was not so great as a pack. I think it need to be hydration system compatable. No place for a bladder. Needs a chest strap. The shoulder straps are thin and kept sliding outward. I think I'll take my Camelback Mule next time.
