The Bug Bivy by Outdoor Research. The Bug Bivy provides complete insect protection through the night. A single pole holds the mesh away from your face, keeping the bugs at a distance. "Complete Coverage" 12/14/11

The nice thing about this product is that it is entierly lightweight. You can easily tote it around with you hiking, traveling to exotic places, etc and be assured that nothing with legs or wings will be crawling on you in the middle of the night. It's nice that it has a solid bottom too to keep you off the ground and assure you complete coverage. The downside to this product is that while there is 1 pole that keeps the net off of your head (easy to set up on top of that), the bottom half of your body has the net laying on top. I only wish this had a lightweight rain fly that could go over it and you would have a complete 1 person tent and bug shelter.

"INSTRUCTIONS HERE. Also could be lighter" 08/24/11

Undo the velcro. At the hinge of the velcro, there is a hole to thread the pole through. You will be putting the pole from the bottom, up. BOOM. The pocket on the other side is only there to confuse you.My only complaint is that do we really need a goretex bottom? If it's raining, guess what, it'll go through the net. If you tarp and only need a waterproof bottom, you can use other stuff like Siliconized nylon or PU or plastic bag or whatever. "Those don't breathe" you say. Well, the MESH breathes pretty well. So, if they dropped it to 10oz or under and maybe $50 bucks, it'll be 5 stars and I'll review it twice to give it 10.

"If you figure out how it works...." 06/30/10

...it's great. I can see how the lack of instructions could cause a user to go horribly wrong and think this is a bad design, but if you figure out how it works you'll be just fine. The key is that the pole slides into a pocket underneath the Velcro strap on the right hand side. The fit is tight, but it works great. Definitely bug-proof. Appears to be well-constructed too (though I haven't put it to the overnight test yet).

"not recommending it..." 07/17/08

I'd like to start out by saying i rarely give negative reviews, but I'm with another reviewer on this one. I just received this and tried setting it up. It is not as expected. First of all, i feel the pic on the website is misleading. The pic makes it appear that the netting is hovering above you or your sleeping bag from top to bottom. I don't know how this would be possible with the equipment that is provided? Secondly, with the one pole system, there's no way you would be able to get in and out of this thing without the pole coming out. I have a feeling you would be dealing with this issue alot and it would be frustrating. This is a very bad design in my opinion. Rather than ha

"The bivy needs to be re-designed and instructions need to be provided." 04/23/08

Maybe this is a useful bivy for some people but I have had a hard time with it so far. I will no doubt keep practicing using it. Since there were no instructions that came with it I had to figure the thing out and for the life of me I could not figure out the pole attachments. Every time I would put the pole in where it said POLE the pole would just pop out again and I could not figure out what the velcro was for. If it was to velcro the pole in place then I can tell you that doesn't work. So I finally ended up putting the pole on the inside of the bivy and that worked pretty well. Then there was the issue of the straps on the inside. The straps are no doubt needed, but what do they

"Beats a hammock and keeps out the 'skeeters!" 11/07/07

Bought these for camping in our Florida summers when it is really too hot for a tent and our state bird mosquito won't leave off! My husband loves the fact that it doesn't weigh anything, but gives protection from the scorpions and beats a hammock any day.

"If you're a bug, its Fort Knox." 06/19/07

It does the job, and I like that. It can be difficult to shimmy in and out of because it only zips at the top, but again, it does the job. Its lightweight and small, so I can't complain, and the bugs hate it.

"Great buy. Quality product." 04/08/07

This bivy is great. I switched from being a tent-camper to a tarp-man last fall. The only problem there has been mosquitoes and biting flies. The OR Bug Bivy takes care of that. With my tarp and the bivy, my shelter weight is still under 2 lbs. On clear nights it is great to sleep under the stars without creepy-crawlies all up in your face. Its design keeps the screen off and away from your head, and I find there is plenty of room to shift from my back to my stomach and side to side. Construction is sturdy, and at $70 it is a spectacular addition to anyone trying to keep pack weight down

"Good bug screen for one person over a sleeping bag." 06/22/05

This is a really good bug screen, works great over your sleeping bag on a cot or on the ground. I used it on my last trip to Africa, slept in it for a month of nights. The entrance opening is around the head, so you have to crawl in feet first, but after you get in and get it closed up it's great. Also very light, great for backpacking!
