The Osprey Kestrel 38 Pack is a hiking day pack for long trail adventures where you'll return by evening. The Kestrel 38 has been built for the longer day hikes, and can even be used as an overnight pack for ultralight packers. It has been loaded with features to make it simple and easy to attach additional gear. The lower half of the pack has two of my favorite pack features, the integrated raincover and the sleeping bag compartment. The attached raincover ensures I won't forget it at home and keeps it separate and out of the way until I need it. The sleeping bag compartment is all about quick access to an essential. It is crazy how genius the Stow-On-The-Go™ attachment seems once you start to use it. I am constantly using them so I can use my hands to climb over obstacles on the trail. On lighter days I just compress the bag down so the load doesn't shift along the way while the Airscape™ backpanel, harness and hipbelt do their thing, fully loaded or otherwise.

FEATURES of the Osprey Kestrel 38 Pack

  • Reverse StraightJacket compression straps
  • Stow-On-The-Go Trekking Pole Attachment
  • Stretch woven front pocket

Osprey Airscape

Osprey Airscape
Osprey's AirScape™ mesh covered ridge foam backpanels set a new standard in the industry. With its ability to keep the weight close, provide cushion, allow ventilation and add load carry is quite a list of needs from this unassuming backpanel. It successfully accomplished all of that in a way that allows it to be used in the large gear hauling packs and lightweight day hiking packs.

Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great backpack, just the right size for a day-long/overnight hike Was looking for a day-long to overnight hiking backpack and came across Osprey. I'm 6' 180 lbs and found the M/L size to fit just right. This thing has it all, great back support, arches away from you to cut down on that sweaty back feeling, stiff to keep my camelpak water bladder in place and unharmed. Ton's of pockets though I wish it had two pockets on the sides like the Atmos series from Osprey. FYI, if you get a tear in this thing 20 years from now, Osprey will fix it at no cost (presumably you'd have to pay for shipping but don't know, haven't had to use it). This thing is built to take abuse and has way more room than you would think from looking at it. Love this backpack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for overnights and long hikes Thanks to osprey for making flawless products. I use this pack for long hikes and overnights, and it performs flawlessly. It is very comfy for loads up to 30 lb, for me that is enough gear for an overnight (ultra light tent included). Only complaint are the side mesh pockets. I mainly use them for 1l water bottles, but I have to take off my pack to reach them. I'd wish they were angled like the ones on other packs. To solve these I use 3l bladder in the specific reservoir compartment, and fill it with my water bottles when is empty. The materials and the overall manufacturing are very high quality. And I think the price is just right for what you get. I almost forget the great rain cover that was included ! Thanks for making these products so good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Everything You need, nothing you don't. My outing club owns a few of these packs and they adjust just enough so everyone can fit in them fairly well. They are a good size for someone who doesn't have a full pack (as in not the leader of the trip so they don't need a med kit and stove) but it is a struggle to get a bear canister in without having to re-pack every time. They are great though, filled with features that make them very multi purpose, these can be used as day packs too for things like ice climbing where you need to trek in a lot of gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this bag! This bag has been with me for four years already and the durability is amazing. Storing water is a breeze, and you don't need to buy a rain cover! . It is a nice feature having the rain fly attached to the bag as well. This bag can be used to cover a long day hike, all the way up to a 4-5 day trek if you plan the rest of your gear out well. The straps are easy to move to fit any body type, as well as the back adjustment. This is the bag I trust when I go on short treks, and I recommend it to everyone!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great short term backpack with good construction I haven't use the backpack much, but it will be used extensively for an upcoming trip. I bought this pack to fit just at international travel carry-on requirements. It has fantastic storage for an overnight or a super-light two to three day trek. The top does not disconnect like some Osprey bags. The bag has typical Osprey quality - I owe four bags - they stand behind the product. I'll provide a better update after my trip.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice pack but not ideal for extended climbing sessions I like this pack pretty well but it isn't big enough for my needs. I climb carrying a 70 meter rope, webbing and other gear for setting up a climb but this bag is mostly full once the rope is inside. For this purpose, I would recommend starting with something slightly larger. This pack is very comfortable to wear and fits very well. It is quite adjustable which is nice. I really really like that it has a side zip the length of the pack. I wish there was something like the front panel Daisy chains in the top of the inside of the pack. I found I wanted to hang carabiners or other gear at the top so they would stay up there but wasn't able to. The back stretch panel seems small and seems less flexible than something like the variant has I think (though I haven't seen it in person). I like this pack and would recommend it though something like the variant might suit my needs better. Would highly like something to hang things in the bag as mentioned previously.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get it! Use it! Love it! I already have the Osprey Aether 70. The Osprey Kestrel 38 Pack makes for a great compliment for those smaller long day and overnight adventures. I purchased this pack for my 4 day Inca Jungle Trail hike in Peru that led us through rivers, trails, and mountains. Along with planes, trains and automobiles (buses really). Since we were sleeping in a hostel every night, I was able to leave my sleeping bag at home and manage to squeeze extra clothes and sandals in its place. It made through the whole trek! I loved the fully adjustable straps, integrated rain fly (although not needed) and the built-in 3L reservoir. All of the weight was evenly dispersed through the adjustable hip belt. It was very comfortable and performed above and beyond my expectations. It took me 2000+ feet above Machu Picchu to the top of Machu Picchu Mountain. It was the first trip for this smaller pack, but I see it getting more use than my larger Osprey Aether 70. Already planing my next adventure!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok. The fit was dissapointing First, to be fair: these backpacks are gender specific and I got a man's backpack, despite being a girl. I liked the color better :) The fit was disappointing as compared to the Osprey Stratos (female version) - no matter what I did, the kestrel just did not sit quite right on my back, and felt "heavier" than the S of the same size. On the plus side, the Kestrel's pockets are awesome and I love being able to attach things like carabiners easily.

OSPREY MEASUREMENT GUIDE

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size each pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should probably have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate. And they might accidentally touch your butt.

HOW TO MEASURE TORSO LENGTH:
• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size charts above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

HOW TO MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE:
• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelts size chart above to help determine your ideal Osprey pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

ALL MIGHTY GUARANTEE - Osprey's Lifetime Warranty

When Osprey celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2009 they launched The Osprey All Mighty Guarantee. What that means to you is ANY Osprey product purchased at ANY time is covered. Any product, any reason, any era - the all encompassing Osprey lifetime warranty ensures their dedication to superior design, craftsmanship and quality of their products is backed up by their actions to replace or repair a pack so it lasts a lifetime. Or two.

Here are some details.... Osprey will repair for any reason, free of charge, any damage or defect in their products, whether it was purchased back in 1974, or ordered right now from this site. If they are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, they will happily replace it. Osprey proudly stands behind the All Mighty Guarantee, so much so that it bears the signature of company founder and head designer, Mike Pfotenhauer.

Some Osprey All Mighty Guarantee FAQs:

What do I do if my Osprey pack needs to be repaired?
If you live in the United States and need a repair done on your Osprey pack, you will first need to obtain a Return Authorization number. You can do this by reaching their Returns Department at 866-314-3130, or using the information that is provided with a new Osprey pack.

What do I do if I just need a replacement pack part like a buckle?
Give Osprey a call at 866-314-3130 and they will take care of you.

How long will it take?
You can tell Osprey you need the pack returned by a certain date when you request a Return Authorization number, and they will do their absolute best to meet that deadline.

What if my pack is super dirty and stinks?
Clean it before you send it to Osprey to get repaired. The real reason is that there is a law that says if your gear is too dirty or odiferous (smelly), Osprey is not allowed to repair it and will just return it to you.

Do I have to pay for shipping?
A little bit. You are responsible for the cost of shipping the pack to Osprey, and they will pay shipping to return the pack via UPS or FedEx. Osprey cannot be held responsible if packages get lost in transit, so make sure you get a tracking number when you ship your pack out. Also, if you use expedited shipping be sure to let Osprey know (866-314-3130). They, in turn, will give your pack priority processing and return it using a similar expedited shipping method.

Do I have to register my pack to take advantage of this incredible guarantee, and/or need to be the original owner of my Osprey pack?
No! Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee is truly ALL MIGHTY. If you own an Osprey pack that needs to be repaired they will repair or replace it.

JUST A HEADS UP: If your Osprey product is not repairable and is replaced, the original product will not be returned to you. They will try really really hard to repair your pack, but if they are unable to make a functional repair, they will replace it. For products that are no longer in production you will be contacted by Osprey to discuss replacement options.

All good answers. So what is NOT covered?
• Osprey program packs or any Osprey pack used by outdoor programs are ONLY covered under Osprey's Program Pack Warranty, NOT AMG.
• Size and/or fit issues. Make sure you buy a pack that fits. Check out the size guide on Osprey product pages for more info.
• Personal preferences like colors you don't like, style of the pack, or not enough/too much room in your pack. Check the product description, features, specifications, and size guide to make sure you are ordering the right pack for you.
• Third party Repairs or replacements. Send your Osprey pack to Osprey and Osprey only to get fixed. Easy as that. And don't try fixing things yourself.
• Cosmetic wear and tear including any reasonable aging of your pack that affects only the appearance and not the function of your pack. Be proud of those scars!
• B.A.M.G. (Before All Mighty Guarantee) Repair Work. The All Mighty Guarantee applies only to repairs requested on or after January 1, 2009.
• A Osprey Hydraulics reservoir is covered by a limited 1-year warranty, which is the reasonable lifespan of a reservoir. Pouring and storing of warm/hot or boiling water in your reservoir WILL VOID your warranty, so don't do that. Reservoirs are NOT designed to contain or handle liquids at temperature.
